Title: Oil Migration?
Post by: Joel on August 01, 2022, 11:17:50 PM
I do all the service on my bike, 2015 CVO Limited. Do this service at 5,000 miles.
Closing in on 20,000 miles, not used much the last couple years.
I didn't drain engine and transmission separately but did the primary oil into a gallon oil jug with the face cut open so it fit under the drain plug.
While it was draining I looked up the fill capacity of 38 ounces.
I decided to pour the old oil into an empty qt bottle just to check what amount came out.  Well I filled 2 qt bottles.
Do these 2015   110's have an oil migration issue?
When I refilled it,  the bike was on the jack level,  38 ounces was below the opening on the cover, and I doubt you can get 64 ounces in without leaning the bike far to the right.
Any thoughts on this?

Yours is the first i've heard of it.  I put 40k miles on my 2012 110 and never used a drop or had any migration.

The 2015 touring service manual specifies the primary takes 38 fluid ounces when doing an oil change. When the primary case is removed to do maintenance then the primary takes 45 fluid ounces. 2 quarts would be 64 ounces. Can't imagine how that much could even get into the primary. Would help to know if your oil level was correct.

I had checked to engine oil earlier this spring when I brought the bike out of the storage room here at my shop, it was full, didn't check the transmission at the time, but when I drained the transmission it was clear and drained for awhile.
I only removed the inspection cover for the primary service. And the primary oil was dark but not like engine oil.
I'll monitor the fluids and maybe drain the primary after the Bend Oregon trip to see if there is more than the 38 oz I put back in.
