One of our members has asked for a poll and discussion on "favorite" GPS units. Obviously no poll is ever going to list all the options. But here is at least something to start with. Whatever else ought to be listed, pass it on. Will add them until we run out of space.
So, what is your favorite GPS units and why? I'm assuming we're talking about for motorcycle use.

I have the 2620 What I like about it is nothing to download, Touch Screen, able to store routes, it is real good about routing the RIGHT route.

Some here have had problems with the mount system. Perhaps with the GPS unit as well though memory of that seems hazier. I do remember hearing of enough difficulty to know that I'd never drill big holes in my inner fairing to mount it when other options put more capable units on a handlebar mount.

I have a RAM mount on my RK that works very well and looks like it belongs there. The unit sets in the middle of the handle bars under the windshield bag. Is there a better mount for my 06 FLHTCUSE than the handle bar mount? I know I'll have to change the U-Bolt but just wondering if there was a fairing mount? I kind of like that "it belongs there look"
if you know what I mean.

i have a garmin quest, i didnt see the need to pay the extra for the HD on the front, having the dealer DB loaded would be nice but the data is available online and can be loaded in to the non HD version.
the bigest draw back is storage capacity, but the quest2 would allow for all of north america to be loaded at one time
i like that is fairly small and has an internal battery, i have dropped it into my vest pocket and used it on foot for getiing from place to place sight seeing
it can be bar mounted with a RAM kit just like any other GPS

I have the H-D unit. H-D had a special 200 + - price drop on these a few months ago, it maybe still in effect. At the l;ower price, it is worth that. I have only one major complaint with this unit; if you have an 05 or earlier radio, the voice op only works in the aux mode. If you think you can listen to tunes and get a priority interupt for directions like every other unit, your wrong. I thought I had done something wrong in the installation or set up so I called H-D and Garmin. Both said voice priority will only work with the 06 radio. Plus since the only aux input is on the front of the 05 radio, you have that stupid cable that has to run outside the fairing. The only good thing about the inability to prioritize direction commands, is that you can pitch that out side cable in the can.

I use a Garmin street pilot (older unit) clamped to the handlebars. Portability is the key! The integrated HD unit for the 2006 bikes lack features and the all important portability.

I'm going to purchase a new unit after the first of the year, I started with a garmin GPS 2+ 6 or 7 years ago and upgraded to a GPS 5 in 2003, now it's time for the next upgrade, right now I like the 2730.

The 26xx series are all superceded now by the 27xx series units. There's still stock to be had. But if you're thinking in that ballpark you might at least look at the 2720. Might also ask 103Thunder. I think he's either just got one or is in the process of doing so.

I just bought a new HD Quest unit for $500, I'm happy and thats what counts.

I was looking at the Garmin spec's on the 2730, it looks like it is able to down load real time color weather radar from XM WX satellite. This could keep you from riding into some real weather problems.

Brian, on the rare occasion I take it with me in the truck I have the voice prompts.

i couldnt load them all in one shot but i used the indivual state files. and load for where i'll be traveling. i'm hoping if/when HD updates theirs i will be able to use it

I surmise that the memory would be sacrificed from the description that is given using this method. I really didnt see much memory gain from dumping my original hd database, it was more a mistake on my part. from what you loaded what kind of memory is sacrificed from state to state or whould it be practicle to load the whole United States from your experience?

i tried loading them all and it wouldnt fit :'(
right now i have all of the new england dealers loaded and it doesnt seem to take up much space, i think the problem is there is a limit to the number of waypoints you can have saved on the unit

Am running a Street pilot III for about a 1 1/2yrs now and love it big sceen(not touch screen) and can use it wearing gloves. Have it hard wired to the cigarette lighter inside the fairing.

In the hardwiring of your gps, where do you make the connection inside the fairing and where do the wires emerge.? Also, do you use an airplug to hear the voice prompts? I have the same unit and have been plugging it into the lighter itself. I am not happy with that due to the chaffing that has ocurred.

I use this on a roadglide. I too attach the unit to the left side of the handlebars. The problem arises when the stock power cord touches the left side glove box as it travels from the cigarette lighter to the unit. Is the lighter hot only when the bike or asscessory position is turned on? Any advantage to hooking it to one of the blank assessory swtiches on my fairing?

