Cleaning passing lamps
« on: November 06, 2012, 08:21:42 PM »

Does anyone clean the inside of their passing lamp lens?  Mine has a film and does not appear accessible for cleaning.

All the newer ones have removable bulbs.  Remove the lights, pull the bulbs and use a small rag with some rubbing alcohol to clean the inside of the lense using a screwdriver to move the rag around.  May also need to clean the reflectors - try not to use too much alcohol on these, just lightly dampen the cloth.  Allow to dry and re-install.  FYI, don't touch the glass part of the bulbs.

I loosen the screw and remove lens. Pour alcohol inside and swirl it around. Dump out and hit with compressed air. Crystal clear.

These methods don't disturb the reflector coating? I remember cleaning a lens in a car and plain water made the reflector coating come off!

Been doing this for years and no issues with the reflective coatings.  Just a small amount on a rag when cleaning the back.

I'd imagine that reflector was "ready" to come off. Can't say anything Harley made that is shiny holds up well, but this method most definitely will not cause damage. Swish it around dump it out and hit with compressed air. I regulate mine to 35psi or so, never tried at 150 only because it'd be difficult to hold nozzle steady inside lens at that pressure.

I uese hot water and table salt. swril it around for about 1 min and flush with hot water.  This will cut all of the film and grime from inside the light!

Some alcohol and water 50/50 pore it in the bulb hole and swish it around for a few and dump it out and lightly blow it out with compressed air (very low pressure) and let it dry.  Have cleaned my head lights with no problem.  It's claimed the the film is from the bulb?  Don't know that for sure.
