Title: Wind and buffeting...
Post by: chrisk153 on July 29, 2010, 02:22:46 AM
Ok - those of you that have experience with both the RG and the UC:  Which has more buffeting for the rider and passenger?

I know this has been debated before, but didn't see a clear opinion either way.  In a previous life I was a GW rider, so I have some interest in the fixed fairing, and now that they've made a CVO RG Ultra, I'm really interested.  But the wife likes the SEUC better than the GW because she gets less wind, so I don't want to make a mistake and switch to something she doesn't like - cause if mama ain't happy...you know the drill.  And it's especially true when it comes to $36k motorcycles.

(And yes, that Ivory and Gold IS fugly...IMHO)

Any thoughts are welcome...

Two different "buffets" to compare.  Buffeting of the fairing and front of the bike itself in the wind stream or buffeting of the rider and passenger by the wind stream passing over the fairing and wind screen?

If I'm mistaken just say so but it seems you're interested in the latter; rider and passenger comfort.  If so the answer really is it doesn't matter.  Put an appropriate height/shape wind screen on either bike and rider and passenger will each ride in pretty clear air.

My wife and I both agree,.. we will never own an batwing fairing bike again.  The Road Glide, with lowers and a good shield,.. life doesn't get any better.

Agree with the prior posts.  Because the windscreen is further forward on the roadglide than the batwing bikes the protected zone for rider and passenger is also moved forward.  The protection usually collapses between rider and passenger.  A larger windscreen, one that you look through verses over, is the solution for both rider and passenger.  Alternatively, a helmet with shield eliminates the problem and allows the use of a lower shield from which you can look over.   I have had 3 different shields on my 2009 SERG and have settled on the standard height for a non-cvo roadglide that allows me to look over while I ride.

I have 4 different windshields for my RG. I have wind buffeting with all 4. I have found that if I don't want the buffeting I should drive my truck with the windows up. Not trying to be funny but I always thought that the thrill of riding was the wind in my face and hair ( when I had hair ). I do like not getting bugs in my teeth though.

Hazmat posted a new HD FLTR Wind Deflector Kit (http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448775791&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302287489&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302287489&bmUID=1280267530132&bmLocale=en_US) in the SERG board.

Can't say I like the look on the bike, though:

I went from this:

to this:

Same bike.  Different fairing.  Huge improvement!  No comparison for reducing buffeting on rider and BSR.  I can't imagine anyone going from an Ultra to a RG. :-\

We have two members here in Nor Cal that own both the CVO Road Glide and CVO Electra Glides.  Both comment just about the same......the road glides fun in the twisties, etc. but for the long haul they always take the bat winged fairing bikes.

Chainsaw - do you look over or through your windshield?

Thanks for all the replies everyone.  As usual, and as I expected, it's a very subjective and complicated answer.  I think I'll stick with the SEUC until they have a color scheme that really does something for me. Got too much $$$ in it anyway, and the SO isn't very keen on trading quite so soon...   >:(
