Title: Engine Temperature Display
Post by: matthiasbeier on January 22, 2015, 05:47:47 PM
I am new to the Harley Davidson world and riding a 2015 CVO Road Glide Ultra.  I cannot find any engine temperature read out/display, even though I read on their website that the Info Button would display the engine temperature.  Any insides would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Malthiasbeier,

The info button (located on left extremity of the right indicator switch button) will give air temp & oil pressure. I can find nothing anywhere that provides oil temp without adding/modifying existing instrumentation.  Love to hear about it if you find it.

Cheers Tom

LOL agreed! You prolly don't want to know your actual cylinder head temp!

You can get the Oil Level and Temperature Dipstick with Lighted LCD Readout-63004-09 Part Number 63004-09 (http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/oil-level---temperature-dipstick---lighted-lcd-readout-pa-10-6300409--1)

I have had a couple of these over the years and I can't say that they are particularly reliable.   :nixweiss:

When in doubt, the first place to look is that Owner's Manual that's supposed to come with every bike.

There is no built-in oil temperature measuring capability, since Harley doesn't install an oil temperature sensor in their bikes.  However, their engines all have a cylinder head temperature sensor that provides data to the ECM, and the Twin Cooled versions also have a coolant temperature sensor as well.  The data exists, so the next question is does Harley make that data available to view on the infotainment screen, and if so how do you access it.  I'm sorry that I can't answer that for you, but if it's possible I'm sure it would be in the manual somewhere.

Thank you all for your responses.  I guess that the required info, such as engine temp etc., is collected and available within the Infotainment system.  Unfortunately it is not displayed at any of the screens and the manual makes no mention of it.  Coming from other bike models I was used to have engine information available, not sure why this is not displayed (I thought that engine temperature is one of the vital indicator for engine health).

Thank you again.

From my experience with three of these they are particularly unreliable, lol.   ;D

Nothing in the owners or workshop manuals, nor any mention of how/what to do to get the readings. I imagine you would need to do the same as for previous models ie replace air temp guage or put an extra guage in somewhere. Unsure if anyone is across what needs to happen (or if it can) to get readings from ecm on oil & coolant temp to show on screen. Love to hear about it if it can be done.

Cheers Tom

My digital dipstick made it 2 years and the oil level sensor went out.  Temp seems to still work but I went ahead and took it out as decided I really did not want to know the temp when stuck in traffic in 90 degree weather.  When the motor temp begins to feel like a sauna on your legs you know its pretty hot in the upper 200's.
