Its been A long time coming but I am finally posting the "How To" on moving the aux input to the rear of the radio.

First step is to remove the radio bottom. This will access the aux input wires where they plug into the circuit board. Remove the 4 screws shown here. You also need to use a razor blade to cut the silicone along the edge of the bottom where it meets the rubber edge on the front of the radio. The CD player carriage will come out with attached to the bottom of the radio. There is a ribbon cable that is long enough to allow you to lay the bottom along side of the radio.

To remove the top of the radio you need to cut the silicone as on the bottom and remove these screws;

I used a 1/8" stereo extension cable from Radio Shack to the connector. Cut the female end of the cable to about 12" long and run it through a holed drilled in the plastic filler on the back of the radio. Run the cable to the front of the radio and then around to the bottom and out near the input connector.You can safely drill here without hitting any electronics.

The wire codes are as follows:
1 = Right Channel +
2 = Left Channel +
3 = Common Audio -
4 = Plug sense

Un-twist the wires and cut one at a time and solder the new wire to the cut ends. Heat shrink each connection individually.

Here you see the wires spliced in. Note the brown wire on pin 4 is cut and the ends safed off. This allows the radio to stop at the aux position when switching modes even though there is not anything plugged into the front jack.

Put the covers back on and silicone the screws where they were previously. Also note that the front input jack will still function. DO NOT run both inputs at the same time as you may overdrive the input to the stereo. If you do use both just have one unit turned off while using the other.

I was planning on doing this with my radio, but today I finally tried my iPod and I am not happy with the sound. Seems to have too much distortion at any volume loud enough to listen to. Kind of disappointed. Don't think I will bother taking the radio out.

That is disappointing. I was just thinking about installing my Ipod in addition to Garmin and was glad to find this thread as I would surely need more then one Aux input.

Does anyone have experience of successful Ipod installation on a bike?

I know many people that have the ipod or other mp3 players on their bikes with good results. One thing to check is the EQ setting on the ipod. It will work best if this is set to flat or off. Also be sure that there is nor bass boost of any kind turned on.

Couple of questions: 1. The description you are showing, is this on the Harmon Kardon radio? 2. What should I ask for, for the connector cord that comes out the back of the radio? 3. Are you saying to cut the brown wire so that it will stop at the AUX postion? Why is that? 4. How hard is it to get the radio out of the dash and what is required to get it out? Appreciate the help, I have a Garmin GPS hooked up and have had to tie into the front AUX port with the wire hanging around my bars. Jim, I will be anxiously awaiting you doing an HK radio, as I need to do this to mine now. the black cord was not noticable on the black inner fairing...'till I put the chrome face plate on the radio and surrounding guages...

I am assuming that the reason for this is to have say your IPOD (which I have no problems with but would be curious as to how to turn the equalizer off or to flat - I have the IPOD MINI) and a GPS running audio at the same time.

Both inputs work simultaneously so you would hear them both......

The RS cord I have uses different colors. Its best to use a volt ohm meter to see what is what. The tip of the 1/8" plug is left +, the center is right +, and the section closest to the plug is common -

I soldered my wires directly to the board & used a 1/8" panel jack (looks exactly like the one in the front). Then installed it in a hole I drilled in the back of the case. Looks like it came that way from the factory!

Thanks for the post on what was left +, right + and common -. That really helped since I went with a panel jack on mine. I still need to mount the jack and re-silicone everthing back up, so I'll take a few shot of what I did while I'm doing that in a few days here.

This is a "must do" mod for anyone running a permanent aux. input, such as the Harley MP3 player like I have. Really cleans up the look of the dash not to have a wire runnining into the front of the radio! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Question - have not hooked up my Garmin 2720 on my new '07 yet, but on my '06 when I ran the cable to the radio aux I found that every time I turned the ignition on the radio powered up with the aux input selected even though it was on a different input source when the ignition was turned off. Since I seldom want to listen to the gps this was a glorified aggravation. Just wonder if this is normal on all the radios or just the '06 and up or just the one I had. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

On your earlier question about what other uses besides MP3 or GPS, I guess those two are about it, but if you run a permanent hookup for either of those accessories, it is nice to have the wiring hidden behind the fairing. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

My CD changer will not load a CD.. I got the radio out with a 3/16" L shaped allen wrench and finally borrowed a 3/16" long allen socket for the last one. The long allen does not fit the screw heads very well. Will a long allen socket with a "ball" style end work better or can I make do with a long regular allen?

I was just talking to TCnBham about those four screws the other night on the phone. In yet another case of "WTF were they thinking?" those have got to be the four hardest SOBs to get to on the whole bike!

This was the second time I've had my radio out and it was no easier this time around. I use an allen wrench out of my nut driver set with the box end of a 1/4" wrench slipped over the end.

Mine won't take a CD, no sounds or attempts to do so. I have 2 months left on my warranty. I took the radio out today and will call a couple of dealers and see if they will send in for repair/replacement for me. They may not want to since I took it out. Radio Sound makes the radio (Louisville, Ky) and from their website will fix it for $135.00 .. Will also call them tomorrow and see what they say on turn around time.

