Title: Some New Mods
Post by: Hoist! on January 28, 2007, 12:22:14 PM
Yesterday was rainy so I put some new things on the bike. The Chromedome Marine Grade polished alum sculpted eagle horn cover, HD fork bracket cover over the lower triple tree cover, and HD Fork Lock Cover (key requires major grindage to push down far enough to lock fork!). More to follow next week! Hoist! 8-)

Fork lock and lower fork cover. Remember the key grindage for the lock. Don't get upset, just file the key on one side, until it can be pushed down far enough to turn smoothly!

No John, they gotta go. It's been too cold and I didn't bother yet. I'll do it in my friend's shop next week.

Thanks Tony, Jerry, Scott and Jacques, they're going on one day next week with the Doherty PP and S&S A/C Teardrop cover, my favorite! I'm also doing the PC and Dynoing to 4K and installing the True-Track. The bike rides awesome. I just put another 75 miles on today. A little chilly, but not too bad. My friend picked up his new 103" Street Glide yesterday. I have some shots of that too!

A few more pics gang! ;) Hoist! 8-)

I forgot the progress report. Almost 150 miles on it now. It runs FANTASTIC!!! Anyone notice that 5th gear sounds very different than all the others? Almost a little whiney, higher pitched and not as deep as 4th or 6th. At least between 2000 and 3000 RPM, which is my whole range right now. Any thoughts or comments?

Stiil no sign of the dreaded heat. The longest spurt today at one time, was about 35 miles. After stopping, the oil temp was 209 deg F. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] It never got above 40 deg F here this afternoon and little sun. In this weather, heat is not an issue!

Ride. I said it before, you want the best handling FLH/FLT HD ever built? Put on the '07 SERK set-up. That 17" wide rear radial w/ HD Profile shocks, and the 170-18" front radial handles like no HD Touring bike I've ever ridden. And the best part, it's bone stock for this bike! Unfortunately, it's not very practical to covert your Glides, but next year they all better have this set-up! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Gas mileage. I don't have a clue! I got the bike with all the gas gage lights lit, now there are 3 lit. How much is left? Don't know. I wanted to bring the bike in next week with little fuel because I want to change the gas lines. I'm curious, but don't really care about gas mileage right now.

Comfort. They nailed the riding position on this bike. I'm 5'-9". The ride height and reach are perfect. The handlebars and controls are perfect. The Highway Pads on the Moustache Engine Guard are in a perfect location. I'm not really sure what's not perfect yet. Believe me, I'm trying real hard to find chit wrong with this bike sooner rather than later. But this thing is AWESOME!!! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Having so many RK's prior to this, and knowing I'm a die hard RK fan, I can honestly say that this bike is the Ultimate Road King. No disrespect to Elvis, but B B, you gotta the the '07 SERK suspension/geometry on Elvis or it's still missing something. Sorry bro, I hate to think what that would cost! ::)

Take care gang! Ride safe and have fun with your own mods! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Thanks Red. My buddy sold his '03 Ultra to buy an '07 RG. I tried talikng him into a CVO. He really wanted the RG. I was surprised when he told me he bought this bike. But it's set-up really nice. And they threw in the 103" upgade too. You can do what B B did to LD. You can make a real nice '07 SEEG pretty easily out of that bike! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Great mods you did on your bike! Congrats!

Nice pics of the SG.  Very nice color.  Looks very different in various light.

I wonder about something on your ride report. Why change fuel lines?  Its just not on my mods list and would like to know more.

Thanks

Hoist your mods are coming together real nice. I ordered a set of those aux light brackets and was wondering which lamps you went with? Did you do the install and relocation of turn signals yourself? Do you have the part numbers?

                  thanks woody

Hey Ruben, thanks a lot man.

I like that color too, for a red bike. ::) It's not Black though! ;D

I'm putting on the HD Braided Stainless Steel lines. They show the crossover for the Touring bikes but not the main gas line. You use the one from the Dyna. It fits. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Speaking of Braided Stainless Lines, what's up with those rubber oil cooler lines? :-? Any matching SS replacements for those? Anyone?

Also, the drain screws on the chrome lower fork legs are not chrome! :o I have the chrome replacements. Would it be OK to change them on-the-fly, putting your finger over them while quickly put the new screws in? I'm thinking that's alright. I don't need to worry about air or anything else, huh? Anyone?

Thanks Woody, I'll look up the P/N s for you, but everything's in the Touring Section of the HD catalog if you want to see pictures of everything. The aux lights are the Halogens to match the Headlight. You need to buy the Aux light mounted signals to mount there. The handlebar signals don't work. I had the dealer install the whole set-up pre-delivery. I didn't want to mess with it in the winter. How's it going with yours? ;) Hoist! 8-)

Added: Woody and anyone else interested, the parts list for the lighting and some other mods:

K&N A/F HD-0800 (approx $50); HD 53988-07 ($54.95 List) 2-up luggage rack/tour-pak detachable hardware kit; HD 69227-04A (222.44) Aux Light Bracket (from FLHXstyle for FLHR)for detachable windshields w/ HD 69228-04 ($45.62) smoked bullet turn signals, HD 69622-99B (29.90) frenched-in passing lamp trim ring, HD-68208-98A ($67.95List) halogen lamps and 69235-04 ($7.21) hardware kit; HD 69627-99 ($26.16)  frenched-in headlamp trim ring (to match passing lamps); oil temp/level dipstick; *True-Track; *HD 63698-02 ($27.42) braided S/S crossover line kit; *HD 63020-04 ($31.36) Braided SS Fuel Line; *HD 62809-06 ($21.56) fuel tank fitting cover; *S&S SPO Mufflers( approx $400) and *PCIII USB (approx $375). I will be testing it to see if the TD's will be necessary as well. If the heat's OK, I'll use the stock headpipes, If not, I'll Dyno it at 1K mi with the stock headpipes and then again with the TD's on. I'm real curious to see the difference. If the heat's OK, I'll just Dyno-tune it that way at 1K mi and leave the stock headpipes.

I hope I got these right. Doublecheck the parts catalog.

Thanks for the answer.  On the Fat Boy I have I am not really in the mood of changing something.  For a daily city cruser it looks quite good.  Although there is always something which can be improved.

My current big project is the SE Ultra which hopefully arrives in March.  I am in the process of ordering various staff for it and fuel lines was not something I had in mind before now.  So some hard thinking to do.

Will you be posting pics of your bike with the new lines once installed?

K&N A/F HD-0800 (approx $50); HD 53988-07 ($54.95 List) 2-up luggage rack/tour-pak detachable hardware kit; HD 69227-04A (222.44) Aux Light Bracket (from FLHXstyle for FLHR)for detachable windshields w/ HD 69228-04 ($45.62) smoked bullet turn signals, HD 69622-99B (29.90) [highlight]frenched-in passing lamp trim ring, HD-68208-98A ($67.95List) halogen lamps and 69235-04 ($7.21) hardware kit; HD 69627-99 ($26.16)  frenched-in headlamp trim ring (to match passing lamps); [/highlight]oil temp/level dipstick; *True-Track; *HD 63698-02 ($27.42) braided S/S crossover line kit; *HD 63020-04 ($31.36) Braided SS Fuel Line; *HD 62809-06 ($21.56) fuel tank fitting cover; *S&S SPO Mufflers( approx $400) and *PCIII USB (approx $375).

Hoist! 8-)
Howie,
Great minds think alike.  The frenched trim rings just add the right touch to those bland looking lights the MoCo puts on.  I guess it's like exhausts, they do that cuz they know those are one of the first things we're going to add/change.

You got it Red! You have to buy some type of retaining trim ring to add the Aux Light kit anyway. grc recommended them to me, so I can't take all the credit. I thought that I might as well do the headlight  at the same time. They also make something similar for the bullet TS, but I'm not sure if I'm adding trim rings to the TS yet. ;) Hoist! 8-)

Look at my turn signals and you'll see that I put them on.  That'll give you a good idea if you want to add them, as to how they look.

