I saw this last week at Chi-Town H-D and bought one on the spot. This is one of those products that are so well thought out and so simple and elegant that you just have to say 'why didn't I think of that?'
For years I have carried extra fuel in the 16oz red MSR bottles in case I or a fellow rider should need this. But Ron Reda's gas can holds twice as much as these two bottles I carry in a heck of a lot less (and more convenient) storage space.
Ron is going to sign on and post to the Vendor Discounts section offering site members the usual 10% discount. Check it out and if you have any interest in carrying spare fuel this is a great idea. :2vrolijk_21:

They were at the Rapid City dealer during Sturgis week, its great to have one if the gas stations are far and few between. Been riding for twenty + years and never had the need for one. (so far) :nixweiss:

Me neither. But I've come too close for comfort. My bsr gets really anxious when that little light comes on and we are in BFE with no gas stations in sight. Of course the gps helps now but this is just a little extra insurance.

Well lemme tell just how well that GPS works.
I have the Zumo 550 and last year Greg Khougaz and I rode up for the San Juan Bautista meet. We were in BFE and my low gas indicator light turns on. So I program the GPS for gas stations, and it tells me of one 13 miles away, down a country road, which became a dirt road, which became a gravel road, which became an unpaved road, which dead ended at a ranch in the middle of nowhere. So we turn back and I am fully expecting to have to push the friggin' bike for the next two hours when we came across a road crew. I asked if they knew where to find gas and they laughed. Then they radioed to their storage yard and 15 mins later a guy in a maintence truck came out and brought me 3 gallons of gas. He said that the only station in town closed years ago and most folks don't know it. Now where that Zumo was leading me to I don't know. I do know that having that extra 1 gallon can of gas would have made my ride a lot nicer.

Not as far as I can tell. It has a good sealing system. And the MSR bottles of gas I have carried for years have never caused any problem.
This is just my opinion and experience. I have not relationship nor interest in this product other than seeing it, liking it and thinking many of you might also.

Yeah Mark. I can certainly relate. Supposedly (and I say that with tongue in cheek) the cartographers who supply the map data to Garmin (and others I imagine) have feet on the ground and actually reconnoiter these roads. HTF they manage to get these things so screwed up is amazing - maybe they worked previously for the moco, lol. Anyway I have had somewhat similar experiences but all in all the gps is an amazing tool in spite of its idiosyncrasies and limitations.

Cheap insurance, my speedometer and gas gauge crapped out on me last year and I was pushing my bike in 95 degree weather. Bike after bike drove right past me, finally a twice disabled vet in a pick up pulled over and took me to a gas station and back to the bike. He rode a Honda Goldwing and never gave me any BS. I tried to pay him but he gave me that evil eye and said just pass the favor along. I'll never forget him, he was wearing special clothing to not irritate the wound area from the shrapnel all over his arms, torso and legs. Hell of a an American!
I'll have one for sure, pushing is not my kind of cardio workout.

I've only got 5 gal but in any case sometimes you do something stupid like not getting gas when you stop for lunch or take a break because you intend to stop again later only to find that when you do stop again - no fuel. Times I've come close is not because I rode the entire tank out it was because I did not get gas when I had the chance.

I hear you and I thought of that. But you've got 5 or 6 gallons in the tank that could spill. Those saddlebags (the fiberglass/plastic ones for sure) are pretty tough and offer protection. Can't say a direct impact could not rupture the fuel container but I don't see it as a big issue for me personally. As with all things in life everyone has to make their own decision after weighing the pros and cons.

Carried (and used) the MSR bottles for years... this is a nice (and bigger capacity) alternative... ordered one of these, and now I can leave the MSR bottles on my BMW GS. Just saw these on a different board, and came here to share... but luckily did a search first, and found your thread.
The low fuel light on the SERG SUCKS!! Unless it is dark, it is sp dim it is completely useless... I've cut it close a few times!

If you go down hard enough to rupture this can inside your saddle bag, you've got bigger problems.... and you're probably nowhere near your bike... lol

Had a total of 11.5 gallons on my wing (aux fuel cell) and often rode non-stop between fillups. Of course if you can't make it that long, there's always the staduim pal! http://www.stadiumpal.com/ (yes, I do know some of the elite, most hard-core LD riders that use them)

That looks like something NASA would design. As a matter of fact, I can see how it could be adapted so an astronaut could go long distances, like Texas to Florida non stop.

probably closer to 5 minutes by the time you drop speed, park, take off a glove or two, find the little fella under your riding gear, get things squared away, put gloves back on, and get back up to speed. To the people that use them, 5 minutes (per time, spread of the course of several days) could be the difference in missing a time gate, setting a world record, winning a rally, or completing a ride.

