Title: Carplay Mic workaround for GTS
Post by: rayson56 on October 29, 2021, 01:16:29 PM
I know this topic has been covered here somewhere in the past.

I decided to order this Carplay jumper/override from Ebay this morning.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/353725679252?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1ExZBDoAsQMWwc05RARHkJw55&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=353725679252&targetid=1262375642056&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9033390&poi=&campaignid=12873834712&mkgroupid=117462212370&rlsatarget=pla-1262375642056&abcId=9300536&merchantid=420526602&gclid=Cj0KCQjwt-6LBhDlARIsAIPRQcKGUAP3rnIrIEPASUteBd6oAjdocJamOmz72v567V-vZ0BKDJrXpxcaArGZEALw_wcB

Since I'm mainly a 1/2 helmet guy and I rarely ever use my modular helmet that has my Sena 20 wireless setup in it, but enjoy the features that Carplay offers, especially the far superior navigation, I decided to pull the trigger on this workaround. From the research I've done this upgrade works flawlessly. You can even use your handlebar controls to navigate through the Carplay screen.
The only drawback seems to be that if you do decide to use your headset Carplay will not work.

Once I get it installed I'll report back, but I know a bunch of people here have already done this or something similar, so feel free to chime in.

Upon a little further reading I see that this upgrade apparently will not work on our CVO's with WHIM enabled. Does anyone have any information or experience on this subject?

I've read more than one thread on the Roadglide site about this. I don't have anything that new so I can't answer your question but I know I've done enough reading about it that I even get confused.

The guy that figured this jumper thing out and initially started selling them is a member over there also. I'm sure He'd have the answers you're looking for but I can't even remember His screen name at the moment.

I had the mic shut off by the dealer, that was a early work around, but I think if I update the software in my radio it will undue that flash and then I would have to use my headset to get Carplay, When I use the headset I can still take calls and talk on the CB, so I dont know what shutting off the mic did, but I know Carplay works with or with out the headset for me

Rather than buying the jumper and having the WHIM disabled by the dealer, I just turn the headset on and put it in the bag.  Only downside is it needs to be charged at the end of the day.  I can also just charge it while riding from the accessory plug.  Works well for me and allows me to use the headset along with CarPlay if I change from the half shell helmet.

Ditto.  There is / was a setting accessible with digital technician under CarPlay to disable the mic.  I had it done on my 2020 in January 2020.  It is not a CVO and does not have the WHIM but I think it would have worked in any case.  It did not disable the mic from any function.  It simply lets CarPlay activate without having to recognize a mic.  Prior to this 'fix' I had great trouble getting CarPlay to activate and stay active although I did have a mic plugged in.  After the fix it works fine about 99% of the time.  I have updated the software to my radio and it did not disable this software fix.

I'm not sure but I've heard / read that perhaps this software fix is no longer available.  Don't know why it would not be . . . but then again it's the moco.

I was able to cancel my order and went out for a ride yesterday trying your suggestion, which I had seen somewhere, but had forgotten about. Carplay worked great but....when I shut off and re start the bike Carplay would not resume unless I unplug and replug the phone. Phone is an iPhone 12 mini. Yes, I have the latest updates.
Any help there?

Also, I had read about having the mic turned off at the dealership, so when I finished the upgrade from the GT system to the GTS and needed it flashed, I asked my guy to turn the mic off, and he said that Harley had recently made it so that it was not an option anymore.

Thanks for the input guys! I love this site  :xyxthumbs:

Confirms what I had read elsewhere.  Not sure why they would do that but I guess there must be some way for them to get more $$ from customers I imagine.  Glad it worked when it did.  That unplug / plug / in what order, etc., was what drove me crazy before I had the software fix.  And even when I followed proper (suggested) protocol it didn't always work.  Hope you get it working to your satisfaction.

It’s an Apple safety thing.

Not sure if Apple maps is better that Google maps, but I also bought WHIM for my bike, '19 RG Special, so it did not have it stock, bought headset and started using Google maps on Android Auto. I am disappointed because again, Google maps is great from point to pint, but we are still stuck with trying to import and use any GPS program to get this.....plan cool routs for motorcycle riding. I have found using GTS navigation is just as useful as Android Auto for point to point stuff. I do like being able to find POI's, cigar shops and the traffic rerouting of AA, but would love it if Google (and probalby Apple) would let you amend a routs and save that route. And yes, I have tried to use GPS visualizer and it too failed me.

The only thing I can add is very early on after the bike was purchased (11/18) I played around with a lot off trial and errors on making the helmet unit work as an accessory and store it in my tourpak and have no mike or any other parts attached.

Because the CVO came with the WHIM it seemed to be a solvable option in the end. I do not believe I went to the dealer to check or uncheck any headset or related changes and updates so far have not changed any thing. :) :)

You are correct, I update the software in my radio and Carplay still work without a headset

I figured out a way to get CarPlay on my 2019 CVO with whim.
I have the HD wireless headset plugged into the 12 volt plug (right side of the fairing) just to keep it charged. When I turn it on I stick it in the storage place which is just to the right of the GTS.
Now for the good part! I use a USB to lighting cord for my iPhone. Plug the USB end into the USB data port plug which is located in the storage place ( where you just put the wireless headset) and plug the other end into my phone! Once the wireless headset connects to the bike, which only takes about 10 seconds, plug your phone in and boom, CarPlay on my CVO!
Of course I did lots of wire hiding and it looks and works great!

Question.
Now that you have your CarPlay working and the headset plugged into your 12v plug, how do you get your headset to work when attached to your helmet?

Does the Sena need to be plugged in to the 12v outlet?
