Heated seat and bars ?? for 11' RGU owners.
« on: April 13, 2015, 11:29:21 PM »

Finally got my bike out for a ride yesterday after a long cold winter.
THe seat heat was too hot on high. I'm talking, it would have probably burned me if I left it on. Tried it a few time and just couldn't take the high position.
The heated bars on the other hand, they got warm, not hot, and definitely not too hot. I would have liked to have had them a lot hotter.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Asbestos underwear and gloves with thinner palms?   ;)

Seriously, there's some luck of the draw for amount of heat put out by grips and seats, and it takes quite a while for the grip heat to penetrate my regular winter gloves--not to mention the grip heat never reaches the backs of the hand and fingers.  That's why I like heated gloves.

Ya, the handlebars don't really get hot. Buddy has a set he has to turn down.
As I said the seat gets way to hot.
Maybe I should switch the plugs around? If that's do able.

I recently test rode a '15 RGU, followed immediately by a ride on a '15 non-CVO Limited.  The RGU grips, set on 6, never got hot enough to feel, while the non-CVO got so hot I couldn't set them higher than 2.  Although these two pair of grips are different models, it's what I meant about "luck of the draw" with Harley heated equipment.

Have your grips always put out low heat, or is this a change from the normal?

I don't know what they've always done. It was the first time I've ridden it.

The grips might be nearly burnt out from use and age.  If you get new grips, wire them up to a 12 volt power supply before installing.

I  have found that both of my CVO's heated grips hit max heat on settings between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2. As I turn it up higher toward the 6 setting, grip temp actually drops. These are the latest versions.  Both sets were replaced with new ones within the past few months. My friend's non cvo grips get hotter than mine.

What's involved in changing them. Is there a plug close to the grip, or do the wires have to be fished through the bars to get to the connection location?

If we are talking about your 2011 cvo they need to be fished through the bars. More than likely it's only the left grip that's defective. The cvo heated grips are pricey,  about $250 msrp for the left one. Do you have extended warranty? Try setting it to 3 and see if it gets hotter than at 6.

I'll try different settings next time. that may be a week or so. I didn't put it all the way up the first time I doubt that setting it at 3 will make a difference but I'll try it.thanks for the advice.

FYI. Your seat also has a low setting. I couldn't take more than 10 mins on high on my '11 I had or my current '15. I use the high setting to get the seat up to temp and then put it down on low if still needed.
