Flush Mount Gas Cap Trim Ring Replacement
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:02:42 AM »

Hi,

So my newest CVO has a flawed trim ring on the gas cap side of the tank.  It looks like I can replace the trim ring with part#    63028-06.  Has anyone done this?  How did you get the trim ring off without damaging the paint?

Thanks!

It's held on with two sided tape.  You'll cut it off with fishing line or dental floss or other such non-marring device.

Don't worry how to get it off. Worry how to leave it on. It came of my tank two times, the glue is not fuel resistant. Once I could catch the trim ring during a drive on a highway.

Awsome...thanks!   :2vrolijk_21:  Dental floss.  I can tell now that it isn't on by much...even though it is factiry original.  It is a bit disheartening though that the chrome is flaking off like a cheap platic model.  I don't think 4 years should rot Harley chrome.    :nixweiss:

Look the old one over very closely.  I vaguely remember some sort of alignment dot or arrow on the inside face or lip.  If it's there and orientation actually matters you'll want to lay the new one down with the dot facing the dame direction.

I think Harley subcontracts parts to China. My rearview mirror chrome is pitting. I will have to replace them. I suspect Harley's may be assembled in USA, not made in USA...

Cost cutting is very sad on a premium product, made in china assembled in US.

Turned out I only had to pull it up using finger nails and it came right off.  The new one went down easily after removing some old gummy glue from the first ring.  Its a simple replacement...although 13 bucks for a chromed piece of plastic....sheeeesh.

Yeah, but it's H-D chrome plastic made in china, so it's special!  ::)

I wonder if any MoCo board members are on this site? We should send them a letter. CVO's need American parts made with quality!

This method worked perfect me too. I simply pulled gently on the plastic trim ring after a long ride on a hot day and most of the glue came off. I used a little WD40 to remove the glue remaining then installed the new $13 plastic trim ring no problem. Let’s see if it stays on like it supposed to.

About time for me to replace my trim ring also. The plastic chrome has flaked off from where the fuel nozzle touches from time to time.
Wish there was a better alternative that had the same clean look.

6 years have passed and the ring I put on still looks brand new and has not given me a single issue.  I am very careful when adding fuel, but still, 6 years and it looks new is fine with me!

 :beatdeadhorse:

Picked up 3 (metal) rings few years ago in 2 ebay sales. Repl one easy to do, not following MoCo's instructions which
ask you to cut masking tape carefully with razor on tank. BS just align tape on two sides "L" shape to center.  Ring
(metal) is concave & will find its own seat by turning to fit BEFORE REMOVING TAPE.

Parts catalog says ( 63028-06 TRIM RING )

Never had problem after install providing you clean surface.

Careful filling still looks like new 3 ? years past.

Saw these plastic parts years ago, your call, metal still out there !.......J

I realize this thread is from 2012, BUT in case anyone looks it over... I replaced 2 of these rings and they stayed on just fine, for up to a week and a half at a time.  A buddy suggested getting Permatex gasket sealer which comes in blue (that matches my bike) and forget the crappy double sided tape that is NOT gas resistant.  That was two years ago and it is still going strong.
