Title: My glide is in the workshop
Post by: PeterJ on October 26, 2015, 12:02:41 PM
Yesterday my bike went from normal oil pressure to zero in a matter of a few miles. The oil light came on and the clutch lever became very slack. Stopped the bike and found there was no oil on the stick. Put a quart of oil in. Bike ran ok for 500 yards and then smoke, oil on the ground and very little clutch. Also a very nasty grating sound. I'll get the workshop's opinion on the damage next week. There is oil on the engine and oil on the ground below the engine but I can't see where it's come from. Some oil seall must have gone. And what on earth could have caused the oil pressure to drop so quickly? A holed sump? Who knows. There is still oil on the stick from what I put into the engine. I better start rounding up some cash to pay for the outcome of the diagnosis.

Got an oil cooler?  Could be hose or debris could have punctured the cooler.  I know if two instances of this - one was mine.

Standard 110 engine with oil cooler. Mileage is just on 19000 miles.
Just had the call from the dealership. Engine is cooked. Just had the call from HD Guildford. Metal in the sump tray. No point even stripping down the engine as it would be a waste of my money paying for their time. Gear box is OK. Appears that a lifter most likely failed.

Ouch...... what year was your Street Glide? Hopefully a manufacturing issue and warranty will take care of it.....

Like said the bike is a 2012 model. And no mechanical insurance in place.  Even if I had insurance I don't think it would pay out as it would be my word to say that the oil level was good and the pressure just dropped whilst the insurance company would say that I hadn't checked the oil level and that it would be my fault the engine failed. Insurance companies in GB are renowned for their slippery avoidance of paying out.
One thing that the mechanic said after I told him that  I generally had to top up the oil level after every 1000 miles or so was that the engine may have had a problem prior to the catastrophic failure in that in his experience the HD engine didn't usually use any oil in between servicing intervals. Is this suggestion that the engine doesn't use oil the experience of the guys here on the forum?
So it's looking like an engine replacement. That's a big ouch to the wallet. Not sure if MoCo would supply a new 110 engine complete or whether the dealership would have to build the engine from MoCo supplied parts. Or do I go with the H-D SCREAMIN’ EAGLE 120ST CRATE MOTOR which I have read about in the on line sites. Not sure if I would get any more power by going from 110 to 120.  The write up for the 120 is impressive. Any knowledge on this 120 engine. ? http://www.cycleworld.com/2015/02/24/h-d-screamin-eagle-120st-crate-motor/
Ah well. I'm off to visit the workshop at midday to talk with the mechanic and the dealership principle.

The 2012 CVO's have the "C" lifters, which have many failures, and probably are suspect in your case.  It is a shame that you have to replace your motor with only 19,000 miles.

I probably would consider and S&S 124 before I would put a 120ST in my bike.  Sorry to hear about that major set back.  Best wishes.

Ish...that sucks Peter but I believe if you did have the extended warranty the dealer would have replaced it. In 2012 on our way to Sturgis my buddies 2011 CVO Convertible split a lifter. We limped into Black Hills Harley Davidson. They found that the metal went thru the motor. 3 days later the bike was ready and the had put a new 110 in the bike for the $50.00 deductible. They also covered his rental, food and room. Here in Toronto I took my 2011 CVO SG to the dealer during the winter. My lifters where making a terrible sound but was still running. I had almost 100 000 KM and they rebuilt the motor under warranty. So I have seen it on both sides of the boarder.

I would never own a Harley without the warranty.

Thanks for your words above. Yeh I had read about the problems with the 110 engine but never thought that it would happen on my tour. Anyway. I've been by the dealership, seen the bike and mechanics and now am waiting to have a discussion with the Dealer principle before I decide which route to go. One thing for sure it wont be a new 110 going in - that's totally cost prohibitive. I know very little about the S & S 124 engine. Why would you suggest that the S & S be a better choice than the HD 120ST? Thanks.

Rice Lake HD in WI has a brand new takeout 110 from a 2015 CBO Roadglide 0 miles for sale. Call scooter at 715-234-5400 for info. They are asking 5000.00 but I'm betting 3500.00 would get it.

I would suggest the 124 over the 120 because I own 2 of them and they are noisey motors, lifters need replacing lot of piston slap like the 110, don't really make the power they should, been more problematic than the S&S motors.  I have had great longevity the S&S.  Not saying you cant get a bad one, but hasn't been my experience thus far and have had their motors a long time.   Suggest a 124 low compression 10.25 to 1 with 585 cams a decent pipe, 58mm throttlebody by S&S and a good air cleaner and go ride it.
Title: Re: My glide is in the workshop

My primary motivation (performance aside) for opting for the S&S would be overall reliability and quality of components.  The failure of your motor, and many others, is prime evidence that Harley has taken short cuts in components, and quietly quit using the poorer quality lifters in the 13's on up for instance, when the lifter problem became apparent.

You can get the CVO stone gray S&S 124 (0310-0512) for about $550 more than the 120ST (black), so not much of a price difference overall.  I've read numerous threads regarding S&S 124 vs 120R/ST coupled with Moco's propensity to cheapen up on parts, influences me to lean towards the S&S motor over the 120ST or 120R.