Brian 103-Thanks for the response on your removal tools. Hard enough taking out, probably harder putting back in.

Even though I don't have an input at this time, I probably will do HD-dudes rear input before reinstalling. Every time I think I won't have to take the fairing off for a while, something else happens.

Snap-on has a 3/8" drive long 3/16" ball end hex for $21.00.. Found a 3/16" long "L" shaped ballend for $1.70 at NAPA (part# SER59316)..

Thanks TC for the response that the "L" shaped ball allen would work and that's what I bought. For any repair I have done on this bike, I normally spend more time looking for dropped fasteners than doing the project. I also have bought more specialty wrenches like others have as well. Now all I need is a radio to put back in. Radio Sound was closed today and might be all week.

Terry, it's been long enough since my radio was R&R that I really don't remember how much of an angle there was to accessibility of those screws. Really don't remember them being such a major bother though. I've got some long allen wrenches with the universal angled head so that must've helped. But don't remember fighting it that bad. Hopefully won't have to revisit the experience though. Satisfied with it right where it is!

The part# of the grommet is 76131-98 and the allen screw is part# 2941..
I can't believe none of our local dealers stock the grommet as I know we aren't the first ones to crossthread. They did have the screws in stock so their tech's most drop them too.

When I was doing the radio input mod, I kept looking at your solder job, kept looking at my plug, and said nice job [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif].. I couldn't do it. Even asked Radio Sound to do it but they said "we don't modify the radios in any way".

Thanks for the part number. I think the screws are pretty standard issue, so they're probably used elsewhere, too. Still can't believe I cross-threaded that one of mine, though, since I threaded it most of the way in by hand. Seemed to go just fine. Guess I'll have to get one of those t-handled jobbies that hd-dude was telling us about and then try to take it out and see what's up sometime. 'Til then, I guess three will hold it fine.

On the solder job and using the connector, I figured that would maybe be the best since (DAYUM!!!) those wires are small in there. I was too skeered that after I cut the wire I'd never be able to get it stripped, spliced and soldered back up again. I think there has been 3 or 4 ways everyone has done this now and, luckily, the radio doesn't seem to care!

Have bought 3 1/8" stereo jacks and all of them have 2 wires and one stranded ground that wraps around the other 2 wires. Is this how all the wires are or is there a different wire out there.

1 Will there be any problem using this wire and solder a ground wire to the stranded one?

Not all are like that but they will work fine with the overall ground (shield). Use the overall as your ground connection and you'll have to use a volt ohm meter to determine the left and right color codes of the jacks and cables. The tip is left, the center section is right and the portion closest to the plug is the ground.

Yes the CD player still works and the front jack works as well as the added one. Just don't use both inputs at the same time.

The MP3 player arrived at Preston HD today. The service manager says there is a jack plug on the end of the lead. He's ripping the radio out so that one of my techmen at work can parallel off another jack socket in the rear of the stereo casing.

Did someone say that the storage card comes with a few tracks on it for easy testing?

Card should be blank (or at least mine was).

I did, with the 575's

You'll need to drill a hole in the bars for the wire though..

Has any one added a aux input to an 07? From what I can tell the mods where for an 06. Was there any change to the inside of the 07 radios?

Actually, this thread (the one you're in right now) details the mod for the '04 & '05 Radio Sound manufacuterd radios.

This thread: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=10044.0 shows how to do the '06 and up Harmon Kardon radios. I think only one guy here ("hd-dude") has done this mod on the HK radio. After you read that thread I think you see why . . . . the HK radio is somewhat trickier to work on.

hd-dude, I wanted to drop you a line an thank you very miuch for your valuable information.

Today I took my setup a step further and modified the audio AUX input on the HD radio per your instructions.

I originally had a Delphi FM modulator and I removed it and added an AUX input to the back of the HD radio.
I did this for a bunch of reasons better sound quality, no components to fail, interference on FM stations, no wiring etc.

Without your instructions I would not have even thought about doing this. It took less than 20 minutes. Boy am I glad I did it!
It sounds GREAT!

well i got the aux jack on my 04 radio all remoted to the back today... did it just the way Jim explaned and it went like a dream,,, so easy and it works great. Thanks Jim for the great help, and yes i do love looking down and not seeing that goofy cable feeding into the radio from my Ipod Nano. The Riders Claw works great and Ken has revised those also to make them more user friendly too. Thanks again. Those instructions were fantastic..

The right side speaker will not play with my ipod. radio will play as well as the cd (which skips all the time) tryed different cords. I think it is in my jack. can i fix this. loose wire! broke wire! any alturnatives? i love my ipod..................need help...........

Aux Jack probably just has a loose solder connection, Moving it to the back is a good option, but if you just want to fix it...not that hard. CD skipping is a bit more involves because there are a number of possibilities, but it is repairable. What year is the bike and has the radio ever been replaced?
