Zumo 665
« on: January 05, 2010, 07:02:24 AM »

Garmin's CES lineup leaked...

Zumo 665: Have a rider in the family? The 665 is Garmin's latest motorcycle-centric nav unit, which appears to be little more than a 660 with the XM weather, radio (with A2DP out), and traffic on board. It's got a slightly newer firmware build than the current 660 that adds additional map layouts and data fields; and don't worry, 660 owners -- you'll get it in the Spring.

2010 International CES January 7 - 10.... anybody going to be in Las Vegas during this time that is going to the show??... and can get us some pics??

Garmin 665

"The zūmo 665 comes standard with our GXM™ 40 XM antenna. Simply add an optional XM subscription and receive real-time XM Radio® with 170 digital channels of commercial-free music, news, sports, talk and entertainment when you travel in the U.S. With the addition of XM NavWeather®, you can access up-to-the-minute weather data and NEXRAD radar graphics from your map screen to stay ahead of the storm. Plus, when you add on XM NavTraffic®, you can find out where the trouble spots are and route around them."

This may just replace my 478.

Procrastination has its advantages.  Wonder how soon we'll see some $600 sales on them, though?

Or maybe it'll drop the price of the 550 down to a couple hundred bucks.......and I can keep my GXM30. ;)

Cool! XM Radio too now! A REAL replacement for the 550! Anything missing that comes with the 550? At least I have an option now to be able to retain XM Radio! :2vrolijk_21:

What's expensive is the NEXRAD weather from XM at $29 per month.

If I were thinking of getting a 665 I wouldn't get to concerned about the price suggested on the Garmin site. Currently Garmin is listing the suggested retail price for the Zumo 660 at $799.00 and I found it on Bizrate.com starting at $599.00. I would think it would be possible to find the 665 a couple hundred then the suggested retail price... still high in the grand scheme of things, but less then the suggested retail. :nixweiss:

Ouch.....thats a bit more than the XM Traffic/Weather/Radio I have setup now, I think it's like $17.....don't pay much attention, it just comes outta the account like everything else.....

I'm in the market for a 660... and don't need it until riding season in CO... so when y'all drop your 660s for the 665, I'll be happy to take it off your hands for a fair price! I don't care about XM, and while nexrad would be a nice feature... not worth $29 a month to me and I figure once you're out & about on the bike, seeing pictures of the weather doesn't really matter... lol

Anyone look in to it enough to see if it'll use the same mount as the 660, so those who already have the 660 hardwired won't have to completely start over?

According to Garmin website under accessories for those two units Zumo 660 and Zumo 665 are both showing they have the same motorcycle mounts by part numbers.

I'll stick with my 660.  For $400 more, it's not worth the extra.  If I'm out on the bike, I can see what the weather looks like, and besides it's too late then, so I don't need to see a picture of what I'm running into.  I don't need XM with 8 GB of MP3's, so I'll stick with the 660 thankyewverymuch.

Already got a shirt ... and a hat.  Knock some $$$s off of that worn out 660, Tommy!

Lets see Brian......

List price 799.99 less 160.00 AMA discount = 639.99 + 28.00 freight = 767.99 less 5% CVO discount =  $729.59!
 :2vrolijk_21:

By the way, I'll even through in another Honda shirt!

What a deal!  I bet U think I'd make a good car salesman too!

Lets see Brian......
$729.59! value and based on 50 cent on the dollar rate for used stuff that would be,

$365.00

Good deal Tommy to get rid of the used stuff.
Good deal for Brian to help Tommy.
I'd call that a win-win.

That $365 must include the Chithead discount, which Brian doesn't qualify for!

I'm no math wizz, but I don't think that adds up....so to speak....

I wasn't going to mention that.   :nixweiss:

But for his buddy I think 365 is fair and reasonable.

And I'm thinking Brian would let him keep the Honda shirt also.

Not sure but Brian's not greedy so . . . . .

Doesn't look like the 665 has the marine features of the new 640. Trying to figure out if the 665 can take the Bluechart maps. Any idea Gary?

I don't think the site will do that.... I noticed that once before when trying to compare a Nuvi against a Zumo. Best I could do was have two tabs open and switch back and forth. :(

2010 International CES January 7 - 10.... anybody going to be in Las Vegas during this time that is going to the show??... and can get us some pics??
.....
For any of you 660 owners that are thinking of buying the 665 for the new features it is being rumored/leaked that everything the 665 will have will be available on the 660 (see above in red). With them both using the same cradle makes me think that a firmware upgrade may give the 660 owners all the new features..... time will tell. :nixweiss:

An even better idea Brian. At 365 I'll take it, Tommy can ship to you and I'll put him a check in the mail.
Does that work?

