What wash to use to remove old wax
« on: June 10, 2015, 02:27:27 PM »

I have always heard and used Dawn dishwasher detergent to wash the bike.  Understand it does a good job of removing old wax prior to putting on a new coat.  Just got some Glare in (after reading all the positives about the product on this site).  They state to use their wash but frankly didn't see the need to spend that type of $$'s.  What think ye?  thanks

I think the best approach is to use one of the cleaner products designed to be used before applying wax.  I use one made by Mother's called California Gold Pre-Wax Cleaner, I also used one years ago called Car Skin, and there are many others on the market.  They are nonabrasive and clean the surface chemically.  I'm not familiar with the Glare product, but I assume it's something similar at a higher price point.

All the experts will tell you not to use dishwashing liquid to wash your car or bike.  If you meant you only use it before waxing the bike, that's OK.  But if you meant that you always use Dawn when washing the bike, I'd suggest you go with a detergent designed specifically for washing cars and other vehicle paint jobs.

Thanks Jerry for the response, and yes I should have stated I have used Dawn or any other dish soap only for removing wax.

A bonus for using Dawn when you're detailing is that it will also clean any oil/grease residual or residue at the same time.  I've used it to clean bikes, cars, trucks even the engine compartments in my boats.  But, as Jerry recommended, I would not use it every time........unless you wax it every time.  :P

:2vrolijk_21:   Excellent point JC.  I've also used it to degrease parts that I didn't want to expose to more volatile chemicals.  There's a reason they use Dawn to clean wildlife caught in oil spills.

Oh....almost forgot.....there was a time in my life when I tried to keep the oil spots off of my driveway.....used Dawn for that too.  :2vrolijk_21:

Jerrys suggestion about Mothers #1 is good. In 48 years of cleaning cars/boats/bikes/trailers etc I have never found a better product, at any price point. Cleans and prepares paint for the application of wax. I also think #3 is a very good product that I use on everything automotive and also does good stuff to your granite counter tops in house.

Mix a small amount of dawn in a spray bottle fill with water kills ants, spiders etc.

I have found that Dawn is a little corrosive too. Rinse very well.

Appears to work great, was pretty impressed with the results.  That said, kinda expensive, but............
