Mapsource v 6.14.1
« on: August 09, 2008, 10:27:25 AM »

This new version seems to be much more demanding on computer resources.  It is much, much slower than the previous version.  Is my computer just not capable or has anyone else noticed this?  I'm running in on XP 1.60 GHz processor with 768 mb of ram.

Is there any way to go back to the previous version?

Jerry, just generally you need more RAM.  Running XP and just about anything else you're trying to float a navy with two rowboats and a popgun with that little RAM.

Jerry, I have the same XP with a little more ram(1.1G) and I couldn't run it.  It was even slow on a friends Quad Core, too much graphics data I think.   I sent an e-mail to Garmin but haven't received any response.

I reinstalled 6.13.7 (2009 update) and all is well again.  To go back, you need to uninstall MapSource completely.  Then reinstall the Mapsource base program first; after that you can reinstall the 6.13.7 directly.  You can skip any in between updates.  If you don't have the 2009 update, I'll send you a link to download it.

Here you go- http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/msource/ .  When you look at the site, they use "6137" instead of 6.13.7.  The reinstall will want to also download to your Garmin/Zumo, let it.

What else are you running; what processor?  My Pentium IV at 1.1GB won't handle it.  If you also have a Pentium IV and it works with 2GB RAM, I'll up mine.  Lots of people on the Zumo Forum are also having problems.

I'm calling BS on this. I'm running a Dell Inspiron Intel Core Duo T8300 @ 2.4 GHz with 3.49 GB of RAM and this program s**ks. You can no longer click on a route and move it to add way points. It takes forever to zoom in & out regardless of map detail. Thank you for posting the link to the old version.

OK.  That's awesome.   :2vrolijk_21:

Still doesn't change the fact the program works fine for me.........the way I use it.  It is noteworthy that I do not use the program to level of which you write.  I usually find two points, and let it plan the route for me.  Anything more complicated...........and I may as well be at work.   :)

ok, what other services running on your system, do you have malware, is there something running in the background that is eating up resources?

there are so many variables, unless you had the same HP laptop I am using - its apples to carrots...   :carrot:

mine runs great, I can add move delete waypoints, recalc the route all if it and there is no delay.

So I'll stay away from this one for awhile, unless I get that new OctaCore 5 Ghz with 8 GB of ram laptop I saw in the back of Popular Mechanics. Maybe I'll build the homebuilt hovercraft instead.

Being the geek I am, I go to something called the Gartner IT Summit most years - two years ago the CEO of Intel was the keynote.  He said they had in development an 80 core that will do real time language translation.  Would be out in the year '15 or so.

Going this year (Orlando baby!) wondering what has changed in two years.

I don't know what "malware" is so I don't know if I have it or not. To compare apples to apples, I was using the previous version of Mapsource on this laptop. Now I am using the latest version, on this laptop. Nothing else has changed. The software functionality has drastically changed however. Unfortunately, there were features in the older version that seem to be no longer available. It doesn't appear to be a hardware issue as much as it is software related.

Henry, I am glad to see that the program is simple enough for even you understand how to get from point "A" to point "B". However, there are some of us that are a little more sophisticated and would like to be able to use the software to it's full potential. I am sorry that I write in such a manner that is difficult for you to understand, but that is based solely on my education level and has no correlation to the software's functionality.

Thank you for clearing that up for me.  It helps me if you break things down into words with two syllables or less.  Actually, I'd prefer pictures, espcially since I don't even know what that one "s" word means, let alone how to spell it, nor do I have any education beyond the eigth grade.  Like you, I'm glad people still make products that even us "simple minded, less-refined, uneducated" folks can understand.  It's all good.   :coolblue:

AJ - malware is spyware, or stuff you don't know is running on your system.  It can come from a virus, or a bad website that loads something on your system w/o you knowing about it.  Stuff like Spybot S&D and a good anti-virus keep you running clean.  Spybot is free and highly rec'd.

I haven't done any research into this since I am not having issues - but I have upgraded my mapsource a number of times.  This time I did a clean install, no upgrade since I am using a fairly new laptop.  Often time when you load or upgrade software over old installs it can give you issues.  Can you uninstall the older versions, and then do a clean install with just the newest version.

I usually rebuild my systems every 6 months or so, they build up crap in them over time, especially when you install and uninstall stuff like I do, but even w/o that they get slower over time.

Sean........I see you've been to your local post office and found my and my little brother's picture on the APB board.

By the way, I'm neither highly complicated.....developed......nor experienced.  I'm more like.........John Coffey..........except I haven't been blessed with his gifts, my skin tone is a little lighter, and I'm a skinny, geeky looking little bastage with a big nose.   :huepfenjump3: :huepfenlol2:

I do not know if you intentionally misspelled the words especially and eighth or if you are demonstrating once again your ineptitude and lack of ability to use simple software. On the bottom of a post is a button to allow you to do a spell check. I have seen you write that you were studying to take your Masters exam so either you were lying now or before. Unless of course you are trying to unsuccessfully use sarcasm in your post.

My frozen carrot friend, I am using a program called McAfee that is supposed to take care of any spyware. I have used Spybot in the past but it has a conflict when running with McAfee.  Not to be a wiseass, but what I don't understand is how you did a "clean" install of an upgrade. The only way to get Mapsource v 6.14.1 is by downloading an upgrade. You have to have the older version in order for the software to run in the first place. There is no way to just to load the new version. As far as rebuilding a system, I think that is an excellent idea that I am going to try on an older laptop I have. Thanks.

What was your base install?  How many versions have you upgraded from already?  I learned that you can get the most recent download and not required to install the older version first- you should have an account on the Garmin page and can get your key from there.

On an older laptop I have, I had upgraded from Version 5 or so from my older GPS (60CS), but this was the first install on this PC.  So there are not 3 or 4 other versions of crap hanging in the system and mapsource/garmin folders.  That is what I am referring to.

Also, I have found that Mcafee is not catching the spyware that Spydot does.  Try MS Defender if you are having issues.  I have run both against the same machine and found that Spybot had better definition files and knew to catch more.  Your stuff is only as good as the last update also, so if you don't have new definition files, you are just scanning with old information.  I am running DoD provided McAfee that is part of a suite, pretty sure it is the same as you can buy - but not definite.  Since I use this to access USMC systems for Outlook Web Access and Marine On-Line I get to download these for free.

But again, I am running a duo core 1.5 with 2 gb of ram, Mapsource is set to high and it just smokes along - no issues.

You might want to bump your performance settings up, increase virtual memory/swap file settings to eek out some more performance.

With all the chatter about the product upgrade I got curious enough to try it.  Rarely used the old one anyway because it's such a pain in the ass.  Just not a great program compared to others in its market.

With only minor tweaking the upgrade, loaded as an upgrade, worked here much like its predecessor did.  Having said that, aside from its most basic functions it's still an annoying program that does things with far more difficulty than it should.  But it works here as its supposed to.  Will still only be using it if absolutely necessary.

Map loader really is its best utility.  It's just a pain (compared to others) to try to map and plot with though.  Not some software developers best day.

Have never taken the time to decompile any of it or, for that matter, even look at it closely.  Also don't know what the base code for the software in the hardware units is written in.  Mapsource is such a poor PC program though that I've wondered though if it's not just a port of what's in the hardware rather than something written from day one as a Windows app.

I did not intentionally misspell anything.  I just misspelled the words, and paid no mind to the spell check button, which I suppose is attributable to my ineptitude and lack of ability to use simple software.   ::)

AJ, I don't think you have ever seen me write.  ::)  I also don't think you saw my written words expressing my taking a "Masters exam."  What you may have seen is my written words expressing that I am working on my Master's Degree, and perhaps at one point I may have made mention of an exam for which I was preparing for a class toward that end.  It's all semantics anyway.   ::)

I should know better than to use sarcasm in a post when communicating with the King of Sarcasm.  How foolish of me.   ::)  I think I'll go crawl back under my rock of ineptitude and lack of ability now, and leave this intelligent conversation to Gentlemen such as yourself.   ::)

Have a wonderful Sunday.   :2vrolijk_21:

Sean, I think it was v4 that I installed. I don't have the disk here in SC to check. I then upgraded to 6.13 as soon as I loaded the original. From there I went to 6.14.1, the latest. Regardless of how slow it runs, it still does not preform the feature that v6.13 did. You used to be able to drag a route to a new waypoint and it would recalculate it fro you. You can no longer do this. You also used to be able to right click on a route to choose from multiple ones that may be overlapping.
I am going to take your advice and get a copy of spybot. Linda just told me she has a copy. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again.

I don't mean to open any old threads (or arguments) but I have to let everyone know that I reinstalled Mapsource 6.13.7 and what a world of difference! Much, much better! Thank you d00d for the link to the old version. I am not sure exactly what changes were made, but whatever they were I personally like the older version better.