What's expensive is the NEXRAD weather from XM at $29 per month.

Where did you get $29?  From XM's Website....

XM NavWeather Pricing
Get discounted rates when you combine XM Radio with XM NavWeather service. For further discounts combine XM Radio, XM NavWeather, and XM NavTraffic. See below for details.

XM Radio Only $12.95 monthly
XM Radio + XM NavWeather $16.94 monthly
XM Radio + XM NavWeather + XM NavTraffic $19.95 monthly
XM NavWeather Only  $9.95 monthly

I actually use the Marine pricing. The Fisherman's package works well for my applications and offers some more relevant information. Either way, it's not the same as having just a weather page of data and not a map.

Does seem cheap...I pay $50/mo. for XM Master Mariner for my boat.  Lake Erie can be dangerous and I feel it is worth it.  worst thing that can happen on a bike is you might get wet until you find shelter.  With the marine service you can cancel temporarily during months you don't use it and there is no re-activation fee if you cancel for less than 6 months.  I just hope the 660 I just bought with my CVO Street Glide will be upgradable to the weather and XM radio features of the 665.

XM also offers seasonal cancellation on motorcycles, I have used this feature for my Ultra ( usually Dec to March ), with no reactivation fee.

Here is the response from Garmin Support when I asked this very question....

Subject:
Zumo 660 Upgrade
Message Body:
Will the Zumo 660 be upgradeable to XM Radio/NavWeather capable. I am going
to cancel my 660 order (bought with new Harley Davidson Motorcycle) and
wait for the 665 to be available through Harley Davidson unless I get
confirmation that the 660 will be able to support XM with a future
upgrade. Thanks

Dear Carl,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

At this time, the Zumo 660 is not going to be compatible with the XM
antenna. Please let us know if you have further questions.

With Best Regards,

I see the motorcycle mount & harness for the 665 & 660 are the same, part no. 010-11270-03, which can be mounted then run into the fairing and hide all other wires and hook-ups (power, mic, MP3, etc.) However, for the 665 you need an XM antenna wire, the GXM 40™, part no. 40 010-00730-00. So I assume those who buy the 665 and want XM radio in it will need to run two cables from the 665 instead of the one. If true, that's unfortunate that Garmin didn't update the main harness on the 665 for the GXM 40 antenna to plug it into. So if you want to take your Zumo off the bike when stopping, you can't just use the quick disconnect. You have to quick disconnect then pull the XM radio wire out of the Zumo? Is that how it works with the 550?

The wiring harness inside the fairing includes a mini usb connector for the traffic receiver and the GXM 40 antenna hooks up to the unit via mini usb, so hopefully the whole mess can be inside the fairing.

From Garmin's website:

Connect Quickly
Setting up the GXM 40 is fast and easy. Simply position the antenna where it has a clear view of the sky and connect it directly to the USB port on your unit. Then choose the XM subscription that best fits your needs to start receiving XM satellite services.

by "clear view of the sky" I don't think inside the fairing would be a problem.  The fiberglass or plastic....whatever it is shouldn't block the signal.  I have my XM antennas on my boat under the  deck (fiberglass) and they work fine.

I knew the harness included a usb port for the traffic receiver but I did not know it would also run the GXM 40. Now for the bad news: Garmin charges $267.84 for a replacement GXM 40 antenna. So for those who want to use a 665 on another motorcycle it won't be cheap to get the hardware to set it up.

Hooking up the sound is easy. Just plug in a 2.5 mm stereo plug into the wiring harness of the zumo and plug the other end into the aux-in on the front of your Harley radio. Then get an SD micro card for your zumo and put your MP3 music on it. I'd recommend a 90 degree plug into the radio so it doesn't stick out, or you can take the radio out and install an input from the back side. There are detailed instructions on this site how to do it if you want to. As for the phone, just sync the zumo 660 to your phone. It can take a little while for all your contacts to download so don't panic if your zumo isn't responsive immediately. Then in order to have your headset mic work for phone calls, you need to install an aftermarket product something like the BOMM or one that J&M makes. Jim B., who makes the BOMM, and is a member here with the name bissjim on this site, sells it for $80-90. He's coming out with a new release of the BOMM next week. J&M's costs $300-$400 and takes a lot of work to install with extra hardware on your handlebars.

