How many keys
« on: March 21, 2020, 08:26:43 PM »

My friend just bought a 2020 ultra and only got one key. Anyone know if this is right? Billy

Yes, I've heard for 2020 that there is no 2nd key as well as no rear shifter arm/peg unless it's a CVO. Harley going out of their way to show off their penny pinching ways these days.  :nixweiss:

I know an owner of a 2020 Road Glide.  He got one fob.  That seemed ludicrously cheap on Mother Harley's part.  He did get two keys though.  I know this only because we joked about needing a really really really long retractable key ring to keep the one fob attached to both keys.

Just as easy to piss buyers off in small ways as it is in big ways.  Incredibly cheap way to go.

Keep looking, Harley cheeped out on more than just those two items.  Upper dash is now flat black instead of matched to inner fairing.  Road glide vents no longer close.

Its Harleys business model, raise the price, and remove components to make it cost less to build.

Really sucks on their part. I really don't know what they were thinking by leaving the upper inner fairing flat black.  Looks terrible to me.  I do use the fairing vent shutters too at times. They are thinking way too much.   :nervous:Stuart..

The more I read the threads about decontenting while raising prices, and of course the downward spiral in engineering and quality, the happier I am that I swore off new Harley's over ten years ago.  I have a hard time rewarding people or companies that screw people over on a regular basis.  I'm also a believer in the old adage: fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Is one fob common in the motorcycle industry?  Indian only provides one fob, not sure about Honda and BMW.  Realistically, what would you do with the second fob?  The extra fob for my SG hung on a hook in my garage until I traded the bike.

since 2007, i have purchased 7 new bikes between the wife and i.  i have gotten two fobs with each of them.  since that time, i have needed the second fob exactly zero times.

but, i still would prefer to get the second fob on purchase.

My wife carries the 2nd for when we're together. I carry both fobs when on a trip without her. Peace of  mind.

A friend's fob failed on a trip.  Major PITA until he got it fixed.

I don't mess with it locally.  The second fob  stays on the garage wall.  I always take the spare with me on road trips though.  Have needed it twice since in the 20 years or so since the first bike I installed the alarm system on.  One time when just way the hell out west and battery in fob died. Had no clue what the handlebar code might have been.  One time when I lost a fob and keys in a lake.  Yes, alcohol did, perhaps, have something to do with that latter episode (someone else was very drunk and bumped in to me, of course).  But it was still nice in the morning to have the spare keys and fob together in my travel bag.

i hope that you've figured out your override code since then.    :bananarock:

At that time it was all new.  That was a 1998 95th anniversary Road King that I'd installed the alarm system on.  After installing the alarm it never occurred to me (nor did I read the instructions well enough to know) that there even was a handlebar code.

The sales man told me they cut back on a majority of the things because most people don't use them or don't turn them in when they trade them in. Vents that open and close are nice if you live in colder climates. In Florida, mine never get closed. Still would like the option to close them though. Keys / fobs he said most people only turn one in on trade in. Rear shifter lever, I think looks nice but have never used it. All my luggage and bike cover are still sealed in the plastic in the closet along with the head set as I don't wear a helmet in Florida. I'm not agreeing with taking things away but I kind of understand. I almost bought a 2019 because they still have fender tips.

As far as the pass code, as long as you have the key fab you can reset it. It's one of the first things I do when I get the bike home. Makes it harder for the dealer to repo it. Not that it has ever happened but it just might now with this Coronavirus crap.

That sales guys can can cite all kinds of reasons the heel shifter, extra fob, etc., was removed from new bikes, but that’s all BS...we know this was a cost cutting move.

Since 20017 we have bough 7 CVO and 7 touring bikes for my wife.  The spare keys are always in my tool box. May garage is in the basement, our bed room on the 3rd floor.  The spare keys are used often to move one of the 6 bikes around in the garage, or to get my car out of the garage as a bike has to be moved to move the car.  Also on our two or three trips a year we each carry a spare for the other persons bike.

CVO lost XM radio...

2020 CVO's also lost the custom aluminum rider footboard mounts. They now have the standard black mounts that the regular touring line uses. I wish they would have given the garage door opener to the Smithsonian museum. That piece of junk is right out of the 70's. I'd sooner see the money from that thing put towards the XM radio.

My 2016 BMW GS is keyless and only came with one fob. You do also get a flimsy plastic emergency key that you have to hold up under the rear fender to start it.
