Stress cracks on rear lower fender piece 2016 CVO SG
« on: March 21, 2021, 08:26:43 PM »

Anyone else get this type of stress cracking? I’m thinking it might have been bumped or backed into something although there is no sign of abrasion. We bought the bike with 6900 miles in her... didn’t go over here with a fine toothed comb. Probably will end up getting a new piece from Harley$

Possibly backed into something that wasn't so abrasive (ie. drywall, etc.) or possibly something even softer (plastic bin, etc.).

I have a 2016 SESG white, rear fender did the exact same thing. Cracked and spidered right around the curve. I was lucky it happened before warranty ran out. Harley replace fender with new. Since it was warranty I have no idea how much it was.

$336.74 for painted from New Castle Harley.  $377 from Ronnie’ HD and most other Hundred Dollar dealers...not that I’m complaining.

$336 for a completely painted new fender ready to bolt on?  I'd do that in a heartbeat.  Any (good) painter is going to charge a good bit more than that to R&R the part, match the paint, and prep and paint the fender.  $336 isn't bad at all.

The price is for the facia piece which attaches to the fender.
We had 3 bikes in our trailer and one of the straps that was supposed to automatically tighten didn't and our 2017 Deluxe rubbed the side of the rear fender against our '75 Honda 400-4' brake pedal...down to the metal. We bought a new fender from Harley (still waiting for delivery) for a little over $700. Eventually I will have the other repaired and put on the wall of spares.

Thought that $300-something sounded awfully cheap for a fender.  Especially from the MoCo.  Even so, as painful as $700+ might be, it's still probably at least competitive if not cheaper than what a good painter would charge to match the paint then prep and repaint the fender.

If I had any real patience for the work, didn't actually hate doing it, and had realistic skills there I could make good money as skilled body and paint tech!

No kidding! I used to restore cars and motorcycles. So getting the paint right, reducer, hardener, and the clearcoat system and to blend it is more work than I have time for. Not to me tion my gear is all from 25-35 years ago.

Wow is that cheep.  Had to replace the Front Fender on my 13 CVO after hitting a deer.  At 20% off it was dang near 1000 dollars.

Overtime i had learned not to trust my straps, since then I have purchased many moving blankets from Harbor Freight ($7 a piece)  and cover the bike, especially points of impact. I have also move onto double carabiner locking straps, best investment ever especially for peace of mind.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JPS6Y9E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
