Zumo bites the dust!
« on: September 24, 2007, 10:47:50 AM »

Well sort of!  We were out riding yesterday and the Zumo kept putting up some weird errors.  First it said "Incorrect USB connection".  I pressed the OK button and that went away.  About 120 miles later, a new message appeared "Zumo must be in powered base for XM receiver".  Pressed OK and that message went away.  Another 20 miles or so and a new message appeared, "Continue on batter power" with the countdown running.  So I pressed OK to continue and figured I somehow blew the fuse.  The remainder of the trip home, I kept getting and dismissing the "XM reciever" message.  Once I got back home, pulled the seat and looked at the fuse - fuse OK.  Pulled the mount off of the bike and took it to the workbench.  I pulled the Garmin plastic mount apart and found moisture inside.  The moisture had zapped the small PC board where the XM/USB connection is made.  It seems that during our ride through the storms of hell last week had allowed enough water to make it's way into the base through that small connector on the mount just below the power connection in the mount.  It seems that almost every other orifice on the mount is potted and water tight.  This port is the exception.  Good news is that the Zumo works great on the other mount, so new mount is on order this morning.  Because I am not using the XM feature on the Zumo, I have taken  a small dab of silicone and sealed that small cover closed on the other mount bracket.

Missed that one!  Could have saved myself $60 and a little heartache as well.  At least the problem was isolated to the mount only!  I wonder if any changes have been made to the new version 2.0 mounts?  I'll let you know when I get the new mount.  If not, silicone to the rescue!

Hey 'D00d', did you glue your USB/XM socket shut in the power cradle?  If so, did you do the rubber cover so you could un-glue it if necessary to use XM in the future?  :-\ spyder

Nope. I haven't done anything with mine, and I've been thru a gully washer that would choke a toad. :nixweiss:

Another 'mounting' question (I know this is the wrong thread, but...) when putting the cradle on the Techmount, do you put the velcro patch on and use the mounting bolts or place anything between the cradle and the techmount plate?  :nixweiss: thanks, spyder

I used the velcro and didn't place anything else between them. I did go to a nut/bolt store and got shorter bolts of the same as came stock just so I wouldn't have as much sticking out the back of mount. Take a look at these posts to see the difference- stock screws and short screws.

Any issues not using the velcro and just using bolts?

you won't regret spending that money.  The Zumo is a neat addition to a touring scooter.  It just adds to the already great experience of riding these fun bikes.  8) har!  spyder
