Cell Phone Tracking and Location Ident
« on: January 29, 2008, 03:37:54 PM »

Verizon has a feature called VZ Navigator that when enabled / AN INTERNAL GPS CHIP /allows 911 to locate you off of one cell tower .
Its insurance if you ride alone and run off of the road an out of sight from passing cars . A standard phone signal takes at least three tower hits to do this and in the country it aint gonna happen.
I had a friend run off of the road last night and he was in the ditch for 8 hours busted up before he was found.
He lived because his armor riding gear was insulated and kept him warm. But could not move because of his broken back.
911 could only trangulate 2 towers / Location within a 1 mile square with  lot of undercover.
I enabled the gps tracking on my phone today.

David,

Sorry to hear about your friend.  Sounds very serious.

I understand the safety reasoning behind the GPS cell phone tracking, but sounds a little scary....Kinda Big Brotherish?

If you go in a strip club when you tell your wife you're out riding, leave the cell phone over at Mcdonald's.

The cell companys have been doing it for years with triangulation , at will.
The new cell phones have a GPS chip that makes it more accurate.

I recently found out that at least one of the mobile phone companies will not activate a older model phone because it doesn't have the 'locator chip' embedded in it.  I wonder if this is across the board with all providers now.  It is good from a safety stand point, but, as mentioned, could be used to monitor ones location.  :-X spyder

i have heard that a cellphone that is turned on can be used as a bug? removing the battery is the only sure way to prevent this. scary.

the tracking feature of a cell gps is available to the public but requires special software.

oneday newborns will have chips implanted at birth.

You can turn of the "Location function" in your phone (Verizon) whenever you want.  The phone is NOT GPS!!!  The GPS system is through the Verizon server.  The post about triangulation is correct.  If you loose cell phone coverage you will have no location info.  If a Garmin is sitting right next to you you will.

That said though...the navigator funtion in cell coverage is better than the $1800 NAV in my Corvette and the $2200 NAV in my buddies 535i BMW.  And my LG Voayger only cost $250.00. Also, you never have to update the software for info because Verizon does it for you.

How do you turn it on and off?

I could be wrong but I think you have the option of turning it off or on if your paying for a service to allow an individual to find you.
I think the 911 locate service is always on . No option.

My Verizon LG has two choices under the "settings" menu. "911 only" and "location on". Got to pick one or the other. No friggin idea how it works.

Go to Settings & Tools...Then Phone settings...then Location..then select E911 only!  You can also do it online I believe.

However, if you are somewhere other than your home location you'll have to turn it on briefly to let the Server no where you are to use the NAV function.

Thought E911 was so when you called 911 they could pinpoint your location and 'location' option was just the opposite - someone could call you and tell where your phone was located.  According to cust svsc agent at Verizon I spoke to this is correct and only law enforcement can use that option.  She said folks called in all the time wanting Verizon to 'locate their phone' but they could not, only leo.

If anyone else got different info please post.

Ultra,
You are correct.  Due to privacy, you cannot simply call up your provider and ask to locate, say, your spouse and find out where she is.  There are tracking services that you can purchase, and are touted as great ways to keep tabs of your kids at night.  But those are separate from the geolocation service provided by your phone.  The only option you have is to turn the feature off, except for 911.  That feature always remains on.

Don't worry about the cell phone if you have the new GPS Radio in your new CVO bike. You are probably already being tracked. Insurance for HD in case you don't make a payment, can you say REPO?

911 can locate your phone anytime they want to. Unless you remove the battery.
