Been using a RAM mount for my Garmin 2720 but on my new '07 planning to use the Tech Mount 30997C or 30997MC.
-
I really hate saying this in public, but my shaft is only 1.5" long and maneuverability is no problem.

Jerry, I have the short "arm" as well, with the 2820 unit and it works just fine with the stock bars. I'm sure you've researched this already, but when you order the mount, make sure you get the one with the chrome mounting plate and the AMPS pattern...the Garmin cradle will then mount directly to it with no "in between" plates. The whole piece is chrome then!!! That is always a good thing.. [smiley=pepper.gif] [smiley=orange.gif]

Jerry,

Thanks Terry.

If you want to mount it on the left handlbar/switch housing... try the Harley XM mount. Part # 76422-05 if you have a E/G type bike. Comes black, I gave $22 to have mine chromed. Also need the two spacers, HD part #5854. Buddy has already mounted his with these part #'s. Works pretty slick. Unit is at the right angle for viewing. Wiring can be ran thru the Clutch Master cylinder line hole in the fairing and a couple of cheap connectors you can rob power off the cig lighter plug.
This mount comes as part of the XM radio kit, part #76390-05 if you want a peek.

I saw an '06 SEUC @ Savannah HD w/ Canadian tags last week that had the GPS mounted on the dash pad. A metal "L" bracket between the windshield & the dash pad. A hole was drilled into the pad w/ a recessed female pulg for power. Looked pretty slick. AJ

The only thing to be cautious about in mounting one of these things is to always keep in mind that the technology is changing so rapidly...if you put any kind of permanent mount on the bike and make holes in the fairing, and the unit craps out on you and is no longer available or repairable...you're stuck with the holes in the fairing. Same if you ever trade the bike. For this reason I personally prefer a "temporary" handlebar type of mount, whether clutch clamp or clamp on the bars. I'll give up a bit of the more "built in" look one gets with the fairing mount, for some degree of portability/changability. My 2 cents...

Terry & Don, I agree with you guys. I'm definitely into customizing my bike. But drilling holes to mount my gps is not happening. [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Terry and all.
-
Could some of you post some pics with the tech mount? I agree with you guys about the permanent mount, but unfortunately I had mine mounted on the fairing when I took delivery. Now, if I change to the Zumo for example, I will have to figure what to do with the holes in my fairing, and then replace my dash pad which I had modified. I guess you live and learn [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Here's a pic of the mount, but at this time I had a different GPS unit on the mount.

one more...

Does anyone know if the Tech Mount will work with the HD Quest (Garmin)? I want to change mine from fairing mount to handlebar mount and thought it sounded like the Tech Mount might work. Any part numbers/pics would be helpful. Thanks

I'll admit that I haven't read every post in this thread so this one may have been mentioned already.
Thanks to Porthole's (a member of this site) suggestion, here's a link to the mount that I use.....
http://estore.websitepros.com/817592/Detail.bok?no=46 Several members of this site have asked me where I got it so it's definately caught the eye of several here.
There's also several other threads in here regarding mounts, too, if you do a search.

Just ordered up 30999mc. Spoke w/ Dave (?) @ Techmount very helpful & pleasant. They're in FLA so I should have it in c couple of days :) AJ

Came in today but... got the wrong one. I needed 30997mc in 1" . Should have it on Tuesday.

I got the Techmount installed this week. I'm taking the Velcro off and using Garmin's double sided sticky pad. I'm worried that the Velcro will not hold at speed.

Hope this helps.

You do realize the Garmin cradle will screw directly to the Techmount base, right?

The mount for the 30997 did not have AMPS holes in it. I'm going to look & see if they are intrerchangable.

hard10,
I'm using a Touratech mount on my current Ultra with a Garmin 2610. Had a bad experience sailing along the Trans-Canada Highway a couple of years ago, bouncing over "road snakes", when my double sided, high strength tape decided to let go. The GPS flew about the length of the power cable straight up :'(. Funny part - I reached out with my left hand and caught the GPS :). Ended up bungy-cording the GPS to the mount until I got home from vacation. Ordered the Touratech next day. Wouldn't use anything else. They are expensive - but are well made and I haven't "launched" a GPS since [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif].