My 2720 showed up today. I haven't heard this b!TcH that everyone's talking about yet, because I've just been playing with it in the house, but this thing is really intuitive to use! It also came with mapping software similar to MS Street & Trips that can be used to upload routes and waypoints to the unit as well as retrieve data from the unit via USB.
Looks like it will be a really slick tool to have on the bike! Now I just have to get my mounting hardware and power cord for the bike, but I guess there's still plenty of winter left to do that. :'(

Hey Brian, it's too early to be unwrapping your Christmas presents, even if you gave it to yourself. Har! Where did you get this one from? I saw some people on eBay taking advance orders. Spyder, I got it off eBay. Here's the auction/price: Garmin 2720 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5838539186) It was the best price I'd seen running over the last couple of weeks.
The 2720s are in good supply, although this particular guy did oversell his stock which caused a delay in getting mine while he got more from his supplier. You should not have to wait too long if you want the 2720. It's the 2730 that everyone is taking the advance orders on. They are supposed to be available right after the first of the year sometime.
I'm debating between two different types of mounts. The one 2LR has and another. Not sure which way I'll go, but I'll keep you posted!

Garmin 2620, like the pre-loaded maps feature and have not had a problem with the hard-drive on scooter. Also use it in the SUV, and it's even better in a quieter atmosphere [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] May go to a newer version 27XX when the pricing comes down, after initial market frenzy. Would like to have some voice options as in Sexy, sedate, seductive and "wake up you dumb chit you're now on the airport taxiway" [smiley=2cr_01.gif]

This thread has really helped make sense of what one needs to consider when purchasing a new GPS, it has also provided options on mounts and wiring. I've decided to order a 2720, now I need to look at what mount will work best with my SEEG.

Black Dog, good choice! I've been having a ball with mine and it's only been uptown and back so far. I'm going to take some photos and give some a short review of the functionality of this machine sometime soon. Worth every penny I paid for it!
The lady does get rather annoyed when you deviate from her assigned route, however. Found that out today when my wife to the shortcut to McDonalds. Once she figures out you're not going her way, she says, "Recaculating" in a very disgusted tone of voice, LOL! I'm not going to want to listen to that chit for very long, I can tell you that! Also, by the time she comes on and tells you it's time to turn, it seems she's a little late. I agree with Don, the written directions on the display are more than adequate and easy to see and interpret at a glance.

If they went to the trouble to put mood inflections in the voice (recording?) why not have some real fun with it.........."yu silley chit, why yu no turn last road?" Marketing! Hey, Spyder, yeah, there are 24 different voices/languages. Some of them I've never even heard of before, like Suomi. On the English choices, there are 5 to pick from: 2 American, 1 Australian, and 2 British. I think one of the American and one of the British are males as the other three have female names next to them. The one I was being scolded by today is named "Jill."

Bubba, there is no spcification published on the CPU speed of the 2720 that I have found. You might check the Settings menu to see what the map detail is set to on your 2620. If you have it set to "most" it will take some time to re-draw if you're navigating around using the touch screen. My 2720 takes a brief time to re-draw, even set on "normal," but doesn't seem overly slow.

I've got a Garmin Quest and use a RAM mount. I didn't want to pay the price for the Harley unit and didn't want to drill holes in my fairing. The RAM mount allows me to transfer it from bike to bike very easily. I use the internal battery on the bikes and have a DC power/speaker cable in my car. I also have an older Street Pilot III that I donated to my wife when I got the quest. Another nice thing was even though the Quest came with a different software package, it was compatable with the SP III and Garmin allowed me to use it on both units without paying any additional license fee. I've never had any problems with either of the units and would buy another Garmin if I was shopping for a new one.

Here's a hell of a deal...I did a search on e-bay for Garmin 2720 and as I was scrolling down I found several "Buy it now" for $145-$181 dollars for a new unit...sellers are from China...I think I will buy thru an established e-bay seller in the US...I have done quite a few deals thru e-bay and have not been burned yet, but I think the above deal could be a loser..

Lot's of good info on this thread. Followed the link to Cycle Gadgets earlier in post for the Garmin 2720. They list a package for the HD Ultra Classic. My question is: are all the accessories listed required? The mounting kit ($49) refers to the 2620 and the KTG Base Module for $20 does not provide description for purpose. Anyone with experience with purchase from these folks have comments? Any other mounting options? I have read some of the complaints about some of the options but difficult to visualize not having any of the gear.
Still have my old Garmin III that I use in my boat and on our ATV. Saved my bacon many times up on Lake Powell during storms.

