Title: Saddlebag came off at 68 mph (pics enclosed)
Post by: Lone Rider on February 27, 2015, 08:45:34 PM
Has anyone heard of any problems with the 2014 CVO Deluxe saddlebag locks / connectors?

The bags were secured as usual and half an hour later I hit a small pothole and off she went.

As you can see the plastic connector has splintered rendering a poor connection.

$1,400 to replace - not happy but can't help thinking this is not a once off.

Cheers

I saw it happen once but it was a 2010 CVO Softtail convertible. I am not sure if they are exactly the same setup. They were similar bags though.

There is a thread in the CVO Convertible board regarding this - FLSTSE3 Saddlebag falling off (http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=98357.0).

The mounting bar and brackets are the same for the 2014 Deluxe and the 2012 Convertible, but the 2010 Convertible is a different design and different part numbers.

Hey Jerry,
As far as Harley info goes I would not question any information you see fit to put on this site. But being an owner of a 2012 cvo convertible, I cannot believe that the MoCo would use such a piece of crap locking mechanism on any other Harley as they used on the 2012 convertible...say it ain't so. They ought to be ashamed of themselves if it is true. :smilie_daumenneg:

As stated in other posts I have had a bag fall off once at highway speeds and swore it would never happen to me again. So far it hasn't.

My wife had the same thing happen to hers on I-95 heading to Bike Week last year.  With it being a brand new bike, she was inexperienced with the locking mechanism.  She went out to the bike the night before leaving on the trip and (in the dark) took out her heated jacket.  We "think" she must have hit the locking mechanism when pulling out the jacket and just didn't realize it.  So.....at 75 mph, going down I-95......boom!  There it went.  Since then, she put on about 30,000 miles with no other issues.  She now has a "procedure" when it comes to taking things in and out of the bag.  She checks it to make sure they are in the locked position before closing the lid.  It sounds like a pain, but really only takes about 5 extra seconds, and is totally worth it to not look in the rear view mirror and see her $1300 (ish) bag rolling down the interstate!!  This happened to me a few years ago on 7 Mile Bridge headed to Key West.......it happens!!!

a couple years back a coworker with the a convertible (CVO) lost a bag, HD took no responsibility and gave no help with replacement. sad part was it took three days of searching to find all the contents that was in the bag...a 45 cal. pistol, cant just leave one of those behind

Unfortunately H-D has no shame, and will continue to use a bad design long after it becomes obvious it is a bad design.  Caveat emptor!

This happened to me also, I'm replacing mine with hard bags and different mount.  (As money permits)
I got a set of take offs, need to figure out mounting options.

Sorry for your mishap....

easiest, cheapest, fastest insurance for this crap/bad design = 2 zip-ties/re-usable zip-ties

Just wondering did you ever replace the bag? If so how much did it cost ya if ya don't mind me asking. I'm thinking of going the hard bag mount myself.

I came withoin a hair of losing the hard bag on my 2013 SERK. Fortunately I had arrived at my destination and was parking when the darned thing just plopped over on the ground. Timing was on my side. Now I put a piece of duct tape on each latch to keep the darned thing from accidentally coming lose.

Just lost my right side bag on a recent trip. I have driven this bike for the last 12 months with no issue. 20 mins into a trip and riding with a passenger and small luggage the bag popped off when we hit a bump on the road. The bag was secured correctly and should not have moved. My theory is that the latch moved possibly when items in the bag jumped when we hit the bump. At the same time the bag also felt the force and dislodged. Bag is damaged and all due to very shoddy design in my opinion. Any updates on hd offering replacements or recalls for this issue, many thanks.