Red, your bike looks awesome! Looking at it, I think I like the minimalist look without them for the SERK. Things are more open on the SERK. They look great on your Glide though. Thanks Red! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Hey Gene, thanks for the info on the Tranny gears. I have my Redline ready. I'll be switching to the M1VT, RL SPH, and RL MTL when I get the other stuff done. Hopefully this week (weather sucks again!). I also figured that would quiet it down some. The pipes are supposed to be for those cagers! ::) Hoist! 8-)

Yes it did Bob, If you look close, I added 66058-01, Chrome Fork Bracket Cover under the lower fork cover. You can see the seam where it goes under the lower cover, but it covers up the rest of the open area behind the fork nicely! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Ahhh, now I see.  Just curious, why didn't you take the next step and add the chrome air baffle?  I'm thinking about doing that for the utility of it in addition to the looks.

Funny you ask. I got that also, but you cant really use all 3 pieces. The holes are blocked with the lower tree cover. So the 2 I put on will do. ;) Hoist! 8-)

Hi Howie,

Sorry it's taken me a while to add my two cents, but I've been real busy with work plus we got a new Black Labrador puppy and she is taking lots of my time too.

Congrats on the new Scoot, she looks fantastic. Sounds like you are over the moon with the performance and the handling which just makes me wish there was some news on my CACO SERK for me to look forward to !

Have you got the SPO's fitted yet ?

Catch you later.

So drill a couple of holes in the flange....   You've done Road Kings before so you know how much that baffle helps keeping the rurbulence off your front and face.

Hey Nige, nice to hear from you. Beautiful dogs, them Black Labs! Who's trainig who? ;D

Yeah, the bike is awesome. The weather's been sucky, so less than 200 miles so far. You have to read the PC vs. SERT thread. Are you aware that I'm no longer advocating or even mentioning W.....ty? I'm doing what I want to it. I didn't last 2 weeks! The SPO's and TD's are going on when I can get the bike in there-friggin winter! >:( But I'm doing the exhaust, Doherty PP wih Power Vents and S&S A/C cover, and PC or TMax w/AT! Don't worry you'l know when I do more work. I wouldn't leave you in the dark!

Hey Don, I'm thinking about doing it but I'm not sure what it will all look like. The flange holes are OK. It's the lower triple tree cover that covers everything. I was able to slip the Chrome bracket cover in. You see a seam now where the 2 covers overlap. If I drill the lower tree cover for the baffle, there'll be another seam. I'm not sure they'll all look OK together. I'm gonna play with it. I really like the lower tree cover and it came with the SERK. I snuck the bracket cover in and I don't think it's designed for both. It's not that it can't be done. I'm just not sure I'll like it. And of course I'll show you if I fit it on! I'm also hoping my new Clearview Windshield helps the turbulance too! ;) Hoist! 8-)

B B, I'm confused. I've posted pics of every mod I've done. The lower fork cover comes stock with the SERK. Take a look at the lower triple tree pic here. I added the fork bracket cover. How many pages back are the pics Dude. When Twolane posted all the stuff about his bike he kept postin the pics so we didn't have to chase around the thread looking for the visuals.

Just seeing if you're out there brother. Seems like the site has been a wee bit boring the past few days. Figured maybe I'd poke somebody and liven up the place. Had to poke someone who could poke back or I'd be gettin nasty grams from the Moderators.

Sooooooooooo if you're planning on installing some 8,10 or 12" Chubby's in the near future, this whole thing you're puttin yourself through now is gonna be wasted effort.

Actually, they're just crappy covers that I never used before. The lower cover comes stock and I wanted to see what that bracket cover looked like. I'm not sure I'm even keeping it on. The SERK also has larger, internally wired bars that are actually comfortable, albeit a little short. I'm not sure I'm changing them yet even thought I've run Dyna WG bars on all my RK's. Let me get my bike running right while I blow away my w.....ty, then I'll think about other stuff! ;) Hoist! 8-)

Well Hoist, my buddy from Tulsa is coming down to Big D  [smiley=cowboy.gif]tomorrow with my SERT and K&N element.  I"ve finally found enough dry hours to get to 500 miles so it appears a dyno run is in my future..., very near future [smiley=orange.gif].  The local dealer here charges $68 for a dyno run and tune with the SERT.  That sounds uncharactistically cheap to me.  What have the rest of you been paying?

That does sound on the low side. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] I good dyno run/tune will take several hours, and multiple runs/pull on the dyno. Going rate/hour would be $60 - $75/hr X 2 or 3 (or more) hours.

If that's what he's charging for the complete dyno, that's extremely cheap, and probably isn't a full dyno run.  On the other hand, if that's what he's charging an hour, that's not too bad.  My dealer charges $71/hour on the dyno and my dyno tune took 5 hours to do.

Howie, just looking at your pictures again.  It's not an HD part but visit J&P's catalog or some other place and find a set of chrome nipple cover thingies that cover up/dress up those ugly black toggle switches behind the headlight.  I've seen two or three different variations of covers to accomplish that at different times and they're all an improvement over the black toggles.

First things first Don. I received my PowerPacc and Power Vents this morning. Thanks to tigertr71 (TimBone) for a clean S&S Teardrop cover, which should show up this week. My V&H TD's should also be in this week. The S&S SPO's are here already. So is the True-Track. When the pipes and A/C cover arrive, I'll get the bike in for this stuff and installation of the PCIII USB. They also make a multifunction LCD display accessory hub for the PC, which allows multiple maps and map switching for let's say, performance and economy modes, or whatever maps you'd like to switch between. It also has a cool LCD display which can be programmed for different output displays. I think I'll put the PC under the right cover with the ECM, and the Aux PC unit under the left cover. I don't want it on a handlebar mount, as I don't see switching back and forth that often. This device looks pretty slick. I might not install the Aux unit until the 1K mile WOT Dyno-tune, but do plan on it. So the next report should be with this stuff installed and pics to go with them! ;) Hoist! 8)

So you finally picked one?  Is the PCIII your "final answer" after working and speaking with the dyno guy/buddy?  Or might there be different options in the future?

Final answer. That's the product he works with and is familiar with. PC is also coming out with a computer based tuning program this month to allow the computer to input the values into the cells, to cut down on the Dyno time. And that multifunction add-on allows multiple programs to reside and be switched via a button. He told me he'd install the TM, but that we'd be experimenting together. Personally, I'll use what he knows right now. That's something I'll consider down the road. Maybe when I do the cams! There'll be more time on the TM AT then too. I think this approach will be fine for now. As long as my bike runs good AFR's and runs cool, I'll be happy for now! ;) Hoist! 8)

Hoist,

Lookin' good buddy. I'm confused a bit about the economy map -vs- performance map. It sounds good from 50 feet away, but in thinking about it more, I don't get it.

I would think I'd be looking for economy, i.e. leaner running, on the slab in cruise configuration, let's say 10 - 15% throttle and 2,500 - 3,000 RPM. YMMV. Now, performance would be for more heavy-handed riding, say 40% and up throttle and 2,500 - 6,000 RPM.

My question is: When would you want a 15% throttle performance setting and when would you want a WOT economy setting? To me, the answer is never.

Am I missing something here? I'm sure Power Commander saw a need for the dual-map feature so they developed the accessory hub, but I don't see it. What am I missing?

Chief, that's just an example. It could be used for trips where you'd want a leaner program for higher altitudes or any application you can think of where you might want a second map residing, to be able to switch to. I'm not too familiar with it yet. The PC website talks about it, but I haven't researched yet. He showed it to me on Saturday and it looked interesting! I need to look into it further. ;) Hoist! 8)

The ECM, regardless of whether you run a PCIII or SERT, or nothing at all,  compensates for altitude as is.  There is no need for another MAP in that application, IMO.

I'm not really sure what a good application for this would be, other than it's a good monitoring device to see what's happening while riding as opposed to hooking a laptop up....

You've got me thinking now TC. Might be a good tool for diagnosing a problem on the road, for instance decel popping, you could load two maps, and toggle A-B to see if it gets better or worse, kind of like going to the eye doctor.

