2012 FLHXSE3 Power outlet install.
« on: August 07, 2011, 09:32:58 AM »

I figured I would post the install for the power outlet that Harley should have already put on a $34000 motorcycle
Skip the instructions and run it through the quick disconnect for the saddle bags. way cleaner.

start by removing the plugs from 2 open terminals in existing connector. I assume that you already know how to take off the bag

Remove the harness from the power outlet and run along side the factory bag harness. Zip tie in place.

These are the terminals that you need to wire the outlet to the factory connector

Pry the pin retainer out of the bike side wiring

I have the correct crimper, but most will work. If not solder the pins to the wires.

Install in the open holes. Reinstall pin retainer

Remove the torx screws that hold the bag side connector together.

I had a right angle drill for making the holes from inside the bag so I could put the outlet as close to the factory plug as possible. If you don't, mark the out side and drill

Install rubber grommets (supplied with power outlet) into holes you just drilled.

Remove plugs and pin retainer from bag side quick disconnect.
Now for the most complicated part of the install. Find or buy some additional wire. Install terminals to both ends. Remember, you need the whole harness that came with the outlet to run on the bike side.

Install wires into bag connector. make sure polarity lines up with the one on the bike side connector

I don't care for spade connectors, so I soldered the connection to the power outlet.
Install supplied mounting hardware and reinstall bag.

Done.
Should have been a factory piece though

Crap I forgot to mention that you need to plug it in to your Battery tender lead.

There's an unswitched power source that would feed tour pak lights.  Why not pick up power there and leave the battery tender lead open for a battery tender?

For the simple fact that I plan on adding a tour pack later. That, and if the bike is parked I won't be using the power outlet and tender at the same time.

Plus Harley was nice enough to make a cool little plug in for the tender that comes with the outlet

There is an unswitched (A+ hot all the time) spot you can use.  Won't affect any accessory circuit.

Not sure why the 2012 doesn't have a factory plug my 2011 has the plug on the lower left side of the batwing. Unless you mean a power outlet back in the bags as I like your idea and will probably add one to mine after seeing this. Could always use more power outlet with todays gadgets and smart phones short battery life.

That one is still there.  I just don't like having my phone unsecured to use that one.
