Deutsch, WeatherPack or Molex connectors ??
« on: January 09, 2014, 07:52:54 PM »

Ok gurus that do your own wiring for lights and what not. I need to add some connectors. Out of the three choices listed in the title which one(s) have you used and why? They all see like they would do the same job (weather proof and quick disconnect). Reading the listings on evilbay I see where the Deutsch claim to fame is that it is the connectors used by MoCo and even Caterpillar. I plan on buying a whole kit with crimpers so it isn't like I only need one or two items.
Thanks

Why wouldn't you use the Deutsch? The same as the MoCo?

I just bought a bunch of Deutche connectors and parts, as well as the $30 (or so) red handled crimper tool. It works well EXCEPT on the OEM cheap "tree" mounted connector pins Harley supplies. Maybe the REAL (expensive) OEM Deutche crimper tool (at $230!) works on them but anyway, i ruined a few before switching to the "normal" loose Deutche pin connectors. I just re-did my handlebar controls and i'm building harnesses for the bags that supply power and speaker leads. I'm using panel/flange mounts that will go thru the bags and be water resistant and quick release. So far, i like the Deutche system.

And nobody has ever complained about MoCo's engineering or quality either. Lol

I helped rewire a '66 Chevelle last winter with a complete Painless kit and it used the Weather pack style. Was just wanting real life experience from people that have used them on their bikes.

I've used both the Deutsch and Molex.

For me, my local dealer carries just about every variation of the Deutsch connectors, and they are reasonably priced. They also carry the various wire gauge sizes of the pins and sockets. They keep in stock 1 to 12 pin sockets and plugs.

I ended up buying a Weatherpack kit. Crimpers, pins, plugs and everything. Just wish it would warm up a little to go out to the garage and used them. :-\