So reading over your post, I feel for you and truly that sucks about your motor. Before you invest in any motor whether is MOCO or others, do yourself a favor and look at the newly introduced 124" by Fuel Moto or any others of FM's for that matter.  These guys can do phenomenal things and are very reasonable.     No I am not a Fuel Moto salesperson, just a truly satisfied customer.  You won't find better in my opinion and that of many others.

That sounds very positive!  That would be great if they stepped to the plate on this one, and would be great PR.  I hope they do the right thing and replace your motor! :2vrolijk_21: :apple:

Update.
HD GB management visited the dealership last week. They have made a considerable cash offer to assist in the purchase of a new 120ST engine. This is great news. I wont go into the dollar numbers here on the forum but a new engine fitted is not the nicest of things to spend ones hard earned cash on, not really knowing if something else might go down in the drive train in the future. So I decided I am not going to go the route of a new engine. The dealership are going to strip the engine down at their expense to determine what has actually broken within the engine, and will let me know. But there is no denying that an awful mechanical clattering sound and oil smoke when the engine gets fired up and chunks of metal and various bits of bearings in the sump are pretty conclusive in knowing that the engine is shot. The engine has always used oil from the day one that I purchased the 2012 bike. Not a lot, but when I said this to the mechanic at the dealership he did think that the usage was excessive and that maybe there was an issue there from the start of the bike's life. Anyway, that's in the past. Now for the present and future?

Rather than a new engine, I proposed to the dealership that they take my 2012 FLHXSE3 as a down deposit on a new ride. We negotiated dollar (pounds) numbers and came up with a deal that we are both happy with. The dealership move the FLHXSE3 on to a custom shop and the engine goes the same way to be re-built.

In return, in a weeks time, once I get off this rig in the North Sea offshore Scotland, I travel down to the dealership, sign over the registration documents on the FLHXSE3 and put my signature on the sales / registration papers and ride out on a brand spanking new
:jalapeno: :jalapeno: 2016 FLHXSE in Carbon Crystal with Phantom Flames  :jalapeno: :jalapeno:

The bike is sitting in the showroom right this very minute with my name on the SOLD sticker keeping other folk's asses off my seat.  :2vrolijk_21:

I think a very unfortunate situation has been turned around into a win win for both myself and the dealership. OK its costing me money that I wasn't going to spend for a few more years, and yes the dealership have taken a bit of a hit on the trade in value of a broken bike. But we are both happy with the outcome. Dealership gets nearer to it's end of year sales target and I am happy to have a fabulous ride with two year's warranty. Lesson learnt however, I will be buying the extra two year extended mechanical warranty. A wise move I think.

Any suggestion what tune I should choose to put into the BoomBox to ride out of the dealership.  :bananarock:   Photo's will be posted of the new ride after I have physically sat on it.

Right, I better get back to work to pay for this CVO insanity.

One other thing, please don't ask me about what the dollar numbers amount to, that's between myself, the dealership and HD corporate.

Not actually having sat on or walked around the 2016 bike, never mind having not even ridden it, I am wondering a few things if you knowledgeable 2014 plus bike owners can help me out.
1) Is the FM radio antennae at the rear of the bike, like on my 2012, or is it hidden inside the bat fairing? I don't actually see an antenna on the HD photos.
2) Does the 2016 Glide come with a two point docking hardware kit as standard OEM fitting.
3) Would the 2012 Touring four-point Docking hardware kit fit on the 2016 bikes or do I have to get a new hardware kit.
4) Would my 2012 Detachables Two-up Luggage rack and 2012 Detachables solo luggage racks fit on the 2016 bike?
And finally can you see the smile on my face knowing I only have nine days to go before I am on the road making some noise.  :bananarock: and then having a  :drink: to celebrate.

Congratulations on the new ride. As you said a win/win for all.
2016 CVO has antenna hidden in fairing.  No place for rear antenna.
2016 CVO does not come with docking system, there is no more HD two point after 2013
2016 CVO will no accept a docking system from a 2013 or earlier.  Different mount style
2016 CVO with new docking will accept your luggage racks.

Enjoy the ride and post pictures!!!   Your going to love the new bike compared to your older one.

Update.
I am going to wait for a bike to come from the States rather than the one presently in the dealership. Bike is on order, gets built in December and I collect from dealership mid January. I won't miss having the bike over the next few months of rain and salted roads. So pics delayed until January 2016.

Better for the dealership to get in two sales rather than one. So I am deferring my ride a few months.
Gives me a bit longer to raise the $$$$$$$'s to pay for it and spend some cash on a hi res 4K Sony TV for Xmas.

Congratulations on a good outcome.

I was at the local HD dealer the other day and a new owner of your exact bike pulled in, it was beautiful, so great choice.

So besides all the great CVO stuff you'll also get:

The tire pressure monitoring system and i noted it had 90 degree fill valves on each wheel, making it very easy to add air.

Hoping it arrives sooner than later. :)

Merry Christmas.
