SESG2 - New grills for lowers completed
« on: June 25, 2011, 08:37:21 AM »

Been messing with the grills for the lower speakers as I'm not really thrilled with the stock design (let alone the recent fading issue). The stock emblem blocks the tweeters from my Hertz HCX-165s, and wanted a different solution.

Thought it would be pretty easy but alas - this is Mother Harley - so the speaker boxes are difficult to fit with aftermarket grills. I tried 3 different sets, and finally had to go with Focal grills. These started life as a set of Focal grills from the Polyglass line ( I think). Found them online then started the mods to them.

How do you think they turned out?

Had to create a new deflection for the CVO emblem. Took a little time to get it right.

Profile shot showing the emblem recessed into the grill:

Final shot of the new grill installed.

Appreciate any feedback ... is it too much?

CVO badges...are those standard on the 2011? I have not looked at one close yet.

Nope ... they come with just a regular Bar and Shield right in the center of the grill.
The emblems are the CVO brake caliper inserts ....  ;)

Funny - the FLHXSE and FLHXSE2 parts manuals do not show the emblems as VIN protected, but turns out they are  :(.

Really like your new grills but a question----------why didn't your just repaint the stock ones with a can of satin black spray paint? Mortons makes some in a spray can that auto paint stores sell that is really good. I painted my old bikes inner fairing with it and you can't tell it from stock stuff. A friend of mine that owns a body shop turned me on to it.

Rich, beautiful job and clever innovation to cure the blockage of the tweeters of your Hertz speakers by the center-located HD emblem of the OEM grilles.

Part number for the caliper inserts is 44935-06.
Dunno what they cost but I don't think they were all THAT expensive.

What holds the grills in?   I have just put focal speakers in but the grill mounting bases are too large to fit in the openings.  Does the grill fit right into the lower opening?  I used a dremel tool to remove the plastic from inside the Harley bar and shield.  Ill post a pic later.  Not perfect but it works.

If the speaker grilles fade I'll just get them replaced.  You would think they would put these items through some sort of environmental test.

DennisG, shoot TIF2 (Rich) a PM (include your phone #) and he can explain what he did.  I know he's very busy just now and it may take some time for him to get back to you.  IIRC, when I talked to him about the grilles, he removed the metal mesh from the OEM grilles, and installed the Focal mesh in the OEM grille rings.

I'm shopping for some grilles now, and hope to do this mod soon.

Here's what I did with mine.  I removed the plastic from inside the emblem with a Dremel Mototool.  Only problem is that there is a large hole underneath along with the small holes.  I need to paint the inside black .  I might still do what he did.  It does look good.

Not sure how it would look, but maybe you could cut out the rest of the grill behind the logo.  Especially if you decide to replace the whole grill anyway.  Would have nothing to lose at that point, and might look pretty trick.  ;D
