Easy start cam noise.
« on: August 29, 2015, 10:10:55 PM »

I have a set of S&S 585 easy start cams in my bike. Love how they work but they make a nasty rattle at idle.  Read on here some place that S&S will replace the cams free of charge if they are making noise. Is this true? Has any one returned something to S&S? Want the same cams with no easy start option. Thanx

S&S works through a dealer network and it is best to work through the dealer you bought the cams from

Before you contact S&S about your EZ Starts, check out the tune on your engine, too slow an idle can cause problems along with a lean idle, incorrect lifters settings, or a bad compensator. If  your sure these aren't issues, then go thru an S&S dealer, they will accept no other way. twinotter

Don't forget that adding a performance camshaft to TBW bikes will in most cases add throttle noise.
So what I am saying is throttle body noise can be mistaken for valve train

Thanx for the heads up,  it makes the same clangging sound before and after the tune. I don't think it's a lean idle. I have the baked comp, and as a matter of fact the stock comp was so noisy that it obscured the cam sound. As soon as I changed to the silent baker comp I started to hear this other sound. Then went for a dyno tune and the builder / tuner heard as well. Asked me if I had the easy starts. Said he always hears them rattle.  I'm not sure about the idle, will check but seems the same as always. What should it be idling at?  Thanx.

Take the AF off and put your finger on the throttle plate lightly and see if it changes

I will give that a shot for sure first. The TB does make some noise at idle but you can also hear the cams at the same time. But will try to touch the tb first to see if it cold be it.

I can pretty much guarantee the noise isn't coming from the EZ starts.we use a lot of them here and when installed properly, you will get a slight clunk when you shut the bike off,but no extra noise when running

Also check for something loose, heat shield, footboard etc. I once thought I had a lifter noise, turned out to be a loose footboard on the right side.

Seen the same/same on incoming bikes here.
Common, and often overlooked.

Old thread, I know...

I see that "Crane" [S&S] Rocket cams are available as such.

I originally looked at 570 EZ-Starts. My dealer could not get them to work, with a great deal of back-firing and clanking. We swapped them out and went to 570 conventionals. They went in and fired right up with no problems. I did have to install manual compression releases, but now I am not locked in to S&S cams for the future.

pretty much guarantee the first cam install wasn't done properly.no reason for EZ starts to backfire & make noise and non ez starts to run fine

I have the 570 EZs and have no issues with them. The only "noise" I hear is from the gear driven cams. No backfire or clank.
