:nixweiss: curious would this eliminate compensator faults? Has anyone used it? Looks like it's a straight drive, would it create other problems if put on a stock primary?

compensator needed to absorb drivetrain pulse-shock,no compensater= flywheel-drive train- abuse,wish curing compensater issues were as simple as a solid gear

That BDL piece has been around for awhile, and it isn't much if any better than a simple solid sprocket. I wouldn't recommend it. The Harley Big Twin needs an effective compensator to protect the crankshaft and primary components.

Back in 08 my comp was replaced with Evo Industries solid sprocket. Made my arms and legs fall asleep 55mph and above. Really weird feeling. Had it taken out and first revision of HD comp assembly installed been in there since. I think what helped at Jim Hddude's advise Used Baker Primary bearing.

If your having problems with the Harley "compensator" , I can highly recommend the "Compensaver", but it only worth installing with a new or nearly new compensator.
It works to cover the compensator with a constant flow of primary oil, using a collecting tray beneath the chain to collect the oil then running past a magnet and then through holes and on to the sprockets of the compensator, the area that gets starved in the normal set-up.
I have been running one since it was launched and so far has been fine.

Just had the latest rendition of Harley's compensator installed under ESP. It also has the glue-in tray to direct oil to the places that were not getting oil. This one will buy me enough time to research an aftermarket replacement.
Even though I asked....I am sure they didn't check the tensioner or the chain.....or the bearings. I still hear a bit of chain slap and have the clunk into first....and hard to find neutral. Will be ordering a tensioner from SOHB...and checking things out inside ther myself!

I wasn't thinking of going that route. I was being curious whilst I was sloshing around in the paddling pool what benefit if any if one was installed. I see what you're all saying that the compensator is more like a shock absorber for the motor and primary components. Thanks for the input

If you have just had a new Compensator fitted, even with the glued in oil tray (which only helps getting oil to the centre of the comp),
it does not stop the lobes from excessive wear.
You should do a bit of research on the "Compensaver" at compensaver.com.
As I said "it works" very well.

Well there you go, it looks like HD have finally listened!!!
The "compensaver" has been suspended from Sale, they due to the fact that Harley have now copied there design so closely that they have finally got a reliable Compensator.
Took them long enough!

I have the stock compensator in my 07 ultra classic with 22k on it, so far it's doing good.
At some point I'm sure it'll need to be changed.
I see that the biggest problem with a compensator is the lack of lube getting to the inner part of the compensator any thoughts as to what would be a good compensator to upgrade too that's reasonably priced ?

Mine is a slightly earlier version, it had the Radial bearing, which was very noisey, the latest version has gone back to a fibre washer,
its much quieter.
One thing, do you have a seperate Stator cover and compensator, or is yours welded together with the comp spring pack assembly?
If so you will need to get a new Stator rota cover or cut the spring cup off the old one to enable the SE Comp to fit.

The one in that link might not be an H-D part, its identified as an Ultima part (aftermarket company). It doesn't come with the new style rotor so you would need to buy that separately. That one also comes with the noisy thrust bearing Trippy mentioned.
The one in the 2018 SE Catalog is shown in the attachment. If you still have the stock 2007 rotor, you will need the new style rotor. There is a separate kit, marked on the attachment, that comes with the new rotor. If you have the new style rotor, then you just need first one listed.

The attachment shows the two styles of rotors. If you are still running the same compensator that came with the bike from the factory, you will need the new style to install the SE compensator.

Looks like I'll have to go the kit 40100061 i see it states that SE PRO PERFORMANCE 129 has the needle bearing thrust washer supplied with it. As mentioned it's better to have the solid type thrust washer that would have to purchased separately and do away with the needle bearing type

I believe the latest version does come with a fibre washer instead of the Radial bearing.
As for the Stator cover, it really is not that difficult to modify your stator cover,
1. using mole grips straighten the crimps on the outer edge of the spring cup, this will allow the springs to come out, leaving an empty
cup.
2. using a angle grinder and metal cutting disc, cut around the cup as closely as you can to the stator cover, then using a metal grinding
disc grind away the remainder of the cup, and finish off with a flap disc.
You just have to be careful not to drop the stator or give any sharp blows, as the magnets on the inside can come off!!

Just had a look round my many boxes of parts, and guess what I found, HD part number 30041-08, Harley Stator cover,
its been in the loft for a couple of years (wrapped and boxed of course) and in very good condition with no signs of wear, if you want to make me an offer and pay the postage its yours (your in London I believe, so you can pick it up if you want).

Well I've gone for the 2016 compensator assembly 36500034A with the 83936-09 spring pack
I was informed that the 40100076 is 2017 for the m8 motors and all most 100.00 higher in cost
Hope it all going to fit. :confused5:

The numbers you mentioned are the individual part numbers for the repair kits, for those who already have the SE style compensator. They will work, you just won't get the tray that's in the kit.

That's right Jerry,
I had to get it all starting from scratch. I've got the oil deflector tray with the epoxy the thrush washer to replace the needle bearing that comes in the compensator assembly. The 07 compensator assembly and rotor are going
Here's a break down of what I've got.
Compensator assembly ,.....36500034A 189.00

I didn't buy it lightly I'd looked on line( eBay ) it was the high temp I going for and didn't feel comfortable with what I was seeing ( the last thing I'd want to happen is the tray to detach ) so I went with the recommend part number epoxy.
I considered and looked at that magic glue from your side of the pond "Gorilla Epoxy " but the temp rating is only 80°c

Noòoo you kidding me. Part number just said kit. I'll find out when it gets here should be here by Friday with the the other parts. Could also be because it's got the HD logo and made in China stamp on the package :-\ :nixweiss:

When that plastic tray deal first came out one of our enterprising members did some research and found the actual source of that specialized epoxy, as well as places people could order it. I seem to remember it was pretty expensive even before Harley added its mark-up.

The cost for that part in the Jersey HD link is a tax free cost.
Anything from Jersey UK is tax free. Helps on the pocket book. :)

Revamping this thread folks. Been 3 months and I am ready for another teardown. Thanks for all previous correspondences.
I have 2 different new thrust washers. Suspecting the needle roller bearing 3 part thrust washer may be the main source of my primary noise
A new "PEEK" thrust washer part number 40100064
AND a new PART NUMBER 6557 THRUSTWASHER
Longlast which one did you eventually use ?
I also have a new genuine HD primary chain which may as well go in at the same time. The latest/greatest genuine auto tensioner is already in there since last teardown.
I have done 1000 K's and was "hoping" the thing would settle down but alas not to be. 2000 RPM has a whirring/chattering just at cruising speed that does not fill me with confidence !!
