WHERE TO MOUNT A GPS
« on: February 19, 2008, 05:35:23 AM »

I JUST GOT A TECHMOUNT FOR MY GPS. HERES MY QUESTION. WHICH SIDE OF THE HANDLEBARS DO I MOUNT THE GPS..
LEFT SIDE, RIGHT SIDE OR MIDDLE. I AM RIGHT HANDED IF THAT MATTERS. MOST OF THE POST I HAVE SEEN HERE THEY ARE MOUNTED ON THE LEFT. ANY REASON FOR WHERE IT SHOULD BE MOUNTED.
THANKS MICHAEL

I mounted mine to the left of the middle.  On the left side of the tach.  I guess it's mostly personal preferance.

Michael, mount it where it is most comfortable for you. There was an earlier thread on this and it was about 50-50 on which side.

Michael I mounted mine on the right as I use a cup holder on the left side. I cant drink and drive with my right hand so I do it with my left..(WATER)  ;D That the reason mine is on the right.

As others have said it's a personal preference. You didn't mention which GPS unit you'll be mounting either. If it is the Zumo then I'll add that other then the off/on button all the other buttons are on the left side. Mounting on the left side makes it easier to use these buttons (w/your left hand) and see what the unit is doing. IMO

Mounted my Zumo 450 on the left side. When I'm not using the cruise control you can keep your hand on the throttle and still work the GPS. Still mostly personal preference I think.....

No smart remarks, but a concern. This came from the Garmin website concerning specs on the nuvi 350.....

Waterproof:  no
Motorcycle-friendly:  no

I would be concerned whether the unit would be able to stand the vibrations and not being waterproof would be a big concern.

Side opposite the throttle as you will be pushing buttons on the fly.

This is the BEST reason to put it on the left.  This way the wife can't tell I playing with the GPS.   :cherry:

Had my previous GPS on the right but after I bought the ZUMO, I tried the left and like it much better. I have found after a little time the Zumo is seen at the far left of my vision field and am able to do the basic commands with my left hand while looking straight ahead and keeping my right on the throttle.

Michael,

A couple of things. First, if you need a cradle, PM me your address and I'll send you one.  I put one on my bike while awaiting the release of the Zumo and I still have the mounting cradle (it should mount up cleanly with the Techmount).  Secondly, be careful with the power connection with the Nuvi.  I'm not sure whose kit you are using, but keep in mind the Nuvi requires a 5V power source and it must be maintained very close to 5V!  If it's not a regulated power supply, but just a diode array to produce 5V, stick with internal battery power and save your Nuvi.  I was using brand X motorcycle kit and wound up going through 3 Nuvi's before building my own power supply (Retailer kept replacing the units, but not sure how long that would have lasted).  Best advice would be to put the Nuvi in your car and put a Zumo on the bike.  The Nuvi (350) works fine to get you from point A to point B, but only allows 1 via point.

Your Nuvi WILL NOT hold up long on you motorcycle. A few post i have read in passed claim they dont hold up to vibration and they are not waterproof. Also heard of issues with glare and daylight viewing.

good luck....

lilbear thanks for the heads up on the power supply. i keep the nuvi in the truck most of the time. I will be using the gps on the bike 2 or 3 times of year. the rest of the time the techmount will be off the bike. I really dont like the way it looks on the RoadKing. But since i have a gps i thought i would give it a try this summer.About the cradle i allready have one..thanks lilbear..And i would like too thank everyone else for there response.

Try both sides, then decide which side you like best.

I am left handed, and is many other areas, found the opposite of what many do works better for me. My GPS is mounted on the right side of the handlebars.

Yeah, but I lack the ability to understand most of it.

Ok, I lack the ability to understand all of it.

Bluffing here is not a viable option.
