Been using a RAM mount for my Garmin 2720 but on my new '07 planning to use the Tech Mount 30997C or 30997MC.

Jerry,  I have the short "arm" as well, with the 2820 unit and it works just fine with the stock bars.  I'm sure you've researched this already, but when you order the mount, make sure you get the one with the chrome mounting plate and the AMPS pattern...the Garmin cradle will then mount directly to it with no "in between" plates.  The whole piece is chrome then!!! If you want to mount it on the left handlbar/switch housing... try the Harley XM mount. Part # 76422-05 if you have a E/G type bike. Comes black, I gave $22 to have mine chromed. Also need the two spacers, HD part #5854. Buddy has already mounted his with these part #'s. Works pretty slick. Unit is at the right angle for viewing. Wiring can be ran thru the Clutch Master cylinder line hole in the fairing and a couple of cheap connectors you can rob power off the cig lighter plug.
This mount comes as part of the XM radio kit, part #76390-05 if you want a peek.

I saw an '06 SEUC @ Savannah HD w/ Canadian tags last week that had the GPS mounted on the dash pad. A metal "L" bracket between the windshield & the dash pad. A hole was drilled into the pad w/ a recessed female pulg for power. Looked pretty slick. AJ

The only thing to be cautious about in mounting one of these things is to always keep in mind that the technology is changing so rapidly...if you put any kind of permanent mount on the bike and make holes in the fairing, and the unit craps out on you and is no longer available or repairable...you're stuck with the holes in the fairing.  Same if you ever trade the bike.  For this reason I personally prefer a "temporary" handlebar type of mount, whether clutch clamp or clamp on the bars.  I'll give up a bit of the more "built in" look one gets with the fairing mount, for some degree of portability/changability.  My 2 cents...

Terry & Don, I agree with you guys.  I'm definitely into customizing my bike.  But drilling holes to mount my gps is not happening.   [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
