HORN!!!!! Can you hear me now??!!??
« on: May 04, 2015, 09:57:25 PM »

I am looking for a few different options for a "loud a$$ horn" i have looked at the air horns, compact units, hellas, I can't make up my mind. I want a horn that will make the 90 year old ornamental prius driver head for the ditch when it goes off.

I've often thought a couple horns off of about a 65 Caddy would do the trick.....just don't know where we'd hide em. :nixweiss:

Anything short of a monster charging system, a 2 gal air tank and a set of big air horns you'll be stuck with the pathetic after market stuff. I don't care how loud someone claims they are, unless you're pushing a lot of air, they're not going to be much louder than a car horn.
Two of my trucks I've installed train horns on. 150 decibels. Those move people out of the way but the size of the system will never fit on a bike unless you want to use the whole tour pack for the tank and compressor.

My answer has been multiple electric (not air-) horns. Where, how to place them is a fabrication project.
I have two pair of hi/low tone chrome horns mounted and only one can be seen at all, peeking out from under the heat deflector. One is in the stock location under the stock cover and two are mounted on a custom bracket I built behind a bag. They are WAY louder than the stock horn. Using a relay is required.
I intend to mount at least another pair when I can find the time and a place.

I have always had good results from using the MiniBeast horn mounted in stock location on my Harleys. I bought them from Propad when the sold them but now they can be bought from Custom Dynamics,
http://www.customdynamics.com/mini_beast_motorcycle_horns.htm

I like the fact that they send sound out away from bike and not like a trumpet horn which would send it into a set of lowers and in turn reflect back to the rider. Or other locations that send the sound down or backwards. There have been sound studies on emergency responder sirens and even they have trouble being heard by motorist at  highway speeds since the sound appears to catch up to the motorist as the emergency vehicle is passing.

As mentioned above,  a train horn takes up a lot of space............

When I first hit the horn on my '15 RGU, I was shocked how loud it was compared to my '09 (which I'd modified to make louder).    :o   You might take a look at the new bikes and see if you like the horn sound.  HD is using the same horn cover and it appears to attach the same.  Could be a simple solution for you.   :nixweiss:

Hey Greg, the 2014/2015 stock horns are suppose to be 15% louder than the previous years.  I know they are larger than the pre '14 horns as I bought one.  It is louder and a bit larger than the stock horn that came on Ginger.  I can tell a difference so it was worth it changing it out and still look stock.

Upgraded to this horn and really happy w/it... I have the air wing horn cover to match my air wing breather cover and wanted to maintain it so using this new horn it fits under that cover.

By chance does anyone have the Harley part number for the 14/15 horn?

Do they fit under the stock pre 14 cover? (May still be the same cover)

Yeppers, it does fit under the pre '14 cover and the part number is:

From the '15 CVO RGU Parts Manual:

Horn Assembly= 69060-90H

Horn cover:  61300478   Appears identical to the '09 cover I still have.
