Read the article, not sure the risk was worth the reward??? $20,000 raised and 31, 192 miles ridden. I am all for raising money for worthy casues but this was crazy. Lets do things that we can replicate safely. I had a friend that was attempting an iron butt ride an had a unfortunate crash that alomst took his life. I encourage everyone to ride many many miles but please do it safe.

The Iron Butt Association and the long distance riding community promote safe motorcycling first.  Like most interests, there are risks and rewards for participating depending on the level of involvement.  You won't find me hanging from the side of a mountain by a string for any amount of money, but folks do it regularly and safely.

I may try to break his record someday....for free.

I don't recall the actual number of tires he went through off hand. But, it seemed incredibly high. How dd he go through so many tires? Isn't that a BAD thing for Harley to publish? It's a bit lime saying "Our tires are worthless"

In the article he states that at one point a police officer gave him an ultimatum - follow me to a motel and check in for some rest or go to jail.  Wow, that's being safe isn't it.  This is CRAZY whether it is for a good cause or not.  Personally I don't want to be anywhere near someone who is as exhausted as he states he was several times - asleep next to his bike and passersby thought he was dead, etc.  Public safety should come before these type of stunts.  Shame on H.O.G. for promoting it in their publication.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, marshall10,

I'd say a combination of torque and speed.  Ol' Maudie trashes a rear tire every 4000 miles, and a front one every 12,000.  I don't do burn-outs, or power-shifts, either.  I just ride WFO, when possible.  ;) Later--HUBBARD

I can't defend the particular individual and haven't read the particular article due to a recent adress change, but personally, I think it's about time they (HOG) start promoting something besides bar hopping 100 mile days.  There are numerous ways to see the country on a motorcycle as well as other conveyances.  None of them garrantees you will return home in one peice.  A person has to know his limitations.  Obviously you do.  Maybe this gentlman pushed his, but that's his decision, not yours, mine or the police.  Safety, both public and personal, is of utmost concern at all times.  But nothing is ever safe.

He had a tragic accident from which he's supposed to recover.  A broken neck I believe.  Don't know the cause or fault but it was during a normal ride I guess.

Ole Hubbard,

Them big inch motors sure do eat them tires up.  Thanks for posting that HISTORICAL data, awfully glad you weren't trying to pass it on as recent data though, cause we know poor Maudie is jonsing for some wind.   So is it true a rear tire lasts you 2 or 3 seasons now?  :nixweiss:  :huepfenlol2:      ::) :innocent:

Hope all is well and that you get the chance to ride some here when the weather and your schedule allows for it.
