Heated grips
« on: August 10, 2013, 09:48:12 PM »

Hey guys, I wanted to put heated grips when I change my bars. Going with wild 1 W0515 bars, but my real question is when I went on HD site to look at grips; for CVO RG fitments nothing is offered. Non RG heated grips are offered, can anyone answer this for me? Is it a wiring issue with this bikes wiring harness?

Rich installed the heated grips that matched his stock 13 grips. They work.

The HD branded heated grips are notoriously prone to failure anyway.  A many years long issue that's never really improved to the point of being good.  Go with any regular grips you like and check out the grip heaters from a company called "Heat Demons."  Many here have had very good luck with their products.

I had installed them on my 02 UC (3 weeks before trading it in on my SERGU) Pretty straight forward install (exterior wiring  though) and they worked really good.

Have installed a dozen or so of the Heat Demons.  They way they're made how did you wire them externally?  They're really intended for internal wiring.

I've installed 5 sets on 5 bikes....4 (5th bike was traded in) still functioning as intended. Easy to install, reliable, and the controller fits/looks like it's factory.....but with dimable LEDs for intensity indication. Another plus is they revert to 'off' when the bike is shut down....a bit less load when starting and you won't inadvertent get hot hands

directions on my set had me drill a small hole in the bot time of the bar in front of the grip. Used the supplied grommet. Was still a biotch getting the wires through that hole.

I think that hole was for the wires for the control switch to EXIT the bars.

As Dayne mentioned that hole described wasn't for the wires for the heated grips.  The grips wires are small and without any outer wrap.  Their connections aren't terribly strong either.  They aren't intended to be outside the bars and exposed to the various hazards of pulling, wind, drunks on parking lots, etc.  They really should be an inside the bar installation with the protections that allows.

Yup.

I think I see the confusion here. I should go edit my first post. The heat elements are inside the bars along with the wiring connecting both elements together but the control wires for the switch were external on mine. My 02 did not have any internal wiring in the bars to fight with like the newer TBW bikes. Still had a throttle cable setup and all the other wires for the lights and radio and such were external.

Even though I do like and use my factory heated grips from time to time, I think you would benefit more from investing in a good set of Gerbing heated gloves with a dual controller, that way you can use them on whatever bike you happen to have, and they do work great. Just a thought.  :2vrolijk_21:
