Mapsource Questuions
« on: September 19, 2008, 10:13:49 AM »

It says Mapsource will come unlocked with the Zumo 550 does this mean that after I load it to my computer I am ready to down load maps posted here or create routes? Or do I have buy or pay for something else to be able to do these functions? Thank You.  SQ

Sqrrl,

Once you install MapSource on your PC, you'll have to go the MapSource unlock and register your Zumo.  The installation program will walk you thru it.

I won't have to pay another fee to do this? I have heard that you have to pay to get Unlock codes to use it. Thanks

Will you be at MV next week. If so see ya there.    SQ

Sqrrl,
While we are on the topic of Mapsource DO NOT upgrade to Version 6.14.1 many have had trouble with this version not working properly. The version before that is 6.13.7 and you can read below (in red) how you can get that version. Also included info below is some other info you might find helpful...

Check out this thread - Standard GPS or Garmin - implementation starting at reply #11. You will find a list of all the parts that others and myself have used. I ordered my Techmount from them directly, used the Radio Shack power plug (but will replace it w/the one Terry found if ever needed), and I also got a cover to put on the face of the Zumo to prevent scratches from - Invisible Shield for the Garmin Zumo 550. Also check out this post - Zumo Tips/Tricks... this is a nice replacement security screw for the mount. The one that comes stock has this special screw/screwdriver that is a pain in the butt for us old guys. It is really small and hard to see. Both of the above threads have good information on parts, installation and tips/tricks for the Zumo.

Techmount 30997MC (these are for the stock handlebars (1") if you've changed yours you'll need to get one that corresponds to the diameter of your bars)

SOUND PROFESSIONALS - GOLD PLATED 3.5MM (1/8 INCH) RIGHT ANGLE STEREO PATCH CABLE (1 meter length)

Either one of the following two will be good for power plug if you want to use your cigarette lighter.

12V Flush Mount Receptacles & Plugs (Plug Only)

Sealink 12V Receptacles, Plugs, and Both (Plug Only)

The only other thing I did was went to a local fastener store w/the screws that hold the Zumo mount to the Techmount and got some shorter screws. You can see the difference in these two posts - stock screws and short screws.

Once you get the unit make sure you go to the following places to update and register your Zumo.

Product Registration

Web Updater (This will allow you to make sure your Zumo has the latest firmware)

MapSource software version 6.14.1 as of July 18, 2008 (It has been noted that this version is very graphic intense and has caused problems on some computers. I would suggest not updating any further then Version 6.13.7 You can go here scroll down the page and look for "MapSource_6137.exe". Click on that file and when box pops up save it to your computer {suggest saving it to your desktop}, once it's finished downloading scan it for virus, when you're sure it's virus free double click on it and it will install Ver. 6.13.7 to Mapsource). Don't try to use the update feature in the Mapsource program because it will not work. You will have to go directly to the previous link download it and then install. Note: You will have to do this w/all Mapsource updates.

If you are going to be interested in loading POI's (Points Of Interest) you'll need this also - POI Loader for Windows software version 2.5.2 as of March 28, 2008.

For those having problems with Mapsource or want to learn more about it try this - Mapsource Tutorial

Aight Mr Zumo, Gary, dooderator, my twin bruther from a different muther..I've got one for you.

I'm trying to d/l the routes craig posted for MV. Here's what I'm going through.

1.) I've got the 4 routes D/Led to my PC. They are in gdp format.
2) I plug in the Zumo and it starts "preparing to enter USB storage mode". That's a 5 minute process.
3. After it's in storage mode, I open route#1 with mapsource and then transferred it to the zumo.
4.) After getting it transferred, I unplug the zumo and it reboots or something, and tells me it's found new data. It asks if I want to manage that data (A scary thing) and I say yes and it imports it.
5) I then plug the USB cable back in, and start all over.

At this rate I'll miss the gathering.

Is there a faster way? I tried to import all four routes at once, no luck.

You can load them all at once.

What you'll need to do is click on the first route you want to load and it will open up mapsource.

Leaving that window of mapsource alone go and double click on the second route you want to load (this will open up another mapsource window). Once that is open click on the route, then right click and scroll to "copy" and click on it. Once you have the route copied to your clipboard go back to the first (initial) window of mapsource you had opened and under the route (left side of window) right click and scroll to paste. That will put the second route under the first. Keep doing this until you get all the routes in one window of mapsource. Once you have that done click on a route, hold down the control (CTRL) button and then click on all the rest of the routes. This should highlight all of the routes, once they are highlighted then hit "send to device" like you normally would with one route.

Now when you turn the Zumo back on it should show all the routes and favorites and you can click on select all and it will download them (you will have to do the select all on favorites and routes).

I gotta say that imo Garmin screwed the pooch on the Zumos.  What I mean is 1) it takes them much longer to boot up than my Streetpilot 2720 and 2) wtf is this chit where you have to 'import' newly found data, huh?  I mean with the Streetpilots you 'send to device' and wham there it is.  IMO it's kinda like the great improvement the 110 is over the 103.  Only thing I like about the Zumos is the battery so you can hook it to the computer without having to use an adapter.  Other than that I'll stick with my Streetpilot - and if it craps out I can get a refurbed on on ebay for about $150.
