Another accessory 15 amp fuse repair.
« on: January 14, 2024, 06:19:35 PM »

Hi all! it's been a long while since I posted. Nice to see others still posting, and not bailing to other social media areas.
Anyhoo, I was one of may victims of the illustrious intermittent accessory blowing fuse syndrome. after checking al the suggestions written up on the various sites, I thought I had it licked being it did not rear its head for a long stretch of time.
Of course last year, in about a third into my brother and I's venture to Barber Motorsport museum, it happened again! If your not familiar with the situation, when this fuse goes, you lose quite a few items you need, like your brake light, cruise, your speedo and tach, heated grips. I can manage most of those, but my brake light made me a bit uneasy.
We decided to continue on, and utilize hand signals.....what a pain. We also, after Barber, managed to continue across to the Blue Ridge via the Cherohalla parkway. Every once and a while we would throw a fresh fuse in and see if it would not blow, which actually worked a couple of times, (went through about 15 fuses!)
When I got home, it was time to see what was up. Wound up removing the front fairing, and started unplug things that had the common color code for the accessory circuit, while my VOM was tied into the fuse circuit for the accessories. Low and behold the plug that feeds the heated grips was the source of the short.
As you well know the wiring is fed through the handle bars, while is looks great, it makes for a nightmare removing the grips. I decided to just slip the grip our enough to hopefully see what was up.
 FOUND IT!

Since it was so close the the grip, I used a 2 part epoxy and sealed the broken insulation from each other. I am hoping this holds up for the duration of ownership, being I DON'T want to attempt to replace the grips any time soon.

Congrats. Finding a chafed wire is sooooooooo great. I had one of those on my rg. Found it in the gauge cluster behind the speedometer.
Hope your fix holds up. Mine was in the red wire that took me 2 months on and off to find it. Someone on here mentioned to look behind the speedometer.  I'm very grateful for that information. Stuart

Both those can  take a while to find.  Takes lots of patients.  Good to both of you for finding those.

I think on mine... The guy that did my bars cut away alot of the sleeving to make it easier to pull though the bars.  Look what happens. 😕

I'm always nervous when cutting away wire sleeves.  I would say your assessment of how it happened is correct.
