2009 FXSTSSE3 Solo Seat - Danny Gray
« on: August 22, 2013, 02:30:19 PM »

A few weeks back I ordered a solo seat from Danny Gray - pretty much the only company out there making solos for the 09, as most know.

Anyway, it showed up yesterday as a surprise - I love when that happens!!

I chose to go with black leather, with a grey/black snakeskin insert in the long flames pattern.  Accented with Pacific Blue stitching and an embroidered logo as is on the stock seat.

The seat is perfectly crafted and fits extremely well.  I spent more time removing the plastic film from the back fender yesterday than I expected though.  What a chore it was this time!  Waiting on another rubber plug from Lake Shore to fill that hole in the middle of the rear fender.

Looks great!  How did you get the logo added?  I haven't seen that with DG seats on their web site.

Thanks guys!  We've had torrential rain this afternoon, so I really can't comment on the ride yet.  Just sitting on the bike, I feel this will be a big improvement over the stock seat.

Dughr, I came across another thread here on the CVO forum that someone had added the logo on their seat from DG.  I called them back as I had already placed my order a few days prior.  When I talked to Sherry, she knew exactly what I meant, asked me to send in the picture of the logo just to be clear, and bam! it was added!

Looking at this seat, the stocker, and what HD is doing with some of the newer seats, IMHO it's almost a stock look.

It's great to be able to see that huge rear fender too.

Hi Fish Eye,

Nice bike!!

I am looking at getting a solo seat for my 2009 Springer. I love your seat! What would I pay for something like that from Danny Gray?

Just out of curiosity, how does the seat attach to the bike. I see there is no rear attachment piece to secure to the rear fender like most HD seats do.

I assume it is attached to the left and right rear fender struts under the seat. Is that correct. I did not see any attachment points on your seat.

Hope you enjoy your new bike..

Best regards..

Thanks!

From DG, this seat ran me about $475 US.  It was extra to add the CVO logo/embroidery, but I do think it was worth it, and makes the seat even more suited to this bike.

The seat attached via suction cup.  It's the first seat I've had like it, but they really do work well.  It's actually a very clean mount too.

Hope this helps!

Hi Fish eye,

Thank you for your reply.

Very interesting way to secure the seat. It is a very nice looking seat though..

I have attached a photo of my Black 2009 Springer for you. I have to say though, I really do like your Blue 2009.

Best regards..

Thanks Downunder!

Thanks for the picture of your Springer too.  I have to say, I really struggled with the decision between the black or the blue.

As for the suction cups, agreed, it is an interesting set up, but they're very secure.

I've gotten some time in on the new saddle and I'm happy with the purchase.

Take care!

I just ordered this same seat for my 2009 CVO and I have got to say the suction cup attachment is really bugging me. I am going to call sherry tomorrow and discuss this.... I am a hardware type of guy and they should have be able to make a attachment point that goes down in between the forward part of the strut like they do on the Rocker. That just seems cheesy as hell for a $400 dollar seat.

X2  I don't think I could go for the suction cup idea as the only thing attaching the seat to the bike.

Just a thought,

Purchase the seat from Danny Grey and purchase the chrome mounting bracket that is attached to the rear of your  2009 Springer Seat from HD and attach it to the rear of your new solo  seat.  It is only riveted to your seat. I think you will find the bracket has a part number on it. Have a look at the bracket on your HD CVO seat.

Drill a hole in your rear fender and remove the nut bracket from the fender and relocate it in the new hole you have drilled. Use the HD Chrome bolt that holds your two up seat to your fender and secure your new Danny Grey Seat.

You may find this may resolve your problem and alleviate using the suction caps to secure your new seat!

I'll admit that if I had know it was a suction cup mount, I may have felt the way you do now - thinking it's a little subpar.

Now that I have the seat though, I can tell you these mounts aren't going anywhere.  Looking at my seat, the stock struts, the stock holes in the rear fender for mounts, and suction cups start looking like a better option.

I've got other seats on my 2010 CVO Road Glide Custom.  Not that the mounting hardware is obtrusive, but they're definitely not a clear looking as the seat mounting on my FXSTSSSE3.

If I hadn't posted the pictures of the suction cups, how would you feel about it?  The first pictures I posted show the clean look of the seat on the bike.  Can't sweat the small details.

Hey Fisheye,  I'm with you. I think your seat installation looks clean and like it was part of the bike from new. If I hadn't asked the question, one would never know it was secured with suction caps..

Still think your bike looks great!!

Best regards..