That's wierd, that's the identical mount I got from Cycle Gadgets & it had several holes drilled in it. I just had to match them up to the cradle.
-
I found the plate that came with the 30999 and it had the holes in it. Swapped them out and mount it to the Garmin base with screws. Chrome of course! ;D [smiley=orange.gif] [smiley=orange.gif] [smiley=orange.gif]

Scot...what all have you ordered? The Techmount in chrome with the Chrome AMP pattern plate? If you've got that coming, you'll need the Garmin Cradle to mount the unit to the AMP plate on the Techmount. The 2820 comes with a speaker built into the cigarette plug, but you must be careful when using this...if you turn the forks to the left to lock them, this speaker plug will hit the left front of your tank. If you want to hard wire the power supply, you will need another power cord with pigtails, or you can use this same cord and go to Radio Shack or a Marine Dealer and get another cigarette lighter plug with a 1AMP fuse, either in-line or blade type, and make it up custom length. If you use the cig lighter for power, i would mount the unit on the left bar. If you want the unit to talk to you through the stereo, you will also need a 3.5mm stereo patch cord to go from the output side of the 2820 and into the Aux In on the face of your radio. I can get you all these part numbers, places to purchase, if you need them. The 3.5mm stereo patch cord is available at any Music store (guitars, amps, etc), but the ones with a 90 degree connection are hard to find...I ordered mine. This cord also allows you to play the MP3 songs you have stored on the GPS through the bike's radio, and Jill (the GPS beutch) will override when she needs to tell you where to turn.
-
Following are parts I used to mount/wire up my 2820 on the left handlebar of my bike. If someone has found better sources/parts, feel free to chime in.
Techmount chrome mount for the 2820 or Zumo:
From: http://www.techmounts.com/products/index.php?page_function=detail&product_id=61
Mount: 30997MC
Chrome Plate (AMP pattern): 60991C
Following are things needed for only the 2820
Power supply cord for 2820 from: http://www.cycoactive.com/gps/powint.htm
Part number: GC12V26
From Garmin or other Garmin accessory supply house: http://shop.garmin.com/accessories_for_product.jsp?sku=010-00517-05
Motorcycle mounting cradle, part number 010-10495-01
The following can be used on both the Zumo and the 2820, or any other 3.5mm output you want to feed into the front of your radio.
From SoundProfessionals, 3.5mm Gold Plated Stereo patch cord: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-SPSC-7
Part number: SP-SPSC-7 (you choose the length..this is a 90degree on both ends, with gold plated contact points...24" will get you from the left handlebar, through the bar openings in the lower inner fairing (use a coat hanger to fish the cable through there...easy as pie and no need to remove fairing). If you want, you can get it in a 3 meter length. This will take the MP3 stereo signal and voice commands from the GPS and input them into your Aux In on the front of the radio. Might as well get two...they're cheap. 90 degree ones are hard to find, so I got an extra just in case. The 90 degree bend looks cleaner on both ends when hooked up, and gets things headed in the right direction.
Then purchase a standard cigarette lighter power adapter, available from Radio Shack, marine supply stores, etc. The marine version will tend to have a waterproof entry for the cord, if you think it's necessary...the one I got from Radio Shack worked fine...just a dollop of black silicone to seal where the cord enters the adapter plug. It also has a green led to let me know it's powered up and the fuse isn't blown. I've not had a problem with vibration, etc. I have this power supply cut to length, so there are no wires bundled up on the handlebars or the back of the unit.
I initially ran the 3.5mm patch cord through the bar holes, fished through with a coathanger...a couple of chrome wire ties hold things in place and excess wire is just pushed into the inner fairing. I now have the 3.5mm run from the unit, through the clutch cable hole in the fairing, then to an additional AUX IN on the back of the radio, so the wire would no longer be visible going into the input on the front of the radio. Installation of this additional aux in is covered elsewhere on the forum for both 04/05 radios and 06/07.
Sorry, but I can't seem to find all of this in one location, so I had to order from seperate suppliers. No issues with any of the above vendors, at least when I ordered.

