2015 CVO SG - High Output Charging System?
« on: November 21, 2017, 03:43:56 PM »

Does the 2015 CVO SG have a High Output Charging System already installed from the factory? I'm looking to add the lower fairing speakers and an additional amp. I'm assuming I'll need the high output system too. Thanks

Yes, the 15 FLHXSE and the FLTKSE come with the high output 53 amp charging system.

So I am planning on adding an audio system upgrade to my new '18 FLTRXS. I read that the audio system alone should not drive me into getting an upgraded charging system. However, I also added heated grips, a heated seat, use heated riding gear and I plan on adding front hybrid LED lights with both broad and narrow pattern.

So I am wondering, how much does the standard charging system output in amperage?

Also, the High Output Charging system lists at $510. How difficult is this to install in my own garage? Do you need pullers for the rotor and stator? (I am totally unfamiliar with charging systems). The picture doesn't look like it would be that difficult just from the parts listed as requiring replacement.

Complete kit includes high performance rotor, stator, voltage regulator and all gaskets and hardware required for installation

Finally, this kit will work on touring models up to 2016. I can't find anything with regard to 2017 and 2018. Could the newer models with the M8 have an improved or higher capacity charging system as standard?

Thx
Simon

I did find this on one of the Harley dealer sites under their description of the 2017 FLTRXS model.

High Output Accessory Connector: Touring means maximum comfort in all conditions and the capacity to add whatever enhances and personalizes your ride. The high output charging system provides an electrical capacity robust enough for your add-ons: heated vests, heated seats, heated handgrips, lights to showcase the engine, you name it. So if you're hell-bent on two-wheeling it, we make sure you've got the juice to do it your way.

Can anyone confirm/provide the output capacity on the '17/'18 touring models?

The parts catalog shows a 48 amp stator standard in the 2018 FLTRXS.  The high output system claims 54 amps @ 4000 rpm and the fitment tab shows it works on the 2018 FLTRXS.

My bad, I misread the fitment info, it only goes up to 2016 models.

Thanks Jerry .. I am still reading the fitment is for 2016 and below. Difference of 48 > 54amps is just a smidge over 5% improvement.

Damned eyeballs.  I swore that 2016 was a 2018 on that fitment tab, but after you mentioned this I went back and looked closer.  You're absolutely right, it only shows up to 2016 models.  I apologize for the mistaken info.

I decided to look at this another way and compare the alternator and regulator part numbers for a 2018 FLTRXS and a 2018 CVO Limited, thinking the CVO would have the highest output charging system just like in 2016.  What I found was that both bikes use the exact same parts (rotor, stator, voltage regulator).  It seems strange to me that Harley upped the charging system output for the Twin Cam CVO's compared to the non-CVO's, but didn't increase output for the M8 CVO's.  Perhaps someone determined 48 amps was all they really needed.

And that the pre-17 stock charging system of 32amps wasn't enough for today's modern motorcycles. I, for one, am happy to have a higher than prior year standard charging system on my new scoot.

32 amp systems went away with the 2005 models.  2006 touring bikes went to the 45 amp three phase charging system.  That was a significant improvement over the prior (and old) system).  My 2005 red bike with the various upgrades I'd hung on it and even with the HID headlight rather than halogen still taxed the 32 amp system when I had on a full set of heated gear.  Me and a passenger in heated gear necessitated a charging system upgrade.

Fortunately I've yet to need more than what the 45 amp three phase system from the 06-09 bikes can produce.  Those parts are an easy swap to upgrade the older TC bikes.

All good Simon.  You're still doing way better than me.  I've been wrong at least a dozen times today and I ain't even done yet.  You're batting average is way better and I haven't even talked to anyone from HD!
