XR1200 American debut

MILWAUKEE (December 1, 2008) - Inspired by the XR-750, the most dominating American dirt track racing motorcycle of all-time, the Harley-Davidson XR1200 is now poised to boost adrenalin levels on streets, roads and highways around the world. The XR1200 is a powerful new Harley-Davidson hot rod motorcycle that was initially designed and launched only in European markets in April 2008. With the high degree of interest and passionate reception surrounding the bike’s European release, as well as demand from Harley riders and competitive brand owners alike, the XR1200 is now being launched in all markets. Drawing significant styling influences from the successful Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycles that set new standards for dirt track racing success over the last 30 years, the XR1200 features technical innovation to provide potent street performance and handling. In fact, Harley-Davidson dirt track racing legends Scott Parker and Rich King participated in the XR1200 development.
“The XR1200 is an exciting motorcycle with an aggressive attitude,” said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Vice President, Core Customer Marketing. “This bike will provide the performance and distinct style demanded by uncompromising riders. In fact, hundreds of XR1200s were ordered by enthusiastic customers before we really even promoted it.”
The successful dirt track legacy continues today as Harley factory rider Kenny Coolbeth won his third straight AMA Grand National Twins flat track championship on the XR-750 in 2008. While distinctive racing paint and graphics on the XR1200 will catch the eye, Harley-Davidson racing tradition and influence are clearly evident in the bike’s key features, design and style. The 1200 cc Evolution V-Twin engine with its high 10.0:1 compression ratio, performance cams, downdraft fuel injection, precision-cooled cylinder heads and large capacity oil cooler cranks out 90 hp with high torque. Rubber mounted to a new frame with a cast aluminum swingarm, the engine delivers exhilarating performance and responsive handling with less vibration. A unique upswept, high-volume 2-1-2 straight shot exhaust system includes dual mufflers and is finished in satin chrome. A sport-tuned Showa® suspension with inverted 43 mm front forks and twin preload adjustable shocks combines with lightweight black cast three-spoke wheels to make the XR1200 ride and corner with feeling. Specially designed Dunlop® Qualifier D209 tires connect the rider to the road, while Nissin® four-piston large disc front brakes provide stopping power.
Additional racing influences on the XR1200 include details like dirt track style bodywork, wide black low-rise handlebar, a 29.2-inch seat height and aggressive riding position. Rearset foot pegs provide additional cornering clearance with a 39-degree lean angle. The compact instrument cluster combines a digital speedometer, white-faced tachometer, dual trip meter and clock. The XR1200 is available in Vivid Black, Mirage Orange Pearl and Pewter Denim colors. The Harley-Davidson hands free Smart Security System is optional in North America.

An Evo motor with 10:1 compression.  90 HP (at 7K rpm) and 68 ft. lbs. torque.  And, so what's the weight?  It mighta been fun twenty years ago.....I'm to old for a bike like that, now. :nixweiss:

I agree that it is most probable they failed outside the US so they are trying to dump them here.

I was talking to a Sales Manager yesterday about this bike and he mentioned me that the bike HAS TO BE ORDERED by a customer (not in stock by now) with the "obligation" of this customer takes the bike on the delivery. He can't be retracted of the deal otherwise the dealer would be penalized.

It would have seemed to me that the XR1200 was an attempt by the MoCo to appeal to a younger market--something they need badly to do.  If this dealer has the position you state, then it would appear he has no confidence or interest in selling the bike.  I highly doubt that the MoCo would develop a new bike, then penalize a dealer for not pre-selling them sight unseen.

I'd like to e-mail the MoCo and ask them if they're aware of this dealer's "policy".

Bottom line--sounds like more dealer BS.

The first wave of bikes are orange and number 700+.  Until, I believe, December 15th dealers may pre-order a unit with a customer's name on the form.  If the person on the pre-order form is not who ends up showing on the warranty registration the dealer will have a financial incentive removed.  Regular shipments will start sometime after the first of the year and also have black available.  Some dealers are willing to put down a bogus name to get the bike in stock and suffer the removal of the small financial incentive, some are not.

Okay.  Because it's HD we're talking about here, I believe you.  Only the MoCo would introduce a new model in times of already difficult sales, and figure out a way to make it even more difficult to sell.

Saw one of these up close and personnal at a dealership when I was out in Austin, TX last week.  It's a good looking Sporty, but two main things I didn't care for at all.  The rear-set foot controls (put my old legs into a position that actually hurt my knees), and the rock-hard seat, if you want to call it a seat. I would probably last 20 mins in that seat before I'd have to get off.  It has one he!! of a beefy swingarm.  Haven't seen something that big on an American bike before.  The rear brake cylinder sits above the footpegs external to the frame and is surrounded by a metal protection cage.   It's the first production Harley I've seen with a digital speedometer, but had an analog tach though.  It has a 180 rear tire and a pretty beefy front tire, and inverted forks. The bike was sitting on the sales floor, but the salesman said that it was sold as he stated that the initial batch were by order only.

I had an opportunity to sit on one at the International Motorcycle Show in San Mateo, CA this last weekend. The bike just did not feel right under me. Foot position was fine, handlebars were ok, nothing a good tilt couldn't fix. But, there was no place to put your knees into the tank for aggressive turning. I have a Ducati Monster I use for my days when I want to haul it in the hills, I think it's going to stay with me for a while now.

The cat will have to go.

Had to talk with Tman about what he can do.

I ordered one for an April delivery. (a silver and black one)

The XR1200 is now set to do its racing heritage proud as it becomes the focus of a new race series - the Henderson Harley-Davidson XR1200 Trophy. At the opening round of the 2009 British Superbike Championship, up to 35 of these European-focused bikes will take to the track for this one-make series, one of the most exciting ever seen in the UK.

The 35-strong dealer network is expected to offer full support for this historic race, ensuring full grids all season for the 10-race series, running across nine events. Entrants will have further inspiration to take part in the event thanks to the attractive prize fund - Harley-Davidson are backed by Henderson Insurance for this event.

Competitors holding an ACU licence at Clubman level or higher are entitled to enter. Entry will include the XR1200 motorcycle, full race kit, branded BKS leathers and a season-long tyre deal.

The aim of the event is to attract a varied mix of experienced Clubman, Superbike and Superstock contenders, including some fresh talent looking to develop their racing skills. It is an invaluable opportunity for young stars to compare their capabilities directly with practiced professionals, learning from them and honing their craft on the track.

Greg Willis, Harley-Davidson UK and Ireland Marketing Manager commented: "We believe that we have put together an extremely exciting and attractive proposition with the Henderson Harley-Davidson(r) XR1200(tm) Trophy. It gives us a fantastic opportunity to showcase the bike's performance credentials to a wider audience and adds further variety to the existing British Superbike Championship line-up."

British Superbikes (BSB) Race Director Stuart Higgs is equally emphatic, adding: "Harley-Davidson is probably the most iconic motorcycle brand in the world and the opportunity to create a partnership within BSB was one not to be missed. The prospect of a grid of thundering XR1200s will be a great spectacle for both our trackside and television audiences."

Took this bike for a test drive a few months ago, its mega, goes like a dream, great sounding, handles very well, looks great, a cowboy's Harley no doubt