Damn! My pipes came in today and so did TimBone's S&S Air Cleaner cover I bought from him. I'm not riding in 10 deg weather just to get it tuned. I'm hoping it gets into the 20's or 30's next week and I'll get the work done. The weather's been beautiful until I got my bike! Then we get this chit! It's a conspiracy I tell ya!!! ;) Hoist! 8)

I'm aghast that you just noticed! Where you been Rog? I agree with Chip (surprise). The truth will set you free. Unfortunately it's HD's scam, not mine. I deserve a properly running motorcycle for 30 Grand! But in the end, it wasn't worth worring about. Too much stress for not enough return. Bottom line, from all my other ones before, you get it running right and it really shouldn't need w.....ty work. Minor stuff is business as usual when you own Harleys. Major problem, I'll fight with them if I have to. Right now though, getting that engine set-up right is number 1 priority! FTF, if they can't get it right, I will! ;) Hoist! 8)

I was in Las Vegas during Super Bowl for a convention which was from Friday to Tuesday and no I'm headed for Cabo on Saturday for a few days.

Most likely missed it since I was busy getting ready last week to hit the road.  Anyway, life will be much simpler not worrying about the 2 Yr Warranty.

Bro, you have my permission to use the "pumpkin" thumbs up anytime you get ready. ;) ;D In regards to that emoticon disappearing it may be due to the amount of graphics on that page. When that happens just hit the refresh button and they should all be there then (most will be cached on your machine and ones missing should appear).

PC is also coming out with a computer based tuning program this month to allow the computer to input the values into the cells, to cut down on the Dyno time. And that multifunction add-on allows multiple programs to reside and be switched via a button.

This is interesting - I was considering having an economy mode and a power mode programmed so I could download/upload off the laptop as required

Economy mode to be used when touring long distance at moderate speeds - group riding on the way to rallies etc.

Power mode for weekend hooliganism

Is there any more info available on this?

Cheers

It'll be nice to finally get back on it, but really can't wait to ride it with the mods done! With less than 200 mi, I'm not going for a full Dyno. Then an update you shall have! I just got home from the shop (9:30 PM) with the SERK. Was there since noon. Installed V&H TD's w/S&S SPO's, Doherty PowerPacc w/PowerVents w/S&S Teardrop Cover, PCIII USB w/O2 Eliminators, Braided SS Fuel and Crossover lines and The True-Track! The SPO's sound awesome!!! They have to scrape pretty bad for me to get rid of them! My friend dyno'd another SERK with V&H TD's w/V&H Ovals, so we used the map from that bike until I get more miles on mine. Then I'll give it a good WOT Dyno-tune. The bike runs and sounds fantastic as is. I still haven't had it over 3500 RPM, but you can feel it pull from 2000 RPM. Bottom end TQ feels great. Did I mention that it sounds fantastic!!! I also love the look of those big ole ugly mufflers and the S&S Teardrop cover! Now it sounds and looks like a Harley should!!!

Sorry, It's too dark for pics tonight. Plus, the bike is filthy. When I left this morning, the ice was melting and salt residue everywhere. No my new bike is a mess from the road crap! Time to see if that Glare stuff works this weekend. I'll post the pics by the end of the weekend (unless it's so nice, I don't come back!).

That's it for now. ;) Hoist! 8)

Congrats on getting this step out of the way Howie.  Know you've been biting the bit to get it done.  Nice to see weather cooperate enough to let you get at it.

Also was very interested in your first impressions of the SPOs.  Anything else you can think of to share about them?

Thanks Don. I was originally supposed to drop the bike off. I thought I'd hang out, since I didn't have a ride home anyway, and they decided to work on it anyway. One part after another, next thing you know, it's 8:30 and we're putting on the PC!

We started on the exhaust system. Stubborn bastard that stock system! The V&H's were uneventful. The bungs aren't in the greatest spots, but had no problems at all. The brake pedal is real close, but nothing had to be done. Then the mufflers. The SPO's are really heavy-duty pieces. Real quality looking and that polished SS is excellent. The inside of the mufflers needed some good clearancing inside to get them fully over the pipe. The weld is so heavy that it left a slight raise inside that we had to grind down. We got them on good though. I see why people had issues fitting them.

Then we did the A/C. That was also pretty straight forward. But there's always something. The threads on breather bolts that screw into the heads, thru the power vents, were never chased at all. They wouldn't even get started. I can't imagine how many people messed up their heads trying to mount this. We had to run these things thru a dye 3 times, not just chase them. I can't understand why these companies make such great stuff, but just miss the mark with the little BS things! Anyway, the rest of the A?C install was simple. You'll see the pics, but I gotta tell you. I'm digging the look with that S&S Slotted Hi FlowTeardrop Cover! The filter is even blue to go with the pinstriping!

Then we did the fuel lines and fuel tank hardware. I even remembered not to fill the tank beforehand!

Then we put the True-Track on. Haven't been able to test it, but didn't feel any difference whatsoever yet.

Then, when I thought we were leaving, he went into the back for fifteen minutes. He came out with the PC. He used a map that he made when he Dyno'd my friends 110" SERK. He said I'll be fine with that until I'm ready to tune mine.

We fired it up after the PC went in. It started right up. It sounded so nice. A deep low rumble. Nowhere near as quiet as stock, but quieter than any other performance muffler. It definitely sounds like a Harley and has a nice growl to it. It's classic S&S sounding, if you're familiar with them. I'm a big S&S fan myself. You can make noise with them too if you want to get on them. Overall. they're pretty much everything you want in a muffler. If the scraping isn't overly annoying. I haven't tested that yet either, as it was starting to ice up and I froze my ass of riding home in the dark with my sunglasses on!

Now to get the 1K on it so I can really get it tuned. I'll wait until S&S comes out with cams. I already have a whole list of chit to do next winter. I'm pretty well done for now. Now it's time to ride the bitch!!! ;)

That's the best epitaph to any day in the shop Howie.  Just enjoy running it.

Had to shake my head when you described cleaning out the threads on the a/c part.  That lack of attention to detail is just rampant.  It seems like everyone's concern is getting it out, not getting it out right.  And close is good enough.  I'm getting to so dread working with vendors and suppliers (especially in this market, but it's bad elsewhere as well) that can easily imagine just saying "enough is enough."  Seeing the same type of nonsense over and over (and over) again can really leave you with a "bah humbug" attitude about tackling the next chore.

Anyway....  Glad your day went well.  Sounds like you made a lot of progress and get to look forward to putting it all to work.  Spring is springing real soon.  Get ready, ride the bitch, and have some fun.

Yeah, QC is kinda non-existant these days. But at least you don't have to make the parts you need anymore. They make everything now! But bolt-on my ass!  It all usually needs some kind of adjustment. It's frustrating when you just want to do something that should take 10 minutes and you spend an hour on it. But it's all good when you get to spend the day at the shop working on the bike! ;) Hoist! 8)

Good Morning Howie, Glad to hear that you were finally able to get these last (for now) mods done. I imagine the wait was driving you and/or your nearest and dearest crazy. I received my Doherty power pacc with vents yesterday. Was going to install last night but when I got the a/c off except for the header bolts and back plate I realized I could not find any socket drives. I had to move after our last hurricane and still haven't found everything and some of my tools had not survived the flooding at my former house. Anyway after putting everything back together I read your above posts. Needless to say I got this sick feeling in my stomach and immediately pulled the header bolts I had received. Fortunately they looked ok to me but will know for sure tonight. Anyway I have a question for you if you don't mind. Did you install the hose and nipples on the power vents or just leave them off? If you installed them did you run them to the backplate or where? They give you several options and I wasn't sure what the best way would be.  Hope the weather holds out for you so you can ride this weekend. Of course it is only going to be 78 degrees here today so a little chilly for riding. lol. (As I have to work it really doesn't matter if it is 78 or 28, and as usual they are forecasting rain for the weekend.) Thanks in advance. JJ

That's it for now. ;) Hoist! 8)

Sounds great Howie - lookin forward to seein the pics.

Hey JJ, how are you? I installed the PowerVent tubing with the black plastic elbows and the clear plastic tubing they furnished. These install in the backplate and on the bottom of the PV's themselves. The clear plastic tubing attaches to the elbows and cross behind the backplate, pretty much as shown in their diagram. You can extend them directly under the frame, like the old crankcase breathers if you want. If it leaks at the A/C, I'm rerouting mine to the ground. Overall, it's a pretty simple. Have fun with it! ;) Hoist!

