Are there any "reliability" issues with the new M8s?

I've got a new CVO RG Limited coming in. I'm planning to leave the 117 stock (no performance upgrades) but are there any reliability issues I need to address? For example, should I upgrade the cam plate and oil pump or are the stock pieces doing the job? Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Congrats Joe, which color did you pick?
M8wise, It sounds like they have the weak links (cam chest) taken care of. Of coarse there are many "enhancements" available so if you plan to leave your machine untouched you'll need to stay off of this site and the internet for that matter. LOL.
Do you plan on leaving the exhaust and tune stock as well?

I put 30k miles on my 2019 cvo 117 and the motor was fine. Lots of side issues with the trans, electrical, and bracket etc. Most covered under warranty.

Now have 20k miles on my rebuild at 124”, spent some time and $$$ to get the power I wanted and to make sure it lasts.

Lots of our club members have 114 and 117 bikes now and mostly stock. Oil pumps and assorted oil transfer issues have been addressed and they all seem pretty reliable.

I’ve got 50k on my bike, some have more miles and the motors seem to be running fine.

I’ve owned several M8 bikes from a 2017 CVO Limited to my current 2022 CVO RG. The only issue I had was I dropped a lifter in my 131 at 500 miles and had transfer from the transmission to the primary (19 CVO SG) both covered under warranty. Put 7,000 more trouble free miles on it before I traded for a 20 RGL.

Im on my second M8 cvo. My 2017 CVO limited ran 20k miles bonestock with slipons and another 10k miles with a 131 kit, no mechanical issues.
My 2021 CVO limited is flawless so far, plan to take it all over Co and Utah this summer.

I ordered the orange and black one. I'm doing my best to keep it stock so I can enjoy having a warranty, at least for a while.  ::)

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the exhaust yet. I'd like to get rid of the cat and the associated heat, if I can. The dealer says he can let me get away using aftermarket (Fullsac) exhaust and he says he can tune it with the SE pro street tuner and keep my warranty intact but I'm doubtful the tuner has the range necessary to do a proper tune. Has anyone here done that successfully?

Along the same lines, has anyone tried ceramic coating the stock head pipe to control heat?

I have fullsac baffles in my stock slipons and no tune was needed. Last year, I was riding 2 up on Pike's Peak in a warm July day at the base of the mountain and caught in the endless crawl to the entry gate. Saw couple of bikes pulled to the side because they had to be shut off to cool down. We just kept rolling as our engine heat on the 2021 never got like that. Now the 131 I did on the 2017 could put some heat out in the summer, probably why Im never going that route again.

Depends what you mean by "Fullsac exhaust"? If you mean headers than I did try with the Harley tuner (or the tech and the dyno tried) and it can't be done due to the limitations of the Pro Street. If you mean the slip ons then you dont even need to re tune.

I was talking header and you confirmed what I thought. Did you put fullsac cores in your mufflers? If you did, did you notice any difference in sound or on the dyno?

I am on my 3rd CVO M8.  Put just over 23K on a 2017 CVOSG, then 24K on a 18 CVORG and now 56K on a 19 CVORG.

Ran fullsac baffles on all 3, no tune required, added fullsac head pipe and tune was needed, and had to go after market.

Between 2017 and 2020 there were several changes to the oil pump.  The 2020 8 lobe oil pump solved the sumping issue which was the biggest issue for most people.  Not every early motor had the issue. 

At 21K miles when the motor was built in my 2019 we used the 2020 8 lobe Harley pump and I have ad zero issues.  This is a pretty big power build, 163 HP ands 167 Torque.

The M8 does not run quite as hot as the TC in my opinion.  The M8 seems to have the torque come on a little lower, so it feels more powerful.  I think the motor is much better than the TC.  You should not have many if any issues with the 2022 version.

That orange is going to look Fantastic.  Congratulations.

If you’re concerned about warranty and use an aftermarket tuner it will be flagged as non-Harley compliant.
Harley will void your warranty. If your dealer covers repairs that would be great!
Most new multi-store dealerships will stay in lockstep with factory guidelines.

If you “go big” like the 131” kit and stay with the factory parts,  warranty stays intact.
Power would be plenty for most with that kit.
Some of us (like Dave) opted for more and gave up the warranty and went aftermarket.
I didn’t regret that decision!

JMHO of course, it’s an individual decision all about your ultimate goal and riding style.