Thanks man...
i appreciate the detailed data...
i missed the garmin mount..one of the package deals i looked had had it included..which in my mind processed as they all did..
nope..good catch!
ordered and enroute..
i have a handful on the 3.5 cords that i use with intercom/ cell phone/motorola/ ipod chite... i like the 90 degree bend thing though.. i'll work that tomorrow
help me out on the power cord thing..
the power cord has a SPEAKER in it?
do i want that?
so..do you recommend using the lighter plug or hard wiring it?
the mount i ordered is the one from techbiker.com with the AMPS bracket that Porthole has.. seems worthy
Thanks for your help!

If you're going to hard wire, you don't need the speaker cigarette lighter. The 3.5 mm plug carries the sound to the stereo. Power comes from the standard Garmin power plug either hard wired or cig. plug. At least that is how my 478 is.

Scot...The speaker in the lighter is convenient for use in the car, with the unit mounted onto one of the included mounts that come with the 2820...the bean bag type thing works well in most cars...it's in the box. On the bike, it's too large. I did not want to cut it up because of use in the car.
I personally like being able to remove the power cord via the lighter arrangement. Another good option if you don't mind pulling the fairing off is to hard wire one of the SAE type plugs like you use for the battery tender to the back of the cig lighter plug, and the other to the power cord mentioned previously. You could then route the pigtail just out of one of the fairing holes, either the clutch hole or the handlebar so the pigtail would sit just outside the hole. If you do this, make the exposed metal part of the SAE plug Negative so the metal part won't be hot when it's not plugged in to the power cord for the unit. It's got a little cover cap, but I would still make the exposed metal part negative so there would be no chance of it getting up against something metal and blowing a fuse. Do you picture in your mind what I'm talking about here...it's early.... ;) ? While you've got the fairing off, run the 3.5mm cord through the clutch line hole, across under the radio, then out the right handlebar hole. It's a shorter distance from the mount on the left side to the clutch hole and makes a neater install. If you hard wire the Garmin power cord in, when the unit is not on the bike, be sure to use the little cover for the unit end of the cord...it has exposed contacts and will short out if it touches metal.
I think I know the cradle you're talking about...it's rubber isolated...nice unit, but if I may be blunt, it's butt assed ugly :P ;)
One advantage (the one you're getting may have this as well) to the Garmin cradle mentioned in my post above is that the unit end of the power cord cannot slip out accidently, as it has a recessed place for it to sit when hooked up to the unit...in other words, you slide the power supply onto the unit, then snap it into the cradle, and use the little locking tool (a torx screwdriver) to lock everything down so it cannot be removed without someone having a torx screwdriver in their pocket. Like everything, there's more than one way to skin this cat...my way is just one that worked for me.

OK gang:
I got all my doodads here except for the audio cable..but i have one that will do,,,
gotta get the cig lighter plug from radio shack and then that will be done
questions:
1) the black techmount rubber grommets... seem to be awful long for a # 6 screw... is there some magic to getting the screws to bite? ( yea it sounds stupid but i spent about 40 minutes tryin to figger it out.
2) where is the best location to mount the tech mount handlebar mount? left side...but any hints as to where?>
this leads me to
3) i seem to be having a hell of a time getting the handlebar clamp to , well, clamp on the handlebar... >:(
getting the allen screws to line up is a behaaatch.. any helpful hints on this ? im trying to do it without an extra set of hands... which would probably make life a lot easier...
pictures/ hints?
mounting GPS for morons ? anyone anyone?
thanks

Scot...seems I remember more than one size screw in the package, but I could be mistaken.
Let me see if I can find pics of mine...
-
Scot...here's a link that shows WHERE I mounted the Techmount on my left handlebar...still looking for one that shows the rubber grommets.
this was shot when I had the handheld on the bike, not the 2820, but gives you some idea of where the clamp goes.
-
Dammit Scot...can't find a photo with the rubber grommets showing...I have them on my home computer, but not here at work. If another, longer set of screws came with the kit, cut them to length...seems that's what I did with a pair of crimping pliers that have small bolt cutters built in...a dremel would work too. The Garmin Cradle is what is holding you far enough away to keep the bolt from catching...look in the Garmin box too for screws..

