I was told a long time ago from an old rider that if there is a rain storm not to ride a motorcycle in it because of the static the bike makes.
Maybe he was right.

I remember this on the news!  It was so odd.  I have been in so many storms and lightning. I had lightning hit near me and the impact pushed me across the other lane and almost off the road.  I rewired a car that was hit by lightning as well but the driver was fine.  When it is time it is time.

Is it possible that the helmet was made from carbon fiber?

Carbon in the fiber would be conductive.  Polyester fibers would not be conductive.

Just thinking that if it was, the new carbon fiber helmets may not be the way to go in the future.