Hey Tony, I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I decided to do the whole system. Basically, it came down to a tuning issue. I was convinced that to get a really good tune, you need to be able to tune each cylinder separately. Since that's the case, it certainly can't hurt the heat thing either. I just dropped a map in the PC, mounted it, and rode home. It was that simple. When I get some miles on, I'll Dyno-tune it properly. But the difference was very noticable already. And I haven't taken it over 3500 RPM yet. Overall, a big improvement. ;) Hoist!

It's a very nice job and sure the Doherty A/C is a beautiful mecanical part.
With these exhausts, is it not a little bit too large ?

Thanks Jacques. You either like those mufflers or you hate them. I've not found an in between. There not only large, they're heavy too. All SS construction throughout. The look like they'll last forever. And with no chrome, they can be repolished if they get messed up! I like the looks and love the sound and performance! You can't go wrong with S&S stuff! The Doherty is a very well made piece. A few minor issues like all aftermarket parts. Same with the exhaust. The True-Track was very simple. And I just bolted on the PC with a 110" custom map my friend Dyno'd another SERK3 with, and rode away. ;) Hoist! 8)

I like the shape of these exhausts but they are more large than the saddlebegs (topic 178).
I think that it's a little too.
It's a very good material with a good finish.

Howie, I've only got two words for you: Fuel Fitting Cover  (ok, three words dammit).

Now that that little detail is out of the way:

THAT ROCKS!  Every bit of it.  Love the air cleaner.  That's a good look.  And y'know what?  Those SPO may be more proportional to the size of hard bags.  And some may not like them in this look.  But I dig it.  A LOT.  Especially with that big chrome band down low on the bags themselves.  It looks like some very large thing reached its very large arms around the whole bike and just made it all together.  That's one nice line that starts narrower at the top of the bags and just gets bigger and bigger and biggers until it ends with a hunk o' hunk o' big ol' hunk of stainless steel and attitude down there at the bottom.  Man, I even like the leather bags better with those mufflers underneath them.

Love it or hate it on your own of course.  But from the bleachers seats I'm singin' Freebird and Enjoyin' Every Minute of It!

Looking good!

I have only one comment (complaint) (observation) to make.

Love the S&S breather but line up the screws!
You know the three that hold it on.
The front two should be plumb!
You know in line in a 90 degree line up from the ground.
The back of the breather should come down
you know like this,

     .
.
     .

not like this,

      .
.
     .

Call me anal but that bothers me,,,, unless it can't be turned, then I guess it's ok.
Check out the picture you posted of your breather and see for yourself!
I'm here for you!

Thanks a lot. I'm waiting for S&S to come out with cams for the 110". I'm not taking the bike down during riding season, so it looks like next winter's work. I'm planning on cams, Feuling OP and cam plate, headwork, roller rockers and lifters, possible throttle body and injectors and maybe that cool new Freedom exhaust and TMax/AT! This is all providing this 110" doesn't self-destruct before then. It runs great and as long as they built the motor soundly, there should be no issues. I think you can use 113" barrels on a 110" without boring the cases. Does anyone know? If so, and I do the heads, I'll probably make it 113" too! I want to rack up some miles the way it is now. It's so much stronger than my 88", but you can never have too much HP! ;) Hoist! 8)

Great job on the mods...the ride looks saweeeeeet!!!  Don't sweat the weather, there's plenty of good riding weather coming up.  Now you can get that Eagle insert for your S&S A/C from Dennis....

Actually I'm not done. I still gotta get those hard bags painted. That thing will look real slick with matching hard bags. That reminds me, I haven't heard from my painter. I'll have to call this weekend and see if he came up with anything. Thanks for reminding me! ;) Hoist! 8)

Hey Red, spent some time in the garage today and while looking over everything, I made my decision. Sorry to disappoint you and Dennis. Altough I really like the flaming eagle he makes for the S&S cover, I've decided against it. I feel it's a little too much on both sides of the bike. I'm not trying to start an eagle theme or any theme, think the horn cover stands on its own, and don't want to take away from it. Thanks for reminding me about it. Just doesn't work for me now. That was a tough call. I was back and forth between the garage and the computer, and had both images on the screen as well. I kinda wanted to like it, but it didn't "do it" for me. So there you have my scientific decision making process! ;) Hoist! 8)

Chromedome, the Co. that makes the eagle horn covers like on my bike, also makes sculpted inserts for the center of the
S&S teardrop covers. You can see all their stuff on their site. The guy's name is Dennis too. We get a good discount (in Vendor Discounts- Chromedome).

Hey Howie - your scoot looks stunning. It's a credit to you and shows what a lot of time, effort and research can result in.

I am thinking about sending you my new CACO SERK when it arrives so that you can do the mods on it ! Ever thought of setting up a CVO modifying business ?  ;D

I've kind of backed off making any more decisions on what I am going to do with my scoot until I have a firm delivery date. Then I can start ordering with a purpose.

Hope the good weather comes soon.

Cheers,

Hey Nige, thanks a lot. I did the research and determined the parts I wanted to use, but I didn't do all the wrenching. Had the performance mods done at my buddy's shop. Getting the hard bags I have, painted to match is my next project.

You must be going nuts waiting on yours. I know that by the time you get it, you'll know exactly what you'll want to do to it, flappers and all! In the meantime, you get to see what works and what doesn't, what looks good or not, all right here. This site has got it's chit together! Stay patient, you'll love the bike! If I can assist you or advise you in any way, let me know. Thanks again Nige.

Well, this is as good a place as any for No. 2500. Today was such a beautiful day. I got to spend about five hours on and off the bike and racked up another 175 mi. Rode around Long Island. Made various stops along the way. Bringing the revs up and down, riding awhile, and stopping to let the bike cool off. Not that it's hot at all, never got over 207 deg. It's just how I like to break it in. The bike ran like a dream. The sound is phenomenal. Those SPO's sound perfect! You really hear that nice stroker growl when you back off the throttle at 4 grand. That's as far as I pushed it and only just a little. Throttle respone from about 2700 and up is really nice. This bike wants to cruise at 80-100 in 6th. This is my trip bike, and the gearing couldn't be better. Took it to almost 100 and only hit hit 4 grand. This thing is sweet!!!

Anyway, during my 30-45 min legs, I got to thinking about the bike and how I got it this way. How I knew exactly what to do to it, even before I got it. That led me to thinking about this site and the people here. How lucky I was to have stumbled upon this site at the end of last October. It captured me at first because I saw people who actually knew what they were talking about technically, and helped each other too. I then saw the community that exists here. Not a bunch of strangers sharing something in common. But a real sense of family and community. Sharing good times and bad times. Consoling each other in sorrowful times. Celebrating and encouraging each other. As well as fighting and torturing each other sometimes. Mom and Pop (mods) to keep the children in line. Everything a real family goes through. And much more than a lot of families will ever get to experience. And I understand how fortunate I am to be a part of this. It truly gives one hope, that a bunch of total strangers can get together on their computers and become a caring, genuine, compassionate, sharing family. I know how rare that is with people you know, let alone with strangers! And I hope Neal realizes how incredible it is that his creation developed into this. It's got to be more than he could have ever imagined.

Thank you all for letting me share my thoughts, my time, my sarcasm, my humor, my technical help as I can. And most of all, thank you for doing the same with me and allowing me to be a part of this unbelievable family!!!

Sounds like things are coming together.  Glad everything's working out and you're getting some time on the SERK.  Mine consisted of getting the road grime, salt, sand, etc., off the  '03 and a short hop around the neighborhood.

Hey Howie - nice post for your 2500th.

I think your sentiments capture the essence of the CVO Forum extremely well. I too never thought that such a site could exist. The amount of information on here and the manner in which folk are willing to jump in and help is fantastic.

I know I am a long way away across the pond, but I'd like to think that some day I'll get to meet a few of the folks that live and breath their Harley passion through this site.

Later.