I ran into the same problem using my techmount; screws were too long. I went to a local screw dist and was able to get the exact size I needed. I did find out that the original screws/nuts are metric, so I bought stainless steel metric to match so I could use the nylock nuts. Pretty inexpensive and looks clean.
-
TC,
I had a hell of a time. They wouldn't return calls or answer the phone. I kept leaving messages and they finally sent me the correct mount. I had talked to my credit card company and had paperwork in hand to dispute the charge. I had even left messages that I would just pay for a new mount if I had to but it all worked out.

UPDATE:
Found the long screws at the local neighborhood specialty screw store... ( thats legal in Vegas, right?)
got her all together... had to fight with the damn 60991 plate... ( badly designed IMHO)
beat it into submission... and she seems to be well set for a ride..
just need to do the power cord and wait patiently ( !) for the audio cable...
then im in bidness
thanks to all for your help!

If you have a set of wire crimpers, most of them have a set of screw cutters on them. I used this to cut them off and then used the grinder to relieve the end of the threads so the nut would go on easier.

Don't forget the simple solutions. If you cut off a bolt (and have room to do so) leave a nut on the bolt above the cut point. Then after it's cut clean up the cut line on a grinder or (hopefully) a wired wheel as necessary. Then spin the nut off and let it chase the threads for you as it's removed.

hey gang.
i wasnt clear the long screws work like a charm..
the allen screw that holds the mount plate is a PITA..
badly placed, hard to tighten and keep tight...
the plate is missing some , uh, teets, which would help
but all is well

Scot...part of the mixup on this part was that I called Techmount to get the part numbers for you guys and that's what they gave me. I have since learned that they are including the AMP pattern chrome plate on the MC part number...no need to order the other plate. You might want to consider giving them a call to see if they can offer you the plate that comes standard on the MC mount now...I think it has the "teet" on it to keep it from rotating. I have had good experiences with their customer service, so I think they will work with you if you have issues.

Phil...the cord I got was 2 feet long, and it worked running through the handlebar holes over to the aux in on the front of the radio. It will also work if you run to the back of the radio, but if you run through the faring (clutch line hole), then out the right handlebar hole, I'd get a three foot to have a bit of slack. Let me find the link to the HK Aux mod...hd-dude did mine, and it was the first HK that's been modded this way to my knowledge.

That's my radio in the pics...I sent it out to Jim to let it be the guniea pig for the group, and as always, Jim came through for everyone!!!

What a nice job!
Since I am not an electronic specialist, can you tell me what happens when you put another stuff, let's say an Ipod, in the front auxiliary input?
Otherwise, my understanding is that, if you want to listen to the radio, you have to unplug your Garmin at the cradle, or am I wrong?

Phil

Phil, I ride an 04 SE Electra Glide so my bike did not come with XM radio. However, XM is available through my Garmin 2730 and I use the little cable that goes from the GPS directly into the front of my head unit..........the same as I used to do when using my Ipod Nano. In order to use that jack you have to have your head unt set on "Auxillary". If you have an Ipod or GPS XM plugged in and you wish you listen to FM radio you just cycle your stereo from Aux. through the CD, Weather, AM till you get to FM. Then, when you want to go back to XM (or Ipod) you just cycle back through.

Regards,
Phil
Honestly Phil, I don't know, as I have not tested that. Jim might be able to answer that question if he sees this. The reason Jim broke the connection, if I understand correctly, is to allow the radio to "think" it has something plugged into the front Aux input even though it does not. This allows the "mode" to stop on Aux when you scroll through, even with nothing plugged into the front. I don't think you could run both at the same time though. Unplugging the GPS on the handlebar is not a big deal though.
