I am looking for ideas to cleanly and neatly be able to unplug and remove my Garmin Nuvi 550 when not in use on long trips and not have a section of wiring to hide. I have a handlebar Ram Mount & quick disconnect kit to physically snap the GPS on and off the handlebar that I am happy with. It is very secure and works well. What I have in mind is to hard wire the bike (2013 SERK) back to the Accy. plug under the seat with some sort of quick connect (possibly USB) for the wiring mounted to the side of the handlebar riser clamp cover with maybe Industrial Velcro? This would leave me needing a short pigtail, say 1 foot in length to plug between the GPS and the connector at the riser cover. Has anybody ever done or seen anything like this? Ideas and pictures appreciated. I know Garmin sells a wiring harness to hard wire the unit but it leaves me with a section of wire to roll up and tuck away somewhere when not in use. Hope I haven't confused everyone reading this.
Thanks in advance,
Dwayne

How about doing like the factory and running wires through the handlebars? For me, more trouble/expense than it's worth, but you want the wires hidden...
-
Sounds good except for, What do ya do with the wire when you take the GPS off the handlebars for local rides?

Maybe I'm not picturing the same thing you are, but... I'm seeing the docking station stay on the bike when the GPS is removed. The wires are attached to the dock, and only a very small amount (or none at all) shows between the dock and where it enters the h-bars.
Are you saying you want to remove the mount and the dock when you don't need the GPS?

I sure appreciate your ideas and help. I think I may have confused you with what I am working with. There is no docking station, simply a quick detatchable mount. I will try to post pics of it.

This stays with the bike when GPS is removed

What about using the heated gear type mounts?

I used a DIN connector mounted in one of the blanks by the ignition switch. I soldered the other end on to the wire coming out of the GPS mount. I would plug the GPS cradle wire right into it and put the GPS on the handlebars in a quick disconnect mount.

The bust was mine, thinking there was a docking station. Both Porthole's and MJB's ideas are good; I use the Gerbings ports for heated gear power on my bike, and never had any problem.

I used the following to hard wire my Garmin to my RG. Note: wiring and mount stays on the bike and is all hidden.

That is the mount I used when I cut the wire and inserted the connector.

I extended the wiring on my Harley battery tender lead and then routed it under the tank and up under the steering head. I then purchased one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Battery-Tender-USB-Charger-for-Disconnect-Harness-12-Volt-Harley-Davidson-GPS-/191114232204?pt=Apparel_Merchandise&hash=item2c7f4bc18c
I simply run a USB charger cable to my GPS and when I remove it unplug the Battery Tender USB charger and I have no wiring that you can see.

Since my GPS comes on and off the bike frequently - what I have is the Garmin specific power cord, hard wired to one of the accessory switches on the lower fairing.
The cord comes out of the fairing at the handlebars. When there is no GPS on the bike I loop the connector back into the fairing and just leave a small 1" or so loop sticking out below the bars.

That's a great idea except it won't work on the Garmin Zumo 660/665 since the USB cable requires the rear cover be taken off to connect it and the GPS will not work with that cover off.
Try one of these http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/390967853777?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
using the car mount bracket that fits onto the unit itself (you will have to buy the g ball adaptor) and the std car charging cable that comes with the Garmin.
