I left Salmon, Idaho about 6:30 a.m. this morning and rode the Bitterroot Valley of Montana.... 




I finally arrived at my home away from home for the next four days, historic Tamarack Lodge in Hungry Horse, Montana......just outside of Glacier National Park.

I had a new set of tires installed today at 32K. Stayed with stock as they've treated me well so far. Picked up a new set of plugs and wires. Figured since I'll have the tank off next week to install new bars and heated grips that the timing was right.

She's at home.  This is a solo bucket list ride to do all of these Rocky Mountain locations in one ride.

Are you saying you got 32K out of the factory tires? 

Since the 17 model year 13~14K is best I have managed.  Usually closer to 12K

That's a 16K average, still had at least another 1000 miles to get to the wear bars but one of my local dealers was only charging $45.00 per wheel on the bike for installation instead of $125.00 per and the promotion was almost over so I took advantage of their generosity.

$125 to R&R a wheel then dismount and mount and balance a tire.  That's normal?  It may be, I really don't pay attention to such things enough to say.  But, damn...  That's enough to make my special places pucker up just thinking about it; and again remind me why I prefer to do my own.

Okay that makes much more sense.  Wish I could even get 16K out of a rear on either bike.  $125 is not for tire installation and ballance, but dealers are very high on it.  Same with actual tire price. 

I'll need front and rear on the King in next couple thousand miles.  Most-likely will be American Elite again, but thinking hard about Commander 3's

Riding the CVO Road Glide over to SMHD for the 30K service.  Also to look at tank trim ring that gas cap screws into.  Paints coming off, should be covered under warranty.

Well hopefully they'll take care of you Dave. Wow 30K already, and you have 2 bikes! I was all set to try out the Commander III's this time but they don't make one for our 21s, but if they ever do I'll give em a shot for sure.

Your absolutely right, but $125.00 is the average hourly rate at the stealers out here on the left coast and the only place you can buy the D407 & D408's for the most part. They charge an hour labor per on the bike for turnkey service plus $4-$5 each to get rid of the old ones since the land fills won't take em any more out here (EPA), and I usually get 10 to 15% off locally but this was a better deal

It's not that the numbers don't add up.  They still seem painful when you're old enough to remember mounting and balancing free with tire purchase on cars and paying $25 for front and rear on a bike.  Gawd, it's no wonder my personal check engine light comes on every once in awhile....

I hear ya. Back in the early ninety's the same shop that I just dealt with which is now called Emerald City HD was called Lynnwood Cycle Barn (different owners). They used to do free mounting and balancing turnkey as long as you bought your tires from them at MSRP. A lot of the indie's these days are charging an hour each as well at around $90.00 an hour around here. Ouch.

Made a trip to near Dallas to see Carol Burks and had him install the Ohlin front cartridges.  He sent me the Ohlin rear shocks in March and I installed them myself.  Before I left, he checked the rear shocks and fine tuned them and replaced the spring because he thought it was too heavy. He put in a lighter one and what a nice difference.  The bike now floats and eats up the curves. Then I spent 5 days in the Ozarks "testing" them out.  During this trip I turned 100,000 miles on my Road Glide. Love that bike and will continue to ride it until I can't.