No problem at all Phase. I was hoping this thread would help give you guys some idea of what the mods I did, look like. I'm glad it helped. And thanks for the compliment on my bike. I love that thing and it does run pretty nice. I can't wait for some more miles and get it Dyno'd based on my mods. I haven't checked, but based on yesterday's riding, I think I'm getting pretty good gas mileage right now too. But it hasn't been over 4000 RPM yet! ;) Hoist! 8)

Hi Howie - I'm sure you must have mentioned this a thousand times before, but is that the Clearview screen on your scoot ? Is it the clear or the grey tint and presumably it is the one without the recurve.

At 6'0" I reckon I should go with the standard height screen as I don't want to be looking through the screen.

So that would be the HAR-RKD00 19.5"L

Thanks for that Rjob - I knew it would be there somewhere, just couldn't think where.

The screen looks good and I have to say that the recurve looks less pronounced than it does on the Clearview site (a good thing in MHO).

No one over here seems to have heard of these screens, but you guys seem to swear by them.

A trip over the pond is looking more and more likely to me as I have a number of items I want to buy and your prices are about half of what they are over here.

Thanks again.

Thanks Rog, I only have a few minutes this afternoon to catch up. You saved me a few extrs minutes now. Nige, I switched the Lexan from my HD 5-hole windshield with the Clearview. The weather here crashed again. 9 deg yesterday, 12 deg and snow today. So it's safe to assume that I haven't road-tested it yet. I ordered the 18" tall (1" over Clearview standard size). Based on that, with the recurve it has to be better. It also has a very lite grey tint instead of the clear HD 18" (mid-low) windshield. I'll let you know what I think when I get back on the bike. I'm now in the process of determining which handlebars to go with. there's always something I guess! ;) Hoist! 8)

Hi Howie - I called in at my Dealers today and ordered most of the OCD stuff. They agreed to supply about $2,000 worth of stuff as part of the trade in deal so I've been filling my boots with bits and pieces to cover that.

I still have the major stuff to buy - Doherty PP, PCIII, V & H Oval slip ons, Image Jiffy stand, Kuryakyn Iso Wings, TT (maybe) and last , but by no means least that cracking eagles head horn cover from Chromedome. By my reckoning that little lot will set me back about $1,600.00 if I buy it from the States, but probably nearly double that if I buy them here. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that it would be a good idea to jump a flight to NY - buy the kit - and carry it back over here.

Whadya think ?

Hey Rog - that sure would be a blast, but I'm hoping that my bike will be here sooner rather than later and I need the parts for when it arrives.

I'm definitely coming over next year and will hopefully be bringing my CACO SERK with me. We are planning a 5 week trip taking in Sturgis and then heading south then east then North and finally ending up in Milwaukee.

Hope we can share a few CVO cold ones then and we can have a group shot of USA and UK bikes together.

That's a very generous offer Howie and I really appreciate it.

The only thing that concerns me with the mailing is the import tax, which is probably another $30.00 on top of every $100.00 that I spend. The dealers/manufacturers won't send the goods marked as gifts (for obvious reasons) and if you bought it and sent it as a low value gift then I would lose out big style if the parts got damaged or lost.

If I come over then I would bring the good lady and we would have two big suitcases, one of which could be used for the parts and we could then just carry them back in. At least that way I know they would be safe.

Not sure if there is an easy answer to this one. I think I'll make a few enquiries on the import tax issue.

Cheers,

Nige

Nige, I don't know anything about the import issues but why can't something be sent insured  to take care of your damage concerns  and marked any way it needed to be - ie low value gift that you mention above? Anyway if it would help to receive the parts from more than one source I don't mind helping out. Good luck and just let me know if I can help. JJ

Howie - JJ - Thanks for the offer guys, I might just take you up on them when I have done a bit more research.

The issue with the insurance would be say insuring a PCIII for $380.00 and then sending it as a low value gift, I have a feeling that someone might smell a rat on something like this  :o

I know a few folk over here that have ordered parts from the USA so I'll have a word with them first.

Might be an idea if you both open an offshore account in the Caymen Islands so that we can start shipping a few $ around  :nervous:

You're still liable for duty (around 10%) and VAT at 17½% on the stuff when you carry it in yourself, Nige.  If you declare it of course, or if they decide they want to check in any case....

Having said which, I went over myself in '03 with a couple of big cases, filled them with $3000 of HD parts, and flew straight back.  Cases were checked by Customs, and they never said a word.....

I get my stuff all sent over by post these days, from Zanotti in Pennsylvania.  Even after you've paid Duty, VAT, and the ParcelFarce clearing fee, you are still a lot cheaper than  buying here.

Example:  Today I priced V&H Dresser Duals at our local dealer.   £300 + VAT = £352.50.    Price from Zanotti is $338.47 (you can get them cheaper, but Zanotti is easy to deal with and reliable.) So that = about £175.00. Let's err on the high side, and guess shipping at $100 or say £50.  that's £225.00  10% duty say, £247.50, add VAT and the total is £290.00 a saving of over £60!

Now, that's a bad-case scenario, because the shipping is so high; on smaller parts, where shipping might be $30, the saving is greater.

Wouldn't the duty be roughly the same or less than a airline ticket?  Unless you are using miles or need them, seems post would be a good idea.

Hi Jim - your figures are plum on what I would expect for tax and VAT - about £30.00 in every £100.00. I have list of about $1,600.00 worth of stuff that I want and I reckon that will cost me about £1,300.00 over here. The sums still tell me that I should send to the USA for them and maybe even get Howie or JJ to buy them for me and ship them over.

The one slight worry that I have is that I have been told that the USA Power Commander III is slightly different to the one we get over here and that any warranty will be voided if I use an imported one.

The rest of the stuff is just bolt on accessories, so no problem with that.

Wouldn't the duty be roughly the same or less than a airline ticket?  Unless you are using miles or need them, seems post would be a good idea.

Hey JJ - with all the stuff I need I reckon I would save around £800.00/$1500.00. This would give me and the good lady a weekend in New York for FREE - if ya get my gist.

I think I might just be looking for an excuse to go see Howie's bike  ::)

Airline ticket or not, the duty and VAT (sales tax, ours is national) are still supposed to be paid, so the comparison has to be the cost of mailing the stuff from the US versus the plane ticket, RJ.

Good afternoon Nige,

In my case when I buy parts in States, I ask the shipping with USPS.
When the total amount of the parcel is less than 500/600, the custom declaration is not made when it arrive in FRANCE. (I wrote not the currency because they look only the numbers and not the currency)
It's not possible with UPS or DHL.
If the total amount is more this limit, I ask to receive my order in two parcels.

It means if I buy a part for 100$ plus shipping cost and the european price in euros will be 200 euros, I'm always winner.
I agree with Jim, the shipping cost is expensive but it's always interesting for me.

Can't see how it would be different, Nige.  I used one on my 06 bike that I got from the US.  In fact it's sitting here ready to go on ebay! :-)   It was identical, and DynoJet UK happily put the RevXtend feature on it for me when it was new.  They are really nice folks, and I can't see them arguing about warranty, but if they did - well post it back to the US!

Jim

PS:  Your mates are still describing some concoction called Scotch "whiskey"!  :drink:

Other way, if you pay the taxes :

You ask to a friend in States to buy your parts.
You ask him to unpack these and send as used parts for a value of half price.
Of course, no bills in the parcel. All documents that you need for mounting : notices and so on in other letter by post mail.

That sounds fair enough to me Jim - I thought the guy I spoke too was probably just putting a bit of a sales pitch together so he could have the business. He quoted me £275.00 shipped as against $370.00 in the USA plus shipping, tax and VAT whiuch I guess would add about another $130.00, unless I can get away with Jacques suggestion of USPS. So possiblt not a huge saving to be made.

I've told them about the "Whiskey" but I don't think their web designer has remembered. Sacriledge Jim, that's what it is.

I had a package delivered by USPS today, in fact, Jacques.   I normally get things sent by Global Priority Mail - it's slightly cheaper than ordinary Airmail, and is supposed to be quicker. But this package (my J&M antennæ, quick release braided fuel line, some ball end allen sockets) was posted on 17th February. 19 days!!  In contrast the same friend posted me a package by ordinary airmail on 24th February, and it arrived on 1st March!!!  GPM used to be 3-5 days, but I think that what's happening now is that because the £ is strong against the $, lots of people are having stuff sent from the US, and UK Customs have realised that there is money to be made, so are causing big backlogs.   Previously, you would only be charged duty and VAT about 1 time in 5, and now it's 9 times in 10....

