Little Sticky Reflectors
« on: October 12, 2010, 10:27:49 AM »

Just wanted to see how many CVO riders have removed the front fork/bag bar reflectors. Why did you leave them / take them off?

I removed the bag reflectors because they looked ugly and I don't think they make much difference in being seen.  I don't recall if I took the fork ones off, but probably.  Why do you ask?

All gone, just looks better without them.  If my bikes isn't bright enough to be seen, reflectors won't help.

I left them on...it's a little thing called conspicuity (being seen).  Every little bit helps.

Took 'em off my 06 but left them on my 07 and now my 11.  07 has only on fork but 11 on fork and rear engine guard (how's that for a euphemism?).  Don't know that they'd help but couldn't hurt being seen especially at night and from the side.  Well heck I guess that's what they are there for isn't it?   :nixweiss:

Once the bike is in motion, as opposed to just sitting parked for folks to look at, I don't see any advantage to removing them.  And I've never had anyone walk up when I'm stopped somewhere and tell me "Nice bike, too bad about those ugly reflectors ruining the looks".  I personally think too many people have way too much of that "LOOK AT ME" fixation.  Kind of like another thread around here about the newest style, tiny little tires on huge front rims so folks can make their bikes just as ugly (and unsafe) as their cars.

BTW, the side reflectors serve a very important purpose.  Just as with boats, where different color running lights signify certain things, the reflectors tell you which end is the front and which end is the back.  This can come in very handy when leaving the bar at 2 am, because no one likes to get on their bike backward in front of the guys.

By the way in Alberta they are required by law for Safety Reason and are referred to as "Reflex Reflectors". I found this out when I had my out of Province Inspection done and the inspector pointed out that they were not on, he handed me two he keeps just for whoever has taken them off, he did not demand I put them on.

I'm 55 years old and have driven a bazillion miles (rough estimate) in my life and I can't think of a single time that reflectors on the side of a motorcycle have enhanced my ability to see it.  IMHO they were some federal bureaucrat's idea of a safety measure and ended up being required equipment on motorcycles.  They look like exactly what they are - a cheap afterthought that as a practical matter really does little to enhance safety.  (Again, MHO.)  I took them off both of my bikes at the first opportunity.  That said, based on the foregoing I can see that there are many others who feel a greater sense of safety and security because of the reflectors.  I have the utmost respect for their opinion.  To each his own.

As you can see, I took them off. If they can't see this bike, reflectors ain't gonna help.

Plus, since I'm trying not to add anything to this bike that says "Look at me", the reflectors had to go.

I didn't even heatum.....fishing line works great. I used MEK on the residue, but any solvent based cleaner will work.

Mine are gone! I thought they looked cheap! I don't think anyone sees them while the bike is moving. My wifes oldest son told her the bike looked great but the reflectors were ugly. I had been trying to decide if I was going to remove them but when my wife told me what he said it became a no brainer! I used
Dental Floss
WD-40
then Mothers Chrome polish. Looks much cleaner, less busy.

We live in the country---took mine off and put them on the mailbox. Glows like a firefly when I drive up on it at night.

Mailbox! Great idea, cause people keep backing over mine leaving my driveway.

ALL reflectors on every bike I've ever owned only stayed affixed till I arrived back home with my new ride and plugged in the heat gun.

That includes the fork reflectors, saddlebag latch reflectors AND the one at the bottom of the licence plate holder.

Yup, got 'em all!

Love chrome, hate reflectors!

Mine are gone too. I just peeled them off and used GooGone for the residue.

If you bike just completely dies on you in the middle of a dark intersection, then it might be helpful for that crosstraffic to have a way to see you pushing your bike.  I'm just going with the odds and assuming that exact scenario isn't going to happen to me at any time in the near future.  If it does, I'm running when I see headlights coming in my direction and I'll be on the phone with the insurance company real quick.

I just realized that I forgot to take them off of the Vrod I just got.  Whew!  Lucky the reflector police didn't catch me.  But what gets me more than the reflectors is the number of people that I see that have never taken any of the stickers off their bikes.  I can't even leave a sticker on my Bic lighter for an entire day.

Only took mine off from one side, found it to be the answer as to why I was leaning when riding with no hands!