It isn't limited to carrying GAS!!! You can put anything you want in it.. Piss, Booze..etc.
Just don't get confused and forget what you put in it last. :P :P :P :oops:

I used to carry extra gas years ago when all I had was my Suzuki 1400 for transportation and rode everyday (4 gallon tank). Today, since I can go about 200 miles on a tank of gas, there's no need for it. As for others that may need it, fill up in the morning and get more after 200 miles. Sorry, but riding around with a gas can in my saddlebag just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm pretty sure if I got one of these it would be the intent of "only for road trips." For long trips. Would have no intent of using it regularly or locally. So it would set on a shelf or in a cabinet somewhere 97% of the time. Then would come the long trip and I'd blow it off. Then some day somewhere I'd actually run out gas and be doubly pissed off for both running out and not having the gas can that was at home filled with dirt with a flower sticking out of it setting on the shelf over the toilet in the shop (because it would look appropriate there). So being that I'd rather be singly pissed off rather than doubly so I must pass in pursuit of some future day's mental health.

Agreed, I recently got hit by a van and it basically turned my saddlebag into hundreds of pieces, having gas in there may have made a bad situation worse......

The Garmin GPS on gas stations gives as the crow flys distance, not the roadway distance!!
I came very close to walking in Wyoming. And Yes it does not know of closed stations!!
Do ya think I can run out of gas with a 6 gal tank..*LOL

You all make good points both pro and con. And while I have never run out of fuel - close however - it does give comfort to know that you got that little extra just in case. Most of my close calls have been out west where stations can be few and far between in the less populated areas and it may be easy to pass one up because you really don't NEED fuel at that point only to find out later that you should have gotten it.

I have had one on order for a month. Did not get the 10% discount. That is not a big deal. I emailed and the responce I received was. "Sorry my machine broke down, hopefully I will have one to send out next week" that was on 11-15.

I want to make sure no one misunderstands this. I suggested to the vendor that he join our site, post in the vendor area and explained that he would have to offer a 10% discount. To my knowledge he has not acted on this suggestion even though he indicated that he would.
This thread about the product is just me, a customer, being excited about what I think is a really great idea and a useful product. :2vrolijk_21:

i want one, now i have the new softail convertible, compared to my 1340 evo, i am getting 100km less per tankfull,
i have run out on the old evo, but that was my own fault as i rode on reserve too long,

Just looking at the pics at the EGlide Goodies advertisement. This one specifically begs a question. Anyone got these yet and can confirm the can will still fit in a saddlebag if the lid has a lid organizer with much in it? Looks like it might be close quarters at the top.

I've rode all over this country and back and while I've had a couple of close calls, I've never ran out of gas. Now that we have the bigger gas tank.....no problem.

They say odor free, but I've never met such a gas can. I guaranty whatever you put in the same bag is going to stink. Perhaps only with tools, etc?

I bought mine in Sturgis last Summer and had to use it going to at AZ Bike Week. I was a little worried about leekage so I put it in a large zip lock, but no leaks and no fumes. I always take it on long trips now. It fits perfect in the back of the bag and takes up very little room. I'll have it in Tahoe if anyone wants to try and make it leak or give it the smell test. Doc

Thanks for the positive review! I've heard only positive things about them from people that have them.....and negative from those that don't. I'm getting one in a few days on the way to work....It's a long lonely hi-way at the top end of the trip to work in Mackenzie and have found that some of the fuel stops are closed @ 6pm....or not open before 9am.

Cheap peace of mind for $29.99. I've got one coming. May never need it, but then again, I did run the '04 out on the way home from work one day. For some reason, the low fuel light had first come on only about 2 miles earlier and the gauge still showed above "E." Never have had that scenario happen again, thank goodness, but if it does, I'll be good to go. I also ride with guys who are on different makes and models of bikes with differing ranges. Figure they might have need for an extra splash at some point, too.

I rely more on the odometer for gas stops, but sometimes the wind and hills will make a big difference especially when pulling the Bushtec. Its nice to have that little security. I do change the gas out every month or so to keep it fresh. Just don't loose the directions, it's a little complicated to use at first. Doc

I bought one at Edmonton HD in the spring for $39 + GST. Fits in the bag with lots of room to spare. I carry my rain suit, heated vest and tire kit in the same bag with no fume issues and I could still squeeze in more if need be.
