RECOMMENDATIONS ON 3/4 helmet??
« on: June 09, 2007, 12:57:05 PM »

Have decided to add a bit more protection but not go with the full face. Any recommendations for what 3/4 helmet to try.  I have a longer narrow head versus the global shape.
thanks in advance

I use the Arai with built in flip down shield. Probably the most comfortable helmets I've had. Not sure what scoot you have, but if your interested in built -in headsets and speakers check out J&M Corporation. I'm sure there is a thread around here somewhere.

I have a Nolan N42 Outlaw, it comes with a pretty cool shield system that incorporates a long clear shield and a shorter tinted shield that operate independently from each other.  I’ve used it without the windshield on the bike and it cuts the wind very nicely, did not experience any lift but there was more noise then I thought there would be.  I have the same type head you described and the first couple of times I wore it, I experienced a pressure point in the forehead area after about an hour or so but now that it is broke in I no longer experience that.

Good luck with your search

I like the HCJ and the Harley ones (made by HJC I think).  I have 2 of these Harley helmets set up with the J&M headsets to use with a passenger while touring.  No complaints.  It is pretty easy to switch from the sun visors to the full face shields which come in real handy in case of rain.  Just keep the full face shields in the right saddle bag along with the other touring stuff I usually take with me (rain suits, etc.).

Question for those that have the 3/4 helmets. How well can you still hear the stereo w/these? I currently have stock radio w/Hogtunes speakers. Anybody w/same set up that wears a 3/4 helmet let me know how well you can still hear the music. I'm considering something like this in order to hook bluetooth headset/microphone up to my Zumo so I will have phone capabilities.

d00d-

I ride with the 3/4 Arai or Nolan full face with stock radio and Hogtunes and have no problems with hearing the radio.  I just have the stock exhaust though.  The Arai 3/4 is the most comfortable helmet I have ever owned.  Hope this helps, Bob.

Bob,
Thanks that helps. I have Rineharts also maybe I should have included that in my previous question.

When AJ, Hoist and I were in NY at the dealers a tech pulled out of the parking lot with a helmet on that was an open face that had a shield that flipped up and over the helmet. I've never seen one like it before. I've searched several sites looking for a helmet like it.

No it wasn't a flip up helmet. I own several of them. If I had to give it a style for reference I'd say older pilot helmet. The closest thing to it that I've found is by MOMO.

The one that the tech had on clearly had the just the shield all the way out of view. I'll find it even if I have to call there! ;)

Arai SM/Z , has been the best for me and if you have a Ultra you can get the SM/C with the built in headphones and mike. Double check on the model names I have as I always get them out of order m it could be SZ/M or ???

That is the only helmet I've used this century with the J&M Speakers and Half cord so I go between both bikes with the same setup. ( You only different lower cords for your other rides or lawn tractor) :)

Looking into the mystery helmet some more I came across the AGV. I like the fact that this is an open face helmet with a shield that raises out of site without sticking up in the air like my modular helmet does. At one time I carried a shield for my 3/4 helmet in my saddle bag but it got pretty beat up. I'm going to order one of these and I'll let you know how it works.

Gary,
I don't have the Hog Tunes speakers, but still have the stock.  You saw the 3/4 I had when we rode SLD with Howie.  I can hear my speakers just fine even at 75 and the Vance and Hines thumping in the background.  Obviously, a half shell doesn't cover the ears and the radio is a little louder, but I don't have any complaints hearing the stereo just fine with the 3/4 on.  Hope this helps.

Charlie,
Thanks. :2vrolijk_21: Have to decide if I want to pull the trigger and get the helmet and bluetooth set up. Feel like I'm not using all the capabilities of the Zumo not having it. :nixweiss: I sometimes forget to turn off Zumo (ignition on bike) when I want to place/receive a call and person on the other end can't hear me when the phone is "bluetooth" connected to the Zumo.

Gary,
I think you'll like the capabilities that having the 3/4 will give you.  I like the fact that I have the intercom (when I have my better half riding with me), GPS, and CB (if on), coming through the helmet speakers, and having the music coming through the bike speakers.  I know you won't have that flexibility with the Zumo, although I believe there is a switch box you can buy (can't remember the company, NADY, I think), that you can route your GPS, or anything else you want, to the helmet.  I'm thinking about buying the bluetooth module for my SEUC, so that I can call hands free.

Gary,
Check out this link...this is a combiner that you can buy from J&M.  It might be just what you're looking for to do what you want with a 3/4 helmet.

Jacques,  That is some pretty spacey looking helmet you found there.

Gary, not positive, but I believe my pipes are a tad louder than yours, and I have the same stereo and speakers you have.  I can hear them loud and clear with 3/4 or full face helmet.

Yes they are, and everytime I hear them they remind me of how much I loved those pipes on my fatboy. :2vrolijk_21:
Now that you mention about the full face I sometimes wear a full face when it's colder and you're right I can still hear the tunes.