Incidentally, in the UK (and I expect France too) - anything costing over £18 (around €27) is liable for Duty and VAT, except if it's a gift, when the figure is £36 (around €54).  Fair enough. But what I think is NOT fair, is how they add the postage to the value and charge Duty and VAT on it too!!  >:(

The we have to pay £12.50 (around €19) to the post office as a "clearance fee".  If your shipment comes in two packages, then they charge TWO clearance fees...

Yup!  But if you think about it, it's even worse!  First they add the Duty (Import tax) then they add the VAT (sales Tax) so we are taxed on the tax on the postage too!   :(

Gas - petrol as we call it - is the same here.  First they add the Duty, then they add the tax, so again, we pay tax on the tax.

Had realized that cute little trick Jim.  That seems to be almost universal though.  Some poor schmo in his little store sells something.  It got to him through customs, all fees built in before he puts it in inventory.  He hangs a price tag on it.  And we pay sales tax/VAT/whatever based on the final tab.  There are a lot of taxes on taxes out there if you look for them.  But tax on consigned postage; man....  that was a new one.  You just know that some bureaucrat somewhere got a big bonus for thinking up that one.

It's same in France, we pay taxe on Import taxe +VAT and on the postage.

Perhaps, we don't write that because the US political people had not think that !
It's only in Europe  :-[

That's not strictly true Jim - we do get a concession for buying stuff at the Duty Free stores in the airports - as long as we are travelling outside of the EU.

Trouble is I can never find a shop that sells Harley parts  :'(

When do you call spring Howie ? Over here it's just starting to kick in, but the consistent warmer weather will still take about another three or four weeks to get here.

She's the sort of girl who will sit on the pillion with rain and wind blowing her to bits with me whinging on about the conditions and then say " Hey c'mon Nige we're together and we're on our holidays, what could be better" Guess I'm a lucky guy !

Hey Nige, it'll start getinng nice here by the end of the month usually. By April, it's starting to get nice all the time, but could be a little rainy. I wouldn't worry about that. You're probably used to that! And by May, you don't have to worry. So if you're serious, I'd try to plan end of April, early May so you're assured the weather will be halfway decent!. I'm closer to LGA, but you'll probably have to fly into JFK. Let me know you plans, and I'll srrange some time off. Hoist! 8)

Sounds like a plan coming together Howie.

I'm off to the Bahamas for 17 days at the end of April, returning on the 15th May. This is a Bonefishing holiday with 5 buddies and I have to say that it's as much fun as ridin my scoot. If we manage to get it together it will probably have to be a long weekend at the end of May as we leave on the 13th June for our 17 day trip to the European HOG Rally in Spain (it's a hard life, but someone has to do it).

If we can't squeeze it in there it will have to be July or August - do you have any rallies/events that we could tie up with around that time ?

This is fun, I just love planning vacations  8) 8) 8)

Next phase of mods!  I was out today for about 100 miles. This bike runs great!!! I can't imagine how good it will be when I can take it over 3500 RPM. I'll have 500 miles by the weekend and am changing all the fluids. I'm putting the good chit in. M1 V Twin (eng), Redline Shockproof Heavy (trans), and Redline MTL  (primary). I'm putting on the SS Oil Cooler Hoses. I'm ordering Wild 1 Chubby Bars WO515, 10" Apes. I needed new risers, Hyd. Lines, throttle/idle cables and need to extend the wiring. After seeing Mikey's bike in pieces, I decided to let my friends shop handle this. I also had him order the Kury floorboard extensions. He ordered the parts. I should get the fluids, SS Oil cooler lines and FB extensions done this weekend. The bars should be in for the following weekend. With any luck, the bike will be set-up perfectly for me by the trip to York!

I gotta tell you, this bike flies! You don't feel the weight at all. I haven't taken it over 3500 RPM, but you're doing 100 at 3500 in 6th! This bike wants to cruise at 100. The 88" could barely do 100 in stock form! It couldn't get out of its own way. This thing seems as fast as my hot rod '85 FXWG. At 150-200 lbs heavier, that's pretty impressive. It's still not as fast as my Pro Street, but next year with compression, headwork and cams, who knows!!!

More pics next weekend! ;) Hoist! 8)

Sounds like that CVO fever has no bounds Howie. I wish you would stop listing all this stuff as I just have to start searching around to see what you are getting and then BOOM, more money is winging it's way to the lucky manufacturers. I keep thinking I should post a thread with the list of add on and mods for my bike, but it seems a little churlish when the F****n thing still ain't in sight yet.

Still tryin to figure that one out Howie. It's going to cost me £620.00 ($1100.00) to fly across the pond and then I have to find me a hotel, food and copious quantities of Bourbon while I'm there. Reckoning on about £1500.00 ($3,000.00) for a 3 night weekend. Now I have to say that it's my 50th birthday in June and Jan is all up for paying for the trip to NY, but if she does that then she won't be spending the money on my OCD habit ! Nigel, as proud of you may be of the pile of parts waiting in pre-bike trim you're probably just a piker on comparison.  Could be mistaken.  But I think JR is still the World Champion of pre-bike adornment.  There was damn near another bike waiting for that bike when it finally arrived.  And the boy still hasn't stopped.  JR was a sick sick man.  I'm just glad I'm a lot more practical about this stuff.

Hey Hoist - Good job on the scoot. I just read this thread from start to finish and enjoyed the heck out of it - amazing to see how this site "family" interacts around the globe. Plus I just figured out a possible european motorcycle vacation - I'll just ship myself and bike overseas and ride. I'll sell off parts and goodies all trip long til she's back in stock form, then sell the bike, then come home with a good nut in my pocket for that 08 SERG ;D

Hey ceej, thanks man! Nah, keep the SEEG too. Them parts are so expensive over there, you could buy the SERG by selling only the mods! ::) Hoist! 8)

More pics next weekend! ;) Hoist! 8)

Let's hope for good weather this weekend. The Wild 1's are in! 10AM Saturday! Handlebars, SS oil cooler hoses, FB Extensions, and all Fluids! I hope he has the right length cables and lines in stock, otherwise, I'll have to leave my bike there and order what's needed. We won't know what we need until it's mocked up. :nixweiss:

The passenger Floorboards are back ordered, so the whole highway peg-passenger FB thing, will have to wait a little. You guys made me feel so bad about my chrome apathy, that I treated my bike to a chrome goody too - HD Chrome Rear Master Cylinder. Woo Hoo! Chrome! ::)

So you don't need this  :worthless:  I know the drill! ;)

I'm trying not to try too hard and will be happy if I remain a Piker (what does that mean anyway ?). Original intention was just to buy a scoot that needed nothing doing to it and then ride the bejusus out of it - fat chance with you lot !

Needs nothing doing to it Nige? HaHaHaHaHa!

Crap, crap, crap!!! My buddy's shop was way too busy today to do the handlebars. Got there at 9, waited til 11:30 and blew it off to ride instead! I'll try again on Thurs. A little over 400 mi. now. Starting to spit and decel pop a little now. So, I'm going try to get a bunch of miles on this week and throw it on the Dyno. The map we used was from another bike's Dynotune. Close enough for some break-in miles, but no Cigar! I'll probably go on Thurs to do the handlebars, fluids, Dyno, Kury FB extension, and hopefully my Zanotti order (passenger floorboards) will be here by then for mounting. So , I guess I'll have to suffer with riding this weekend instead! ::)

Hey Howie,

Sounds like the misfortune of not getting your bars fitted turned into some real fun after all.

I guess by now you'll be close to that Dyno, I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

I found some info. out this weekend about the intake solenoid eliminator I need and the exhaust actuator eliminator so team them up with the Dynojet O2 eliminators, the PC and the Docherty PP and I should be good to go.

Nige

P.S. Stilll working on the trip thing. Jan is keen so it's still a possibility.

Good deal Nige. It sounds like you're set with your flapper elims. and you'll be able to get the bike setup properly.

