Author Topic: HARDWIRE your GPS - 09 CVO Ultra - mount center windshield - will publish photos  (Read 5576 times)

I searched.  No clear answers.  I simply want to power a GPS and mount the GPS in the center of the windshield and tuck the wire down into the fairing.  Let's assume that I'll use a Garmin.  I will check input voltage matches or buy a Garmin "hardwire".  Where are you guys tapping power?  Is it fused?  What amp fuse?  It would be nice if at least the GPS powered on and off with ignition if not an accessory switch.  THANKS!  If I get some ideas, I'll photo the process and publish.

Been there done it.

1st I suggest mounting the GPS on the left side of the handlebars, it makes it easier to make changes with your left hand without taking your eyes off the road.

I ran my Garmin power cord into the fairing through the gromet hole for the line from the clutch master cylinder.  I spliced it into the cig lighter wiring.  I will have the fairing off tomorrow night replacing the cable as the plug that goes into the GPS broke.  Let me know if you want any other pictures.

All works perfect.

Been there done it.

Splicing into the cig lighter make sense.  That is probably already fused for accessories like the GPS.  Someone had mentioned a "spare" connector under the fairing - was curious about that but could not find the link again.

The left mount is a good idea.  I am sometimes afraid the GPS will be another distraction - safety concern.  I try not to mess with it much while riding and want to keep it as direct in my line of sight. That is why I was thinking centering it on the windshield where you have your XM / GPS antennas.

I will take some more pictures.  There is a cleanner mount that you may be interested in.  I will take pictures tonight when I replace the cable & give you the mount info.

The radio is Sirius, my wife had to have her football games in the fall and XM did not have football so I had both.  Now that XM & Sirius combined I added the best of Sirius to my XM & topok off the extra radio.

How do you like your 478?  Do you use the Weather feature?

No, it is a 9.5" Clearview with the upper recurve.  I am 6'4" tall & I love it.  No more wind buffeting the helmet.

 :jack: Mine is the Klock Werks. I like it A LOT for the warmer months. It's low enough for me to see over it yet tall enough to blow most of the wind over me. Here in the South, I needed something that would give me some more air in the summer. My better half doesn't like it as it is too windy for her. She says the wind blows over me and, as she sits higher than me, it hits her.



...How do you like your 478?  Do you use the Weather feature?

Back on topic, I love the 478! and it is now hard wired into the back of the cigarette lighter. Yes, I use the weather constantly. It was my reason for buying the 478 to begin with. I can see a storm coming and know when to don the rain gear or which roads to take to avoid it.

Here's mine, purchased all parts from Radio Shack. This way, I can remove everything from the bike and don't have to remove the fairing to disconnect the power. Spliced into the cig lighter plug.

Thanks for the power plug idea.  The reason I replace the power cable about once a year is the crappy plug Garmin put on the 276 series, it is very difficult to get out of the back of the GPS and eventually the rubber boot comes loose & the wires break.

The power plug in the fairing is great, easy to disconnect and remove a short cable with the GPS.

Off to Radio Shack!

They have a redesigned version. If you sent your old one in, they should replace it. Just call them first @ 800-800-1020. Don't ask how I know this.  ;D

Although I have always liked the Powerlet power points, I'd be hard pressed to make a hole in the fairing.

It's actually called the "Tip Fender Light". It is a blue wire and black wire in a connector. Not used on the SE models. It has keyed power meaning it's hot when the key in on.

Power lead from the Garmin cradle runs into the grommet already in the fairing for the cables.  Soldered it into the cigarette lighter wiring after taking off the from fairing clamshell.   Whole deal took 20 minutes once I had the mounts.

AJ, you are right, they are the fender tip light spades. Not used on the the Street Glide either. I used them to hook up both our GPS's. Seems to work fine. Roger

Mounted my GPS and hot wired it to a constant hot wire. So at gas stations it doesn't shut off. tonight I went out to go for a ride and the battery was dead. the only thing I can think of is that the unit was either left on or got turned on somehow. We have been out of town for a week and it must have drained the battery. So be careful if you wire it this way----I know I will.

I've never had the battery go dead but I have had the Garmin 478 not turn off. The battery on the unit (478 has it's own) will eventually die and will do so MUCH quicker with the XM antenna  turned on. That thing draws a lot of power.

Yeah, I don't usually use a battery tender in the summer when I'm riding it regularly. Hope that's all it was. Have it charged nicely now,but will watch it closely.

I connect the GPS into the spare power under the red cap?  That is fused 12V?  I connect to that and am good to go? :nixweiss:

Look, I admit I cheated. I pulled the spades off the cigarette lighter and "stuck" (i.e. no solder) the wire in the little holes and then put the spades back on. Just don't tell anybody I did it that way. 2LN will never let me live it down.
