The lawyers in the crowd might hop upand yell, "objection, foundation."

Pinging after a tune is only fairly gauged if the bike is run with the same grade fuel it was tuned for.  If you tune with a tank of 93 or even 91 then get pinging at 87 or 89 that's not something to be directly cited as a problem or question.

If you get a good tune it's not a bad idea to do it with 89 in the tank.  Once tuned for it you can then use it forever.

I always intend to run premium fuel...but if I find myself in a situation when I can't...I'll run mid grade or even regular.  I don't have pinging with any of the fuel grades....

Hmmm, we got very good quality fuel supply over here, usually take 98 or 100 and smarttune runs were done with such fuel only as it's recommended for high comp engines.

Had occasional pinging on load in Poland and Greece with 95, but I suspect that was really moonshine, went away after filling up with another brand 95.

Other than that I never experienced or even heard of issues with low quality fuel over here. Never tried anything labeled less then 95 though - but will rarely find it over here anyway.

Don't forget that the numbers displayed there aren't an even comparison.  US, Canada and a very few other places display an octane number that's an average of the RON and MON measuring methods.  If anyone ever noticed that R+M/2 on the octane sticker and wondered what it was; that's it.  The average of the RON and MON measures.  Most of the rest of the world displays the RON measure for their octane rating.

That means that for exactly the same fuel the US/Canadian number is about five lower.  100 octane in Europe is about 95 in North America.  The commonly available 89 or 91 we see here that gets made of fun by others is the same fuel they'd see roughly a 95 rating for.
