Colorado 2020

Over the years I have been blessed with many fond memories of my time, riding, fellowshipping, meeting new friends, experiences and so much more as a result of this site.

Many moons ago, 2006, I was contacted by JC (JCZ) and ak (Andy) regarding their cross-country trip to my neck of the woods.  It was exciting to hear of their plans and I must admit that I was envious of their planned adventure.  I had already taken my own but there was something about our conversations that brought this all to a different level.

Somewhere along the way, I seemed to recall inviting myself along for the adventure back to Cripple Creek, CO.  We had never met each other but on the telephone and I knew after that first conversation that I wanted to be a part of that krewe!

Since then I have had the wonderful opportunity of riding with these folks and many others around the USA and Canada.  A wonderful experience filled with dreams coming true and adventure around the corner.

Earlier this year, I was contacted by JC, once again, to join him and a small krewe on his next adventure which included Colorado.  I instantly made the commitment with anticipation each day!  THEN IT COME – COVID-19!  CHIT!  I was still committed but uncertain of the future.

It was all looking acceptable, sure there were a number of items to consider and plan for with disappointments along the way.  BUT COMMITTED.  Then it came!  The one event that had been rescheduled with a commitment I made 18 years ago.  DAMN!  Disappointed yes but I made the commitment and wanted to be there.  My decision was shared with JC and as always, he was gracious and understanding.  But that did not stop me from thinking of a trip to Colorado.

Yes, I have been there many times but this is a state that I enjoy and there is plenty to experience like so many other states.  It was time to plan and that would take me back to some of the trips I enjoyed in the past.  So with that in mind, I will be continuing an old thread that included our 2015 Ouray, CO GTG.

Come along, if you choose for another trip into Colorado as we continue our exploration of this adventurous state.

Day One | Savannah, GA | 500 miles

This would be a travel day after leaving late morning and would consist of what has become a tradition.  Rain on the first day and within miles of leaving my abode.  The good news, as I see it, got the bike dirty early and that forced me not to be concerned about it any longer.

It would be a warm day too as temperatures were in the mid 90’s.  Cooled down after the rain but not for long.

Once I arrived in Nashville, I would need to work for a few days prior to getting the trip started.

Day Two | O’Fallon, MO | 300 miles

A late start to the day as I had to complete some work prior to departing.  That did not matter much since the St. Louis Arch would be closed and I wanted to take that in at night as I have before.

Today’s journey was filled with plenty of wind gusts up to 20mph.  In addition, it was very cloudy with slight rain and much colder temperatures in the upper 60’s.

Sadly, today would be filled with horrific accidents.  One of which was a FedEx OTR driver, over 40 years of experience, killing himself and another in an accident.  The accident blocked all lanes and traffic was backed up for over 20 miles.  After waiting for some time, it was time to lane split, illegal or not.  By the way did I say I was in Illinois?  They do not take to that too kindly.

After a long delay I made a little time but only to come up on another accident.  Who said there were not folks on the road traveling during “the nineteen”?

I give!  Time to shut down the day.  Windy, cold, rain, start, stop.  You win.  I stop!

Day Three | O’Fallon, MO – Colby, KN | 660 miles

Well!  Highway construction!  DAMN!  More lane split!

Given that position and the delays, I had to say no to the Evil Knievel Museum but perhaps one day!

Mostly a gas and go day and for the most part no evidence of “the nineteen”.  Masks were not seen too often and most restaurants had open dining.
