Some of you know I just got a '12 RAM 3500 6.7L Laramie Dually.  I've made a couple changes now.  I just this past weekend replaced the lower driver's seat cushion foam and perforated lower cover.  I also replaced the passenger's cover as well.  WOW was it dirty under the seat covers.  I say covers, but I'm actually saying OEM leather seat cover.

The PO was a contractor that drove a LOT and worked at many grain elevators with the huge silos.  Around them is this grain dust very similar to talcum powder.  It's throughout the truck interior and even under the seat covers in the vented seat distribution webbing.  At least now the cooled seats are working like they should, but tons of hot day work to get it done.

So onto my question.

What oil are you guys using on your diesel trucks?  I'm supposed to use full synthetic and plan on doing so.  Also this thing holds around 14qts of oil... WOW!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be a big help.

You are going to get a bunch of answers on this....I personally have had good luck with Rotella---T6 is full synthetic, T5 is a blend, T4 is regular dino. Was using dino in my '05 F250, but went full synthetic in the '18 RAM. Plenty of people will say dino is good enough since so many of the truckers use it and they do most of the driving.

It looks unanimous Rotella T6 it will be.

We have a farm supply store locally, Rural King.  They have it for $5/qt in 2.5 gal bottle.  I see Amazon has it for around $4.60/qt in the 3 gal as mjb said.

Do you use MOPAR filters or some other brand?

I'm a bit late in this Dan but I used Rotella in my '98 Dodge.  Great stuff.  However, and this doesn't matter to you since you have the Cummins, but Ford in their Powerstroke had some issues with Rotella and other oils foaming on them since it operates at such a high pressure.  I found that out on my 2009 6.4 when changing the oil the first time.  Service manager (good friend...still is) showed me the service bulletin where Ford said no to using anything but Motorcraft to "guarantee" no foaming.

Anyway, Rotella is good stuff.  Yes on the Mopar filters, by the way, at least on mine.

I use the Mopar filters, but I found the RAM forum is pretty split on Mopar or Fleetguard filters.

Without a doubt, Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic oil. This is what I use in my E350 7.3 Diesel Super Duty Van. Also, it pretty cheap at Wallyworld (Walmart) too.

Lastly, don't be surprised right after you do the oil change and check the dip stick. It will look like you never changed your oil.

Both the amount of Qts of oil and the price of a new filter makes for an expensive oil change. No $19.95 oil changes for diesel trucks.

I had a DMax from 06-10 and going on 9 years now with my Ford 6.7
120k total of which about 60k is towing.
17-19K pound toy hauler up until May 2018 then a 22k+ DRV.

If I had to guess I would say 80% or more is on T-6

I usually buy when I see the price is good or once a year when Shell offers the rebates.
Amazon or Walmart.
Rebates vary from $5 a gallon to $20 for 2.5 bottles.
On occasion when needed and T-6 was too high I used T-4 or T-5, and sometimes mixed.

BTW, if you have a Ford 2011-2016 6.7 you should be carrying a turbo hose. The throttle body side is plastic and gets brittle. One of three parts I carry and I used it this past May.
They fail, dramatically and if you have the part it is a 5 minute change once you get the tools out.