Hooking up the sound is easy. Just plug in a 2.5 mm stereo plug

The audio output is 3.5mm or 1/8 inch. The microphone input plug is the 2.5mm.

I am still on the edge as far as springing for a 665. I already have the 550 and 660 mount on the bike and the 65 can use the same 660 mount. Decisions, decisions, decisions.... :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

I'm not in a huge hurry to get a 660, since I'm headed to Colorado next week, so I'll have a bit of time before riding season there... if you decide to make the leap, I'll give you a fair price for your 660.

I see the 660 is still retailing just under $600; wonder if the price is going to drop as folks jump to the 665.

Why didn't it work?  Can you use the same XM Subscription with 2 antennas?  I am trying to think of a way to use this in my Tahoe for the weather features when not using it on the bike.

Each antenna has a unique serial number/mac address and you buy a subscription for a particular antenna.  So, the answer is no.

Sorry, gotta rant for a minute  :soapbox:

Had just parked Avalanche in my mom's driveway, 5' off a residential street, and was in the back of the trailer with 3 people, loading my BMW, in broad daylight, and some  :sauer055:  :sauer055: :sauer055: :sauer055: :sauer055: :sauer055: had the balls to steal my 1 week old Nuvi 855 off the dash of my truck. No  :sauer055: idea how they got close enough to see it on the dash, and then approach the truck in the middle of the day, with people everywhere, and pull it mount and all off the dash, leaving the power cord dangling.

People suck...  :wall:

sorry for the  :jack:

One more thing, if your GPS has the security feature to lock it, enable that ASAP. At least then it'll be a pain in the ass to resale or use... I saw mine had that feature, but didn't get around to enabling it in the week I had it.  :wall:

So let me get this straight, the 660 can't get the weather display through XM because of the softwear; only the 665? And no upgrade on 660?

Time will tell on that. The post that has the email coming from Garmin Tech Support I'm taking with a grain of salt. :nixweiss: All depending on what day you call/email/ who gets that call/email will depend on what answer you may get. A lot of times the technical advances or possibilities of things aren't known by those centers until they are in production.... and even after they are in production it will sometimes take time for them to get the info. :(

The security feature is great. Once enabled if it ever gets stolen the GPS is worthless. If it does end up being ripped call and report it to Garmin. That way if the person who has it tries to send it back to Garmin claiming that they forgot their code Garmin will retrieve it for you.....Maybe!

It's not just an antenna, it's the XM radio itself, the GPS just controls it.  So no, you can't, unless you pay for 2 different radios.

I am assuming Garmin did tests on the zumo 665 and the GXM 40 works underneath the Harley outer fairing. When I recently spoke to Garmin on the phone about this issue, the representative actually said he'd recommend mounting the antenna on top of the gas tank. I told him if that's what's required, they aren't going to sell too many of these to Harley owners. He said it needs to be level and a clear view of the sky and did not know if it would work through the outer fairing. I'm assuming it will since the current small XM antenna on our CVOs does and I assume that's how it works with the Zumo 550 (even though that antenna doesn't get weather). He said the GXM 40 is about 3 inch diameter, so I think it will be fine on the spot the current XM antenna sits.

I have the XM30 antenna I use with my 550.  Work's okay under the fairing.  Every now and then it drops signal when heading true West.  Not enough to want to take it our from underneath the outer fairing.

Took at least 6 months last time (between when Garmin announced the 660 and when HD had the branded one available)

I am actually in kind of a unique situation with the Zumo 665 (Harley Branded).  I have already paid for one and now have to wait for it to be released.  I wrapped the price of it into the financing for my new CVO Street glide because I didn't want to have to come up with $1000 when it is released.  Now, I HAVE to wait for God knows how long...... :(

What happens if they don't offer a HD version? Just asking?  God knows how long it's going to take, and in almost every case, you can get a better deal elsewhere on the non-HD version, so I'd be tempted to ask for a refund.

Good question....I originally had a 660 ordered with the bike and told them I didn't want it anymore because I had just found out about the 665.  I asked the finance guy at the dealership if I could pay for the 665 ahead of time so I could include it in the financing on the bike.  I didn't know If I would have $1000 in cash to pay for one when they became available.  I am hoping the 660 has an upgrade path to allow the use of the XM, which I mainly want for the weather map.  In any event, I have a $1000 "Harley Davidson Accessory Credit" for lack of a better term.  If they don't end up offering the 665 in a Harley Davidson branded unit, I am sure I can find something else to spend the money on....