Yeah, I was bummed a little because I really dislike those Schwinn SERK handlebars! There's close to 500 miles on her now. If I can get it done this week, I'll change the fluids and get it Dyno'd. I'm not gonna wait til the 1K mark. Why wait! I'll let you guys know how it went when I'm done!

Glad you're still thinking about coming here. Let me know when you decide, and also, let me know if you need any parts lined up that you plan on bringing/shipping back home.

That's the right attitude !!

Hey man, I finally played phone messages this morning that came in while I was gone.  Sorry I missed you.  You've seen the description of what it feels like so that part is covered.  Will still call sometime sooner rather than later to catch up a bit.

After the red bike gets cleaned up from the trip I'll take a pic to show the new legs installed too.  They don't look too bad.  And that Adjure flush mount axle really cleans up the front lines.  It's so easy to put on you should be getting one of those like yesterday.

Good luck on the bars install.  Hope they fit you perfectly.  It can make so much difference getting stuff like that tweaked in to the rider.  That's going to be a very special black SERK I'm looking forward to spinning around Hot Springs on.  I promise though, I'll ride slooooooow  ???  (just ask TC's V-Rod) .

Hey Don, I'm glad you had an enjoyable, successful trip! It sounds like these guys really got their act together at Traxxion. Can't wait for mine. I'm also hoping that they have those Italian Dual Shocks ready by Sept. I'd be leaving NYC on one bike, and pulling into HS on a completely different one. Big difference from your original RK report, to the one you and Terry just made.

I held the bars up to the bike while I was hanging around Sat. They should be perfect. The 12's are too tall and the 8's too short. They 10.5's are just right. Like the 3 bears! :D

BTW, don't worry about going slow, as it was not built to go slow! I'm really looking forward to this riding season and just hope I don't wind up gettinmg locked up while having fun with my new Hot Rod SERK! ;)

Jan's away on holiday in Fuerteventura at the moment, but she is back again on Wednesday. We'll make a decision then.

If we are coming then I think I'm probably going to want to bring back the Doherty PP, Clearview Shield (which I'll need to order and get shipped to you pretty soon), V & H Slip Ons (could be a carrying problem), Image - Eagle Claw Jiffy Stand and maybe a True Track. Don't think I will bring back a PC III as I believe there is a warranty issue for imported ones.

Cheers,

Nige

OK, the next step is here. Getting rid of the Schwinn Bars! I'm going to the shop today to leave the bike til Sat. :( I'm putting on the Wild 1 10" mini-apes. We'll see what if anything, needs to be done to the cables, wiring, and lines. While it's there, changing the fluids- M1VT crank, Redline SP Heavy trans, Redline MTL primary. Also putting on the Kury rider FB extensions and chrome rear master cyl. This should complete the mods needed to get the initial set up correct. Dyno tune before York trip. Then enjoy it over the summer.

Fall brings Traxxion suspension upgrades and Winter brings engine improvements and upgrades. Can you tell I'm having fun! ;D Hoist! 8)

Went to the shop a few this morning to see the progress. The bars are installed in the new risers and he set up the orientation of the bars with me on it. These bars are a perfect height. The stock throttle/idle cables and brakeline are fine. The clutch line might have to be replaced. The wiring needed to be extended. The biggest issue seems to be the risers. You need to replace the stock risers, as the 1.25" HD bars are 1.25" all the way thru the clamp area. The Wild 1's 1.25" bars are reduced to 1" at the clamp are so they can be used on stock bikes. The risers/clamp for this are too tall (1" risers) to fit under the SERK riser cover. He has to machine down 1/2"-3/4" from the risers for everything to fit under the cover. I never heard this before. My friend has a full service shop with a full machine shop. No big deal for him. But I would have been stuck if I tried this myself. He tells me that he's using the shortest risers and wasn't concerned by it, but seemed surprised that everthing didn't fit properly. Anyone else go thru this? I also used the Urethane riser bushings for this install.

Other than that, it's going smooth. They're gonna button it back up today/tomorrow and do the fluids for me while they have it. They're also putting on the chrome rear master cylinder. By tomorrow I should have a real motorcycle with real handlebars! Can't wait! Next post should be on completion with the pics for you guys!

Thanks guys. I have 1 more Big Brown Truck coming with some secret, stealth, behind the saddlebag goodies, and every sensor for the FI system for back-up, JIC!

The bike's almost ready. So far I got away with the stock hyd clutch line (just makes it; maybe a touch tight), and the stock throttle/idle cables. He extended the wiring as necessary, and cut down the risers. If the front brake line also makes it, I'll have it late today. If not, he'll have to order that line, and I'll have to wait til Tuesday. I'm hoping it makes it. I seem to have found the handlebar limit with the stock stuff, and that's 10" apes. Any longer, you're definitely replacing everything. With any luck, I'll be picking it up later.

After this, there'll only be time for riding it. No more work on it until Sept! ;)

As far as any more mods for my scoot, JesterDEcor says NO. I need to come up for some way to make her think New Zipper's cams are a safety modification. Hmmm, I could have my dealer write the invoce as LED lights? $1,500-$2,000? Yea, that should work.

Well, it needed a new upper brake line and tee. The tee doesn't accommodate the lower fork cover. Oh well! I think I read of that from someone else, because I wasn't totally surprised. What was alarming was the broken Tooth from the Starter Ring Gear found attached to the magnetic Primary drain plug! Only took 500 miles for that one! Anyone know any fixes to the POS spring-loaded, banging compensator's we have? i told him to put the Syn 3 in, in case I bring it in to have the dealer fix it under W.....ty! I'd rather have a better fix for it than putting it back to stock. Might cost some $$ but I'd rather make things bulletproof while it's apart. Any advice? Hoist! 8)

HB,
I put my foot down right after I got her a leather recliner sofa and loveseat, all new end tables, coffee table, matching lamps and getting ready to pay for renovating the kitchen...funny thing is, my foot doesn't hurt at all from putting it down so hard...just the spot on my a$$ where my wallet usually is.  I knew that getting a new HD would cost me more than the initial bike, but I thought that meant extra parts FOR the bike. :-*  Actually she's treated me right for 33 years now...I definitely can't complain. ;)

I have the same oil/temp dip stick on my ultra and the screen to read is always turned sideways, I noticed yours is horizontal.  I have tried dozens of was get my screen horizontal but if I want it tight it is turned sideways.  A friend of my with a new scream-in Eagle Road King just had one put on and his is the same way as mine.

I am sure there is a simple solution but I am to stupid to figure it out.

If you take the dip stick out and set it face down on a piece of cloth, you'll see 4 or 5 (can't remember exactly) screws holding the face of the dip stick to the body.  Take those screws out and then pull the two pieces away from each other.  (Be careful, don't pull to hard or far or you could break the thin wires running from the LCD to the sensor body.)  Turn the cap to the nearest position where you think it will be close to horizontal as possible when you've got it tightened in the bike, then put the screws back in.  Take it out, put it back in, and see how you did.  It took me two tries.  Mine is not perfectly horizontal, but it's close.

By the way, welcome to the site.  You might want to go over to the New Member section and introduce yourself and provide a pic of your ride.

Mods, new mods! Did you do any this year Don? ::)

Handlebars are on. Cables and clutch line was long enough. Wires needed extending and the front brakeline needed replacement with a longer one. HD uses a brake tee instead of 1 piece brakeline when you need a longer one. The stock chrome cover doesn't fit anymore. Who cares, it's just a chrome cover! The rear chrome master is on too.

No your not getting pics right now. I picked the bike up and brought it straight to the dealer to get the broken Primary junk fixed. I'm expecting it back before York. At least when I get it back, I should have some improvements. Chrome inner primary and starter! Speedo's acting up and will also probably be replaced.

I'll let you know how things go and get pics when I get it back!

Howie,
I trust the primary issues are being covered by the MoCo?  Do they consider the starter as part of the problem?  (Should defray some of the cost of that chrome starter  ;)).  Hope everything works out.

Yeah Tony, the tech told me that the starter is one piece and if the pinion gear is broken the whole starter gets replaced under w.....ty. I'll have to pay the difference between the black and chrome, and the chrome inner primary. No labor-covered under w.....ty. Speedo will be under w.....ty too! Like I said, hopefully you'll be seeing it in York. I'm looking forward to meeting you and seeing your new bike also! Hoist! 8)

Devil, it is using the factory parts.  And to say it's difficult would be an overstatement.  However....  it's not a quick task at all.

