Freestyle motocross racer Jeremy Lusk dies
« on: February 10, 2009, 03:57:58 PM »

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP)—Jeremy Lusk, an American freestyle motocross racer, died of head injuries two days after crashing while trying to land a backflip in competition. He was 24.

He had surgery in Calderon Hospital in San Jose to relieve swelling on his brain, but his condition worsened and he died Monday night, Metal Mulisha, his riding group, said Tuesday.

Lusk won a gold medal at the 2008 X Games. He was injured Saturday night when he failed to complete a full rotation while attempting a Hart Attack backflip and slammed headfirst into the dirt. Lusk crashed in almost identical fashion in the freestyle semifinals at the 2007 X Games but was not hurt.

He had a successful 2008 season, winning Freestyle gold at the X Games and silver in Best Trick when he landed the first double-grab Hart Attack backflip. He won a bronze helmet in Freestyle at the Moto X World Championships in his hometown of San Diego.

Lusk, who lived in Temecula, Calif., is survived by his wife, Lauren.

Oh no! Great kid. I didn't need that today. Did a lot of crazy things in my youth as a MXer and loved watching Jeremy do his tricks. Damn.

So sad to learn this...  but also seemed inevitable this would happen to one of these guys one day...  Fun to watch - but so dangerous....

Condolences to Jeremy's family and friends....  Gods Speed.....

How awful.  These kids are so talented and this is just a shame for him and his family.

Being a former MXer myself (In the dark ages when a stunt was crossing your bars in tha air!) I've watched these guys with admiration, but fear as well.  There was no way to watch and not see that his had to happen sooner or later.  It's impossible to control the outcome once they commit on some of these stunts.  I'm not sure I'll be able to watch again... My heart was in my throat everytime, but I always could say that no-one's been seriously hurt... Now this outcome will be in my head.

Ride Safe,
J-Carr

It is Terrible.
The stunts get wilder all the time pushing the envelope, almost to the point that I have a hard time watching some of them.

Very sad day though
