Title: What oil type are you using?
Post by: Cartman34 on July 19, 2019, 03:07:10 AM
Please don't make this a "my oil is better than your oil" BUT, what oil are y'all using on your bikes?
I'm a fan of Amsoil...
What grade of oil and where: 20w50 goes here, and this type goes there, ECT. I've done the 3hole on my '09 but I have NO clue what type of oil goes in the M8's. Amsoil makes a full kit for earlier models, I'm not sure IF they make a new M8 kit.
I hope this makes sense.

Either Mobil 1 for V Twin Engines or Harley Davidson's brand of the same thing "Syn 3"

Any synthetic 20w-50 in the engine is fine.

Pretty much anything wet clutch compatible in the primary.

Synthetic gear oil in the tranny.

Now dats phuny rat dare... :huepfenlol2:

HD dinosaur oil in every other Harley I've had and Syn 3 in the most recent three.  I've got two gallons that I won't be using anymore that's gonna be donated to a buddy... :2vrolijk_21:

I know you don't have to use the stock or factory suggested oil but it's handy and the MoCo branded oil does well, at least it has for me.  Going forward, I'm hoping the Indian branded oil is as good or better.

in my previous bikes, and my cvo I used mobile1 15w-50 purchased from Walmart for $25 for a 5 qt jug.  shell rotella t 15w-40 for the primary, $15 for 4 qt jug, and the full synthetic supertech from wm for about $6 per qt.

now, while that has served me well for years, with this new m8, i'm planning on formula + for the tranny and primary (until I can be sure that there is no oil migration, and redline 20w-60 for the engine.

I use Mobile 1 V Twin 20/50 for engine and primary and Redline Heavy Shockproof in the tranny. Works great for me and Mobile 1 is readily available from several auto supply stores and they are open Sundays and Mondays.  ;)

Mobile 1 at $8,99 from Ebay. I brought the info from Ebay and O'Reilly Auto and they matched price.

Run Amsoil if you want. I am pretty sure the HD filter part number for the tc are the same for the M8
In that event, run the Amsoil filter also. It is made by Champion labs. Same manufacturer  as the HD filter I believe. They make a decent primary fluid. I cannot attest to the trans fluid since I run Spectro in my scoot

That's a bit high.  It's actually priced at $78.99 MSRP with 5 1/2 quarts of oil, two crush washers and a filter.  I've got a $10 off coupon for the kit along with 15% discount at the dealer so it should come in just over $60.  I let them do the first one at 500 miles (actually watched them go through the entire list from Indian...took about 1.5 hours) and it was less than my last HD 1,000 mile first service from the dealer....I'll do all the rest myself.

The IM oil change kit is $80 for a filter, 5 1/2 qts. of oil and two crush washers.  Not bad if you consider Mobil 1 is $10 a quart ($10x6 = $60), so that leaves you paying $20 for a filter and two crush washers.

However, you can use Shell Rotella synthetic T6 15w40 at $20 a gallon, buy a filter at an auto parts store, and a couple of crush washers, and complete an oil change for well under $60.

I just remember him telling me that a couple of years ago. Good to its less and coupons are available as well as other options now.  :drink: And isn't it just one spot for oil instead of three on HD?

Amsoil 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil
Amsoil Synthetic V-Twin Primary Fluid
Redline V-TWIN TRANSMISSION OIL WITH SHOCKPROOF
The only reason I run Redline in transmission is it is easy to see on the dipstick. Got tired of dying the Amsoil Synthetic V-Twin Transmission Fluid