Will do an install thread once it's all done.  It's just not quite there yet.

The short and skinny on it would be this:

Surprisingly few part numbers necessary.  Everything inside the saddlebag comes as a kit part number.  The only other parts are the various terminal connectors and plugs you'll need, the switch itself, two relays and a bi-directional diode.

This would be a dead bang simple thing to do if Harley also made the harness for it available.  They don't.  Apparently, even though the harness pretty much stands alone, it's wrapped in the same wire shield as the main harness on the SEUC's.  So no separate part number for it.  So you have to make your own.

Even that isn't too bad a chore.  It's not a complicated harness.  It would have been more straighforward if they'd carried three legs to each saddlebag for lock/unlock/ground but they only carried two.  Both relays are diode protected internally and you have to add a bidirectional diode that goes between the two leads that go rear to the saddlebags.  Those two leads end up swapping positions for lock or unlock and ground found fuctions.

It's an odd way of accomplishing what could have been simpler (at least to me).  But it works.  Mounting the lock hardware inside the saddlebags is a bit of a jigsaw puzzle the first time.  But not terribly so.

I've got the hardware in the saddlebags, the harness roughed together and the entire mess bench tested.  Have seen it work.  Now just have to make the final version of the harness tidied up and to fit the bike then shove it all together.  Then just put the fairing and gas tank back on.  It's one of those "whole weekend chores" when you do it the first time that would take less than half that time if you did it again.

When all done I'll list the parts needed and some more detailed descriptions that match some photos.  Didn't have all weekend to work on it this past weekend as was doing some other things to the bike and had some outside chores to contend with.  If the world doesn't intrude, however, I'm hoping to be relatively uninterrupted and finish it up tomorrow.

Howie, Are you saying that dealer is charging you labor for installation of the new  starter and the new speedo which are only being replaced because the original ones were defective?  "....will repair or replace without charge any parts found under normal use to be defective in factory materials or workmanship." p. 159 of owner's manual. Also, I don't see labor listed under exclulsions on p. 160 . ??  JJ

No problem, just trying to look out for you in the areas that I do know something about. Also was sorry to hear about the problems with your bike. I know that it had to be a real heartbreaker with all the passion you have for hd and your new bike. On the bright side, it was a good excuse to feed your newly acquired OCD. Best of luck, JJ.

Thanks jj, but it's still a Harley and chit breaks. Maybe that should be less uncommon with a new bike, but I sure am used to it. My concern is that it gets fixed properly. My work does not normally get done by these folks, although I know them well. With any luck, it'll be better than new! ;) Hoist! 8)

Thanks Freja. You make a good straight man, as I can now lead into the newest mods! As most of you know, I had a problem with the clutch shell starter ring gear and starter. So the following shows the latest mods I've done. What follows here is Wild1 Chubby WO515 10" Mini Apes Handlebars (wiring extension and brakeline replacement was required), Chrome Rear Master Cylinder, Chrome Inner Primary, Chrome Starter. What remains cosmetically is the Hard Saddlebags, Roadwinder wheel-matching Floating Rear Rotor, and Chrome Belt Pulley Cover (they don't make a Roadwinder Pulley for the Touring Bikes!). These pics show the way the bike looks as of today. I hope you enjoy them! Hoist! 8)

I knew you'd dig the Bling d00d! If this stuff wasn't apart, you know I wouldn't have done it. $525 for a new chrome starter and $269 for a Chrome Inner Primary. Probably about 6-8 hours labor. But because of the W.....ty work, I only had 1 hour labor and the Chrome Inner, plus some gaskets and tax, around $500 total. It would have been around $1500-$1600 normally. That's based on list for the parts. They didn't give me a discount on this stuff though! ;) Hoist! 8)

Thanks Terry. Things seem to always happen for a reason. My preference would have been nothing breaking. But there was a silver lining to this breakdown. Except for not having my CVO on the CVO Tour Trip, this seemed to work out for the best. And BTW, I saw the job you did after I got home. Man, your bike really looks awesome. Hey John, thanks a lot. The bike had just under 500 miles on it. No way of knowing when it broke, as it was starting OK, and no weird noises. I changed my Primary Oil (with the other fluids too) at about the 500 mi. mark. One of the teeth was stuck on the magnetic drain plug. That's how we caught it. There should be no issues with bikes built after Feb, '07. It's the early ones to keep an eye on. You should be fine. How're liking the new bike? Best of luck with it John! Take care. Hoist! 8)

Thanks Don. They are absolutely perfect. I've run Chrome Dyna Wide Glide Bars on all my previous RK's. I use Flanders Street Bars on 6" Risers on my 4-speed. This is the riding position I'm used to. I feel like I'm riding a motorcycle again, not a Schwinn! The difference with bars like this is on slow, tight turns you have to muscle it a little more. But you get used to it. As for riding position, there's nothing better. For me, anyway! These bars have my hands just below my shoulders and when I close my eyes and reach out, my hands go right to the grips! Perfect!!! Hoist!

That sounds great Howie.  It's a lot of being what we're used to.  The muscles get trained to be in spot.  On my Road Kings before I'd never done apes.  But always did a bar from Flanders that "cruised" for me.  On the SEEG I was lucky that the 575 bar put me back in an almost identical position.  Like you said buddy, just what I used to.

(Can't wait til Hot Springs and riding me a SERK !!)

Howie,
Glad you got her back!  Everything looks great.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to "break" the internals so I can get "free labor" and replace black stuff with shiny stuff (right Gary?), while I can't ride  :(...
Enjoy friend.  Really sad you had all the problems, but fortunate that stuff was still covered under the you know what.
Get some time in the seat and let us know how she's doing.
So, when you going to paint the a$$-end of those SPO's???

Hey Don, you won't be trying a SERK3 then, it'll be a Hot Rodded version of HD's Hot Rod SERK! ::) But since you have a Hot Rodded SEEG, you should feel right at home!

Hey Tony, thanks a lot. Now don't go breaking something, just to get the shiny stuff. Bad Karma man! But when it does happen, it gives you options. Nothing like free labor to put parts on that you wanted anyway! You're bike was built after they found and fixed the Ring Gear hardening issues. So don't count on it breaking. I wish mine didn't break, but everything worked out for the best. And yes you're right, I have to pick up some Black Stove Paint and take care of those baffle ends.

Be careful with the EFI cover. On some installs it will hit against the bottom of the tank when the engine vibrates. I have been using a rubber bumper on them now....

Do you remember if this was happening more  w/the original or the "A" version of this part. I noticed that it's in second round of production/modification.

The bike's back in the shop for my latest round of upgrades. Rear Roadwinder Floating Rotor w/Chrome Hardware, Chrome Pulley Cover (yeah cover! ;D), Chrome Rear Axle Spacers, fine tuning of handlebars and controls w/ solid clamp for W1's Chubbys, clearancing of Brake Pedal (yeah, the V&H TD's hit the pedal and clearancing itself now!). Most importantly, it's in for Dyno Tuning! I'll save the Chrome Bad as Hell Fork Clamp and the Chrome Fork Drain Screws for Traxxion to install when they do the AK-20 Cartridge Forks on the 15th in Atlanta. Looks like the Sta-Bo's will wait until after the trip. I should be picking it up on Thurs. I'll definitely be travelling with my old RK Touring Bucket and matching passenger backrest! This seat is definitely not for long trips. My wife is my driver backrest. Will probably be looking at Corbins when I return. And lastly, the stock SERK saddlebags are completely useless. I can barely fit my raingear and my leather in one bag. Don't know how I'm gonna squeeze everything we need for this trip, but we'll manage. Those hard bags can't be done soon enough! I'll try to get some pics up before I leave. If not, those I meet on the trip will get to see the stuff first. Stay tuned for the latest! Hoist! 8)

Oh, one other thing. That Puzzled's a great guy! He's sending me the Adjure Flush Mounted Front Axle so I can bring that to Traxxion too! Man, that front end will sure look as sweet as it performs now! ;) Hoist! 8)
