Someone needs to do a review of this thing with the GXM-30 - this is how you get the weather info with the GPS right, give us the scoop on how it works to convince us its worth the extra money, I mean after all its not like its chrome ;D

Done Deal Ceej>>> Just got the antenna and will be doing the install, then a trip to Mena AR. Middle of Aug>>>> Stay Tuned>> Greg

I am using a Garmin 478 with the GXM antenna. For I now I just have the antenna stuck to the top of the GPS, using a piece of steel with double stick tape for the magnet. Crude, but will work until I get a chance to go in the fairing. Only problem I have now is on bad bumps the antenna pops off  :o

Those using the GXM and have the GPS hardwired for power be aware, the GXM consumes a "lot" of power. The antenna gets warm to the touch when on, that should be a clue.

So be aware and don't kill the battery on your 800+ pound bike  :drink:

BTW, I put in an accessory switch in the "blank" spot in the fairing and use that for power, this way I can just hit the switch if I think I'll be long enough to be concerned about the current draw.

The weather packages are so expensive I probably will pass. XM weather is a little pricey, especially if you live near the coast and want to use all of the weather features. Up to $100 per month plus a $100 activation fee.

I've got the 478 also. When using the GXM30 I just put it into the lower and have no problem with reception. As far as pricing, I use the basic marine fisherman package and have it turned off in the months I don't use it.

I am waiting for the next round of Garmins to incorporate the WX Weather. I'm guessing a Zumo 650 is right around the corner with the weather capability. It makes so much sense for a motorcycle GPS, it isn't even funny. I like my 2610 and think I'll probably miss it when its gone, but if I can get live radar on a Zumo, I'll get over it.

Well I don't have the Zumo but do have a 2730 with the GXM-30 antenna (came with it BTW) and it works great.  Trip to FL in May I avoided some major backups around Jacksonville and some raindrops and a major accident around the DC Beltway on the return trip.  Just using it around town it tells me if there is a backup on any of the major roads as you get on them if you just have the GPS on, or ahead of time if your using it for routing.  Not sure what others are talking about for the pricing, it's $16.95/month to have the XM/Weather/Traffic.  Now when ya get the radar overlay I can certainly see that kick'n the $$ up a bit.

I've got the 478 also.

AJ, you a south paw? I think I would have trouble using the GPS on the left side. I am using the tech mount too. actually have two mounts on one clamp, using the 2nd one for an iPod.

I just put my GXM inside the fairing last night, looks encouraging, inside the garage I had a strong signal even after putting the fairing back on.

Nope. Someone on here told me to put it on the left & I did. That simple. Now that it is there I like it & don't do well with change ;D.

FRT8TRN I'm using the radar when it's activated. It is cool! You can see the weather right on screen overlaid on the map.

Now thats cool, the ultimate setup I'd say.  Don't think I can convince the wife I need a NEW GPS just yet, seein that I just got the 2730.....but maybe next year....or if this one "fell" off the bike. LOL

I'd wait. There's gonna be changes made I'm sure. The main change I'd like to see is an FM modulator to allow FM transmission to a radio so XM can be played w/o a wire.

You wouldn't be happy with the quality.

1 Techmount clamp and 2 Tech Mount plate assemblies.
The hole in the bottom catches the clip on the iPod case.

Also, I tried the GXM inside the fairing. On top of the radio it worked great

I second that FM Transmitter comment, I don't like it on my XM INNO. It is about 30% lower signal level and flat - no matter how you adjust it - its dull - and thats with my Hawg-Wired ultimate setup.

Porthole - the XM weather package you want for is the XM / Navtraffic / Weather for GPS package - 16.94 a month. The $100 packages you see are for PC systems for radio / tv - stormchasers, that sort of thing - from what I understand. That said I still want to see what a Zumo 550 shows as far as weather or traffic is concerned before I spring for the GPS, and 2 $200 antenna's ( one for the truck - makes it a business expense :) )
