FXDSE Oil Consumption
« on: November 27, 2008, 12:26:50 PM »

Hi,

I'm trying to touch base with owners of the 07/08 FXDSE.
I have an 08 which was using oil from day one. In the first 840 miles I used nearly
1 3/4 qts of oil. I brought the bike in and they claim they noticed the rear plug was wet
with oil. So, they decided to replace the valve seals and at the same time do the
campaign for the 110 engine.

I have gotten it back and finding this after the fix...

After riding the bike home I checked the oil and it read 7 on the stick.
Just took the bike out today and rode 44 miles, returned and checked the oil after
letting it sit for 20 mins and it read 6 on the stick.

Has anyone experienced this type of oil loss?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Charlie

My 08 uses about 3/4 to 1 qt of oil to 1k miles. Have not had the update done yet but both plugs have burnt oil on them. Bike never smokes and has no leaks. Have been waiting for my razor to come at dealer so they can deliver that and pick up the bike for the update. On another note my snowmobile has to go back to same dealer for recall on it too. Razor has been waiting for the tracks to show up, bike needs update done and sled needs new gas tank and drag car has a brand new broken tranny in it.... I just can not seem to keep my toys in use this year. Oh well.

I'm hoping the update and new valve seals will stop my oil consumption. Will not know until bike week since winter is here for me.

all my twin cams have used oil...I've found a solution is to run them one pint low and they seem to use a lot less...don't get me wrong, it's possible you have other problems like have been mentioned

I have a 2008 FXDSE it is using oil also. It now has just over 2k miles. Prior to my 1000 miles I had to add 1 1/2 quarts.  I had the bike serviced for the 1000 mile service and had the recall performed at the same time. Once again just before the 2K miles, I'm adding another 1 1/2 quarts of oil.  I decided that it was using so much oil I better stock up and keep some in the garage for when I run low.  The parts person thought that I was changing my oil myself because I bought 4 quarts. I told him the problem and he said that was unusual for a new bike.  I wanted to talk to the services manager but I did not have the time and he was busy. I figured I would wait for my 3k service and then get it checked out.

I have read several postings on this site, some say it's normal, some say it's not and it depends.  Is this a problem that should be checked out by HD???? I have several friends here in the Low Country that do not trust our local dealer and I want to have as much knowledge as possible before I talk to my rep.

Thanks

I'm still watching mine...

I had the service center look at it and top off the oil. It was at 7 X when I picked it up.
Have ridden it 200 miles and it is down to 5 X.

I need to have this looked at, to me this is not normal or acceptable.

Here is a current result I am getting...

Had bike in for the 1000 check up at 914 miles. This included oil change which was to top of stick 7X when cold. Since then I have put 1,013 on the bike and cold it is reading 2X on the stick. 7X is consider a qt. What do you think of this usage??