I"ve had the Garmin 2620 for a couple years now. I use it both in my car, rv, and also on the bike. I live in VA, taken it on trips to MI and FL by car, and used it by bike on trips to TN, MD, MI, and throughout VA. Found some out of the way roads and used it to lead a group of us back to a motel when the ride leader "got lost". I've used it to get around traffic jams, find the next "Wendy's" along my route, or the next "Shell"---it's absolutely fantastic. It's a must have when you're outside your local area. It's mounted on the left handlebar using "RAM" mounts and plugs into the DC plug on the fairing. I even hear the voice and chimes to get my attention before the next stop. It removes easily so I can lock it in the trunk. After having used it for thousands of miles, I wouldn't be without it! The new model, 2630 sounds nice especially with XM loaded but you can find the 2620 for $200+ less......PM me if you want more specifics.......BTW, I have no business relationship with Garmin, although I do own some of their stock..... ::)

I use an HP iPaq 6340 (6315 in the US) with Tomtom Navigator software, bar mounted in a water resistant case, which has a soft membrane on the front for using the touchscreen.

I have an '06 HK Advanced Audio System, and as far as I can tell the AUX input can not provide any priority over the radio. You still have to be switched on the AUX channel to hear the input from the GPS.

Well, this is sort of a different animal, but I just got the Garmin 76CSx and really like it. Havn't used it on the bike yet (she's not here yet), but have used in the car and am thus far very pleased with it. It will run up to 18 hours on two NMH batteries (or Alkaline). I got the "Auto Package" which comes with the V7 Garmin NA Cities software CD, two different mounts for the car, the cig lighter power supply. This is called a "handheld" unit...the screen is vertical rather than horizontal like the 26/2700 series, but it's still plenty big to see without any problems. It comes with 156MB removeable memory (plus some internal as well to hold basic data), but I got an additional 256MB chip too. I loaded most of the Southeast on the 256 chip, and have the 156 for a spare, or to load other types of maps on...topo, marine, etc. The unit is waterproof (it will float, in fact), compact, and completely portable. RAM makes a mounting kit for it as well, so that will go on the bike. I backpack/Camp/Fish, so needed something portable yet with a high degree of detail, and this seems to be the ticket. Got it through gpsonsale...by far the cheapest place I could find for the unit and accessories. It doesn't have the biatch talking to you, but has beeps (not loud, and selectable) to let you know about upcoming turns, etc. Overall, and for my purposes, it's hard to imagine anything better suited. I have a few questions to ask. Hopefully they won't be too stupid. But I need to ask them anyway.
My sweetie gave me a surprise today. She came home with a HD Road Tech Quest GPS unit & mounting kit.
My questions are:
1) Is this the same unit as the Quest2 or the older version Quest?
3) Does the HD unit HAVE to be mounted to the inner fairing or can I use the handlebar mounting bracket found at www.cyclegadgets.com for the Quest2.
I've been considering the Garmin2720 as of late, but the internal battery and portability of the Quest unit appeals to me more for off bike/out of car excursions.
If this HD unit cannot be mounted on the handlebar I will be returning it to the dealership & purchasing the Quest 2. I will NOT drill holes in the inner fairing to mount!
Lynn was unaware of the mounting bracket HD sold her & agrees that I should not be drilling holes in fairing if I have another option for a handlebar mount.
Any info would be appreciated.

I believe the Harley Quest in the first Quest version. You may want to check a website like Gpscity.com where you can compare features between the Quest one and Quest2 and to see which features match the version Harley one you have.
Harley has just come out with a handlebar mounting system with a cradle to mount the HD Quest. You don't have to mount it on the fairing.
Good luck and I am sure you will like either GPS (Quest or 2720) ;D

Man, I've got to say that the Garmin 2730 would be my favorite! I'll admit it's the only one that I've ever used. However, it's an all in one package. My thanks goes to Twolane who educated and helped me along the way and to hd-dude who did the install and hardwire.
I ride an 04 SEEG (they didn't come with satellite radio or MP3 player) and I now have satellite radio, satellite weather, and satellite road conditions ahead that also provides alternate routes for the weather and road conditions. This thing is the ticket. Also, got the XM actiavated last night and it's actually louder then my stock stereo or CD player and I'm liking that. Ch 74 (Blues) is already stuck on my XM.
